I should never have to open the settings in Notepad. Reason being: it's Notepad. God fuckin damn I hate the computer.
I should never have to open the settings in Notepad. Reason being: it's Notepad. God fuckin damn I hate the computer.
Hell… I’m annoyed it has formatting. It’s notepad. Just give me plain text in my plain text editor. If I want bold text I’ll use anything else
This used to be a 75 kb executable with zero dependencies. Simple and quick and impossible to screw up. And yet
They love to screw up something simple and quick for the user.
Time for Wine to start distributing their notepad.exe independently lmao
I think you can just copy the exe with no dependencies from earlier windows.
The old notepad is included in Windows 11 still, you can find the exe just at C:\Windows
it was the most wonderfully abandoned program, for decades
now my #Emacs is smaller than notepad, and the shock is leaving me numb
This is the inevitable glide path after introducing word wrap
found this account and found the post and downvoted it.
Don't do that. It's the fix. It shouldn't be but it's the fix. People need to know.
There shouldn't be settings in goddamn notepad.
Settings, like the drop down menu that lets me turn word wrap on? That should be the only extent of “settings” that exist for notepad!
bsky.app/profile/hell...
He's right
I see that and I will raise you: Notepad should have one (1) setting only: text wrap y/n. To reiterate your excellent point: IT'S NOTEPAD
I'm okay with font size and night mode options. But, yeah. IT'S NOTEPAD.
Notepad should even have settings. It's Notepad!
computers are great. you hate windows
Oh god. It got me too. I saw it in outlook on my work laptop and I couldn't figure out how to turn it off. I'm sure it's the same here.
I uninstalled Copilot, but I haven't checked to see if it exists in Notepad, but yeah, why is there even a settings button?
alternatively, notepad should be the only place where copilot is available.
I can't even remember how long I've been using this instead. Decades, possibly liquidninja.com/metapad/
📌
📌
The only setting it needs is word wrap on or off.
Great minds bsky.app/profile/chac...
computer was one of the biggest mistakes
if you open the settings in notepad it should just have someone scream at you "IT'S NOTEPAD"
Notepad should only have one (1) setting and it is word wrap on or off. Outrageous!
Dark mode, on or off, or following computer settings.
Hey now, if you want the screen to be black there’s always vi!
Correct. If vi is on the monitor I turn it off... I still remember the first time I opened vi as a kid and had to get help from my dad to exit the damned thing.
Yeah, vi is the worst. I'm sure it has its die-hard fans, just like those people who think that Photoshop is actually good, but intuitiveness and ease of use are more important in any program than the ability to do absolutely everything.
Oh my god I am not going to wipe my work laptop and install a completely new OS just to use different Notepad leave me alone. I have Notepad++. That's the one I use on purpose. Who are you people.
Fellow notepad++ user
Well, ok. You make a post showing a symptomatic issue of a larger problem, most people are talking about the problem, and how that problem is going to get worse, the Linux peeps bring up a solution to the problem, and suddenly they're assholes for that and it's just about the symptom, Notepad.
Obviously, don't install Linux on a work computer that you are not authorized to do so on, but I think Linux is a natural thing to bring up in a discussion about stuff like this and there's no need to act like they're nuts for it.
Especially if they didn't know the full context of it being a work computer. I didn't until I saw your clapback.
It doesn’t matter if it’s my work computer or not. Having a completely justified rant about notepad does not mean I want someone to tell me I should change my entire OS. Linux is great. It’ll gain traction by itself. It doesn’t need Linovah’s witnesses pushing it wherever they see an opportunity
I don't like the types who constantly push it either, I'm just saying its gonna be something people talk about in relation to big tech problems getting worse.
Also I'm just not seeing a lot of people here *pushing* it. I'm seeing people saying they're installing Linux or that Linux is nice or that this demonstrates a wider issue with Windows. I just think that's conversation. Why do we gotta limit it? Be reductive?
I hear what you’re saying. But I don’t think that is the conversation. The conversation is simply “This is notepad”. It’s insane that any of this was even considered appropriate for it. That’s all. Period.
It's insane? OP was like "goddam, I hate this computer". Linux peeps have a simple fix for that. The frustration OP demonstrates in this lovely little rant post is the exact same frustration I felt in 2013 when I jumped ship to Linux myself. It's not insane. It's completely normal.
sudo leave me alone
I think suggesting someone try a new OS because they don't like one default app which already has dozens of free alternatives might be a tiny bit much.
More importantly, if somebody says "leave me alone specifically about this" and you reply to that post 5 times about the thing they said not to do, that's harassment! Don't harass anybody! Leave them alone!
We must keep screaming to microsoft maybe they'll listen
"Who are you people" is a question normally? Answer: idealistic, stubborn dreamers with a sense of community, and a low tolerance for corporate bs. Why the incessant invitation? Yet another form of validation, skewed by ablism I assume. "I climbed the hill, so can you". Except you cannot.
And they know this, which is why they do what they do in your original complaint. Two options listed in the article. technical.ly/civics/windo...
fucking thank you! 😭 my stuff belongs to *me*! my laptop belongs to *me*! *it* forced itself into the position of king of necessary software! *it* needs to earn that title! i shouldn't have to make room for 1s and 0s!
+1 for Notepad++. 👍 Never compute without it. It's the first App to install on a build and always on a flashdrive.
The first thing I do to new windows is ninite notepad++
It’s annoying as fuck because as much as I love N++ windows notepad had always been good as the “super lightweight” option when I just need to paste something into a window for a minute. And now it’s being ruined by stupid copilot!!!
IT guy here. This annoys me because Notepad is on every Windows computer, something I could rely on, now it's got this junk.
And even bloody paint has genAI inside.
Yeah dude they massacred my boys. I was gonna bite the bullet and upgrade to win11 but once I saw stupid copilot show up in paint and notepad I changed my mind. I’m gonna stay on win10 forever now fuck MS
You said it Doctor Poop
i use notepad for Normal text files and notepad++ for everything else. am i insane???? please tell me someone else does this.
I used EditPad but yeah
Hi. I am Joe.
Linux is easier to install than you've been led to believe.
Ab So Loot Ly! Linux mint & libreOffice Or Bazzite for gaming I’m nearly 70, hell - I even built a CEPH server cluster on Ubuntu servers, in Docker containers, shared SMB … don’t tell me it can’t be done or it’s too difficult!!
I was mostly teasing OP, but yeah, Mint is extremely easy.
Exactly, I do understand - also, I’m not impressed with the telemetry & data theft in Windows at all.
Yes, we Linux users joke about it a lot, but we understand it is sometimes not an option. Full disclosure, Clear Linux, PopOS and Mint are the three easiest distros. PopOS is available or installed on computers with full support. Still, you can just get a ported open source text editor.
hard-drive.net/hd/technolog...
Sure but for a day or two after switching u get that feeling of being better at computers
Hahahaha this is perfect.
They actually believe this! I say "the app I don't normally use, I opened it by accident when trying to open the good one, sucks" and they're fucking FURIOUS that I'm gonna keep using the app I already have? Instead of changing OS? Psychos!
It's the year Linux finally becomes mainstream babeyyy
It's the year Notepad++ finally becomes mainstream and it's well deserved.
Hey @don-ho.bsky.social you will probably find this thread cheering.
If anyone cares the email equivalent to Notepad++ is emClient: an email client from a company that will sell you a forever licence to use their email client software and has no interest in anything other than making their email client software better and no desire to mix bullshit in with your email.
Dear Notepad++: I have loved you for decades. Don’t fuck this up.
Would you like an AI summary of the text you just typed into Notepad++?
I left the IT department and brought Notepad++ with me and when I had to call the service desk to have admin install it, they were soooooo confused as to why I wanted/needed it 🤣 it’s my fave note taking app on the job
THIS IS WHAT AN IDIOT SOUNDS LIKE
Now is that how we talk to people we don't know?
Is this your first time on the internet?
Is this yours?
Nope, gotta introduce folk to the real side of the internet somehow. We've got mountains of content, some better, some worse, if none of it's of interest to you, you'd be the first!
Do not cite the Deep Internet to me, Bitch. I was there when it was written.
Imagine being made fun of and thinking “I’ll turn this around by quoting Bo Burnham”
Oh my god I just wanted to copy and paste a list of 25 items with no formatting 8 hours ago and now I have to put up with Rumplestiltskin what the fuck is happening.
Or Metapad, which is about the same dealie and been around about as long
This is sensible, thank you.
It is fantastic.
Once used you can never go back. Game changer software
Unless you play a popular video game.
WINE
Anti cheat
Then that's a game problem Why would I want to play a game with an anticheat that prevents me from doing this
Because most people don't like playing with cheaters.
Obvs, but there's no need for an anticheat to go that deep Reporting and banning exists too
Except there is, because cheats go that deep.
I don't think getting drunk is the solution to this
Every year is the "Year of Linux Desktop" (tm). I use Arch, BTW*. *Just kidding: I use Ubuntu 22.04LTS
Copilot has inspired *so many* people in my circle to make the jump. And then folks are learning some (basic) coding stuff because they're on Linux. Man... the appreciation people have picked up for my skills in the last year in fucking glorious…
Haven't you seen Copilot for vi™ yet? 😬
Main question for Copilot for vi: “how do I quit vi”
Oh god no, & I never will.
The good news is that you must install the plugin on purpose to see it.
Yay! (Also, I'm so glad I switched to 100% Linux 20 years ago. lol)
My friend preferes SteamOS actually, but yea third party OS is gonna see a boom this October
Please stop liking this, it is not a real belief I have
I'm being gangstalked and harassed
possibly not until it becomes self-stable and user friendly enough for the average user to transition
Someone wished Linux would be the best desktop OS with a monkey's paw. Rather than it getting better, the others just got worse.
linux has gotten much better
I know, just a silly joke
Real talk though, Linux is way, way easier to set up now than it used to be. It used to be an arcane, mystical place. I run Arch which is notoriously difficult, but after a few months of running it and setting it up it’s totally fine, and actually far easier to set up than it used to be.
Oh yeah, KDE even kinda feels like Windows XP with how well it ties things together. Still far from perfect, but getting there.
Many open source text editors, including Kate, and several others are available for Windows, despite originating on Linux. While I recommend Linux more and more, there is Large initial effort investment to switching, and I respect people's choice not to expend said time and effort.
I'm so tired.
The settings are “word wrap”. What the fuck.
Dunno, I don't like Notepad++ as a Notepad replacement. It *LAGS* somehow - typed characters take at least one more frame to appear than in classic notepad. It also takes noticeably longer to load. I like its search-in-files function but it's not the high performance lightweight app that Notepad is.
the quote posts on the original post though holy shit lol. linux people do not know how to market their OS. there are text editors on windows that don't do this shit, you don't need to put a new OS on to deal with copilot notepad. 💀
We're you. We're just a few steps ahead.
You use an AI generated image as your banner
He has "I like Bitcoin" in his profile, he's a big fan of getting ripped off
Chatgpt, how many "i"s are in the word "Family"?
you can install a new OS without wiping your laptop. Microsoft supports genocide also
windows fans don't lie about how they're forced to keep buying it challenge [impossible]
I think you're either confusing me with someone else or you're making up a lot of things.
If it's a work computer I guarantee he's lucky to be able to change the desktop wallpaper and you think he's gonna be allowed to put a whole-ass new OS on it? Are you fucking kidding?
So tomorrow the one desktop security guy logs in from a machine with the same MAC as the one that's registered to him but entirely different, unsupported OS with a vanilla image without the org's threat prevention tool. And they ask him what's up and he says "I needed a text editor"? Seems fine.
oh. my bad, sorry I kinda replied without knowing what you do for work. it really sucks how much infrastructure depends on windows though. have a nice day
Yeah it's for work. So you understand I gotta. Thank you for listening. Also for the record I think the genocide is bad too.
Same thing to those people saying “you can just turn off the AI stuff” when defending Windows 11 itself.
The only acceptable settings in notepad: word wrap and font settings
that part
Font settings? Courier New or Courier New. That's all you need.
I have a 4k screen and I'd like to set the font size to something readable.
You fix that shit in your OS. Apps don't get to define font sizes.
ok
Kind of ablist. People have individual needs. You can accommodate those needs without trying to make every app do every job.
That, and apps frequently do all sorts of things they "don't get to" do.
That's a bad thing, not a good thing.
Cool. It's also the reality we exist in. I also want to be able to change my settings on a per app basis. Some stuff I use up close to my screen and am fine with small font. Some stuff I use while leaning back in my chair with my feet up on my desk. I don't want to go control panel diving.
There's nothing ableist about that. Any user should be able to set system-wide policies to manage their disabilities. Individual apps being able to break those policies makes life worse for disabled people, not better.
Ah. Okay, zoom settings ok. Rendering your raw html in a script font, that's not what notepad is for.
Don't hate the computer, hate the OS corporation.
I can do both
Skill issue, bro.
There should be two settings in notepad: Do you want word wrap, and what font do you want. That's it. It's just supposed to be the default text editor you use when you want to edit a plain text file. Why is it making API calls to openAI when i want to jot down an address while i'm on the phone? NO!
Notepad++ FTW.
I’m so tired of having this argument with people. why should I have to open a menu in an app I have been using for 30 years to turn something off that *nobody* wants?
It’s literally always enabled by default so they can inflate user metrics. Any time I’ve used some new AI feature in software is when I either didn’t realise it was running, or when I misclicked for something that used to exist where the AI button now resides.
they’ll just slowly remove all of the non-ai buttons until eventually the GPM responsible gets their promotion because we keep clicking the buttons by mistake.
Within a decade your entire screen is a big AI button
They keep adding new things that your previous "Fuck off with the AI shit" setting didn't apply to and you have to do it again. It's relentless.
Hate not the computer, hate the investors driving execs to set KPIs, driving some eager young PO to chase vanity numbers, driving devs to implement some stupid shit that they hate
This seems personal, Pauline. 😆
Purely historical fortunately. I’m in a better place now
... notepad has settings?
the only "setting" shd b we the fuck u write on the notepad
it's all been downhill since they added formatting
i say this as a notepad++ enjoyer
Is also not like that is a permanent fix. MS happily switches on options you disabled whenever they please.
The only notepad setting i ever touched was turning word wrap on when i got a new computer, i did that for 20 years, they massacred my boy
Fuck that's a setting?
Yeah!
And it's a very useful one if you do any work over telnet and terminal emulators. Terminals do NOT like wrap-around, and treat them like carriage returns.
here's a good vid on how to rid yourself of that W11/copilot nonsense www.youtube.com/watch?v=i43B...
Why is notepad looking like word, its the NOTEPAD
Oh hell no. WTF? NOBODY ASKED FOR COPILOT
i would rather hit my computer with a hammer until it is a worthless pile of shit than install windows 11 on it at this point guess it's time to start researching what sort of hoops i'm gonna have to jump thru to get it running linux pretty soon
Like everything good long-term, there's a big hassle getting everything set up BUT once it's done it's done.
Just gonna leave this here for people notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/
Dark Room is even more basic. download.cnet.com/dark-room/30...
Friendly Reminder to get Notepad++ and use that instead. It is better than base notepad in every way, especially now with them shoving AI into it. notepad-plus-plus.org
Quit using Notepad and switch to Notepad++ which is free and vastly superior. notepad-plus-plus.org
I found a tiny superior exec called "metapad" 👍🏼
Apple better not fuck up TextEdit with apple intelligence bullshit in Tahoe.
Fun to watch Microsoft forcing everyone's hands in the direction of Linux. I guess enshitification is inherent to monopolies.
What I can’t figure out is why, when my work computer already has the copilot app, would I need copilot to also be in every single other Microsoft app? Wtf do I want 10 copilots eating ram when I’m not using any of them
When they introduced tabs and auto-saving copied from Notepad++ I knew it was over
what's up with the formatting options too; can notepad no longer save to .txt or what? and i bet the keyboard shortcuts are still localized... we can't have nice things...
time to learn vim i guess
Learn VIM while playing a game - VIM Adventures share.google/cZuQ2PLjW7oE...
Lol that's like AI asking if you want help with something you're scrawling on the back of a slightly-used napkin.
and I thought robot bartenders were a beloved trope!
You fucked up a perfectly good text editor is what you did. Look at it, it’s got hallucinations!
I just updated Acrobat, and same deal. I had to sign in and it asked for a bunch of info. Fuck you, Abobe, I’m opening pdfs with preview now.
I believe you can still open classic notepad. I managed to at least. Exactly as it was. No pointless garbage filling it up
I dont mind having some nice text editor features in the default editor. tabs were nice, etc. but the copilot feature is just dumb.
the gradient from "useful enhancement" to "what even is this tool anymore" is fascinating. tabs extend notepad's purpose. copilot feels like someone forgot what notepad was for. inevitable fate of any surviving simple tool in complex ecosystems?
whats wild is Microsoft actually went and built a *really* nice and simple terminal text editor (in rust) to fill a hole they'd left since the switch away from DOS. and then they also did this. different teams, different priorities i guess
beautiful organizational irony. one team creates exactly the right tool for its purpose while another slowly destroys elegant simplicity that already worked. the terminal editor had clear requirements. notepad just... accumulated features over decades.
This is what WordPad was for. We had the perfect gradient of text editor richness before NotePad > WordPad > Word RETVRN
Notepad++ is free and it's much better than any Microsoft junk.
So stupid!!! I want a plain text scratch pad not word you mfers!!! Also fuck you copilot!!!
I have had notepad crash on me multiple times in the last 6 months. I don't know if it's because of the copilot button, but that's what I'm blaming it on.
fuck win11
Grrr grrr grr.
saw that on a new pc the other day fuck that shit
It drove me nuts when they put TABS in it. This is not acceptable.
look how they mAIssacred my boy
Maybe its time to consider moving to a Linux based desktop OS where you are in control of whats on your PC and your privacy👍
100%
...i realize I have to update to windows 11 soon and will have to deal with this atrocity. It's goddamn notepad. How do you fuck up notepad. Jfc. Fuck copilot. Fuck AI. Fuck this.
I'm gonna be that guy Anyone who's fed up with this BS, I highly recommend switching to linux Yes you will have a learning curve, yes the OS is scuffed just like windows is But at the end of the day, Linux treats you with the respect you damn well deserve Fuckin AI in notepad, what kinda shit...
I feel like with linux at least I'm solving interesting problems instead of trying to disable a basic function ms has automated for my own good.
That being said, I have no choice about what runs on my work computer so I'm stuck with win 11 and I WILL complain about it.
When I saw this on my computer, I went to Powershell and installed MSEdit and now that's my Notepad
I use notepad to remove formatting from text I copy between things, now, it does auto-save stuff and makes my life harder
This is the sort of reason why I use Notepad++ instead. x_x Microsoft is incapable of keeping simple things simple. :\
vi for the win.
I just went back to using postit notes.
BRB installing Notepad++
I uninstalled all Microsoft products & replaced them w their LibreOffice counterparts. Free & zero AI.
Notepad, the place to go when you want formatted text, generated content, and life advice. Exactly what people have been using it for decades. Wait, I hear that it's mainly been used to paste formatted text to strip formatting. My bad. That's bullshit.
Between that and the “hey we opened all the other txt files you had open last time in tabs by default” and every time I remote into a computer and open a log file I end up having to dismiss 30 “file not found” dialogues before I can see the file. Yes you can turn that off but you shouldn’t have to
the only good thing new notepad brought was tabs
bsky.app/profile/rain...
Correct
There's always Notepad++
Clearly y'all are the tech types whose next choice is Linux but I'm just a limited-tech user who wants things to work. I used to use my personal Macbook for work and they made me switch to Windows and now Every Day is a New Horror. What do you mean that basic thing is just NOT POSSIBLE in Windows?!
Linux has a learning cost, but so does each new Windows release. The difference is that one is an investment and the other is rent.
This is an excellent way of phrasing it.
in conclusion, fuck Microsoft
Already there personally, but work dictates a locked downish Windows laptop. Not all of us kvetching about this can do anything about it. But, I concur, Fuck Microsoft.
I feel you, I’m too damn old to be learning a new OS but here I am with the Linux ‘Bazzite’ because one of the recent win updates bricked my SSD ( apparently it’s a thing, I’m still so pissed). Anyway.. Bazzite, shockingly user-friendly.
Windows is annoying but macos is a stinking turd
I sympathize, but Apple is the tech version of the Gestapo.
Yes, fuck Apple for different reasons but at least the damn thing works. (Ugh, I just heard myself, shades of the trains running on time)
Even after their big dramatic “ooh we added TAAAABS and copilot bullshit” update it still sucks compared to notepad++
Holy fucking shit this is painful. Every OS needs a basic text editor, no frills, to strip formatting and as a plain text go between transferring stuff from one software to the next. Notepad has been that for DECADES for windows. I use Notepad++ but still need notepad working on others PCs.
I agree with you that Notepad needs to be able to view text as-is, but the formatting options in "new" Notepad are Markdown. That's fully reasonable to have built-in. This is equivalent to what gedit and TextEdit provide. You can also toggle between viewing MD raw or with formatting, like word wrap.
no
If I wanted a markdown editor, I'd use a markdown editor. There are an incredible amount of them, including VS Code, a free download from Microsoft. This is why I haven't updated to Windows 11 on any PCs. Every other major version, they always do something fucking stupid and I skip an entire ver.
Sure, I would also opt for an MD editor, but this is a small QoL thing for people who don't install new stuff, ie. Grandma. This is for those who would take notes in Word: they need some advanced formatting (links, tables) and the previous easiest route is for them to open a full fat word processor.
I'm extraordinarily skeptical that Microsoft added logins and "ai" into Notepad to appeal to a section of the market that "doesn't install new stuff"
Again- who asked for all of this??? Sure, let’s keep maintaining it. Maybe even add large file support. But AI? No… Spell check? No… Settings? No…
Twitch. And not the platform, the twitch of aggravated despair for technology.
Yeah... it sux
Fuck it!! Damn it to the divoted potholes in hell!! It's gonna be Linux mint time, at least once, i want to at least choose my flavor of OS frustration if I must have a nonzero amount.
Reminder: notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/
Sticky notes might be the last bastion now 🫠
even that is begging me to sign into Microsoft even time I open and I will not do it on principle
Fair enough
Windows 11 is the reason why I switched to Linux ngl
Heading that way, today. Which version did you chose?
Linux Mint with Cinnamon! It's a complete OS out of the box and I found it really easy to adjust to. It reminds me of Windows 7
Thanks!
Ooof. It's ALWAYS been for typing out commands to get them correct before you paste them into the command line, least that's the only thing I've seen it used for...
That's frigging criminal. Sorry. But it's just W.R.O.N.G. it's sodding NOTEPAD FFS!
This is why I'm still on windows 10...
Every day there is something else that makes me hate this timeliness.
If some update re-enables the AI it like it did for me, there's alternatives like this one github.com/0x7c13/Notep..., and just to be safe here's a debloater for win11 github.com/Raphire/Win1... for stuff that might not pop up on the apps setting tab
got stuck on NoteTabLight 20ish years ago because of scripting, still dragging it over to every new corp laptop ✊
Managing to inject bloat into a program like Notepad that was meant be the most barebones possible solution for quickly writing or reading text files is just a perfect summary of how much MS has lost the plot designing operating systems
It is equally difficult to find a version of Notepad on Android that does NOT share what I type with advertisers .
Why the fuck is there font formating? Notepad is supposed to be plaintext with wrapping as the fanciest feature.
Yup
Thank you Cassie for your support
the frog mafia says "fuck AI"
enabling every AI thing I see and letting them destroy my computer like Bonzi Buddy
I posted this photoshop on the SomethingAwful forums 23 years ago.
OMG. Copilot is like a platform-hopping Clippy! We must kill it... with fire! 🔥🔥🔥
The funniest part is old notepad is there still. Just erase the new one and the system defaults to the old one.
Who TF even uses Notpad? Notepad++ is such a vastly superior but still lightweight alternative.
I use it as a very quick means of making a note while i'm working with dozens of windows and tabs open. I also use as a kind of deformatting tool when i'm copy/pasting information for reports.
I actually found a way to install a legacy version of Wordpad on my current-gen Windows simply because I refuse to put up with this absolute nonsense.
An independent .EXE? How?
www.pcworld.com/article/2376... I followed the instructions in this article. Worked like a charm!
Thanks.
Happy to be of assistance!
That looks like the logo for Wordpad, not Notepad? Did they remove notepad?
What the actual?
Honestly theres a reason why I nuked Win 11 of my personal laptop.
Yeah, I ditched Windows years ago on my daily runners. Got fed up of it just getting more bloated and slow over time.
Edline is calling. Come back to the 90's
Uggghhh
And what is that "formatting" bullshit, that's what WordPad was there for.
if they keep dumping unwanted features into it at what point does it become a competitor for ms word?
😭😭😭
NOT MY NOTEPAD! NOOOO
Whaaat the fuuuuck?
I’m still weirded out that Notepad uses tabs now. No, I want to have 7 open Notepads for my various notes!!
I remember having loads of trouble with the tabs because they didn't close when I closed the whole thing. So I'd have text files opened which I'd delete over time, come back to see a bunch of tabs, say "oh what's this?" try to see what it is and having NOTEPAD CRASH 'cause the file was deleted.
yes, that was a perfectly fine solution. And you could make them rectangular (a wont of mine) and then put them in different places on your (righthand) screen!
RAGEEEEE
God damn it I'm switching to Linux and using VI.
it is always Notepad++ anyway
At least your copy opens... bsky.app/profile/kevj... How have Microsoft managed to break notepad so badly? ☹️
The Butlerian Jihad makes more sense with every passing day.
Change the Regedit to make notepad++ the default.
The original, non fucked Notepad is still there thankfully. MS just smeared their Copilot all over it.
Even without the Copilot stuff, there's still too much about Notepad that I don't like that's either on by default, or the UX sucks. If Microsoft wants to push a fancy plain text editor, they have one.
Thank you Rory. Btw with all the notifications I only have enough time to read the first line of this right now, I'll come back later to read the rest. Have a good one my friend!
Hey what the fuck
More incentive than ever to use Sublime
There truly is no safe place in regards to privacy anymore 🤦♂️
Notepad++ ftw
AT THIS POINT i dont care if its linux or upgrading to win7, JUST GET OUT OF MODERN WINDOWS
This is why notepad++ is superior
Copilot being in notepad shows how microsoft will always go for shitty bloat before literally anything else
Notepad++ doesn't seem to have any AI bullshit... but normal people shouldn't even know that tool exists, let alone installing or running it.
Why people shouldnt know a better tool exists?
Me and Whiteboard. I wouldn't care (or even notice) when my Surface can't connect to the network in the classroom, except that Whiteboard won't start without a network connection. I know that some features won't work w/o net, but the core feature, one person hand-drawing, should be self-contained!
That's gonna be a "No-pad" for me.
Haha
VS Code has been my go-to editor for everything for a while now. It's better than any other editor out there imho, even for small things like lists.
The new text mode edit isn’t too terrible at least
Someone needs to get hurt for this tbh
"Surely THIS time, the people must yearn for a new, worse Clippy!" - Microsoft
Mate don't open Paint
NOOOOOO
I opened it today to add some badly drawn arrows to a screen capture, and I almost cried when I saw it.
Wait a second you don't use Greenshot for that?
Why, though? Snip tool's built in, and I just have to ctrl-V into paint, scribble what I need on top of it, and ctrl-C it back. If I was doing QA work or something else where I needed to do this 100 times a day, yeah, I'd probably get a program that lets me skip opening paint, but otherwise 🤷♀️
snip tool has scribbling built in tho???
No, but hence opening paint. Like I said, I don't need to often enough to worry about one extra ctrl+v/ctrl+c.
"Capture last region" is amazing. Plus open direct to the editor which ahas obfuscate, highlight, etc. Screenshot straight to a file in one go..being able to do it all with keyboard shortcuts..It's just nice. Originally prtscrn did none of this and snip copied a subset of it but not enough for me :)
Fair. I just don't use it as extensively, I guess. Win+Shift+S for snippet and Alt+PrtScr for window is all that I ever use.
Paint is shit since Windows 8, or when did they took away the old interface. The only downside of paint was its inability to work with transparency.
And for whatever reason you can't *save your layers*! If you save and close, it flattens the image
They added transparency in the latest version... Well... Kinda, technically they just added layers... And they broke a ton of other stuff in the process
I have very specific unprintable thoughts about what will happen if I ever meet the bastard who did all that to paint
Okay but have you specifically opened it in the last month or so? Actually don’t worry there’s nothing new no need to check
Me when I use Notepad++ cause then at least the odds of the code not being jumbled up mess is low
Anyway totally not an excuse to share this notepad-plus-plus.org
In 100 years the only program will be Notepad.
I literally stopped using Word to avoid this crap. I have ADHD Microsoft, I don't want MORE distractions.
You should see latest South Park on AI (ChatGPT). 🤌
I'm offended that there's even bold and italics. Putting AI in Notepad is like putting Wi-Fi in a pair of sweatpants.
Are you not connecting your sweatpants to the SwtPnt app? It uploads all of your vital sweatpants data directly to your CLTHd account so you can log in and see a minute-by-minute breakdown of the sweat saturation levels of your pants! It orders wipes and new pants automatically with Amazon Prime!
Thanks this made me want to fly to silicon valley and fight the first guy in a vest I find
Dude, no. They don't wear vests now, they wear oversized boxy t-shirts with Latin phrases or hyphy logos from their dumb companies. They're also always on the phone. Those are the guys you want.
linux
At least they're bringing back edit dot com...
When I upgraded to windows 11 and it asked me to sign in to use notepad I almost became a domestic terrorist on the spot
Part of enshittification, I suppose. Need to add useless stuff to justify needing the latest version.
How do I get rid of copilot altogether?
This looks sus af and in general you absolutely shouldn't run any powershell commands off the internet but it's pretty well known and trusted among nerds. Under tweaks you can disable a bunch of stuff like copilot. christitus.com/windows-tool/
You should probably make a backup before running it and be conservative with what you shut down.
I had to renew office last month (well, opted to, not had to) and instead of the new $100 price, went to basic for $20 and there's not a whisper of Copilot. IDK if this helps you? I have zero issues with notepad, which is use so, so much.
Excellent!
Yeet Windows, I imagine
Formatting?!! In Notepad?!!
just use Notepad++
I use wordpad. Intentionally installed after they took it away.
But also notepad++ is there too!
listen... even without Copilot, wtf are all these text-formatting options doing in NOTEPAD?! who is heading development of this program, an emacs user? (thats a little joke for all you vim degenerates out there, youre not any better, just horrible in a different way, and i love you all deeply)
this is so upsetting... im on win10 still and i write almost all of my audio scripts in notepad because i just need something extremely minimalistic that i can type words into on the screen i hate everything fuck offfff
It's bloatpad
Notepad.net
I prefer sublime text myself
Windows never fails to remind why Microsoft alway has a place in the top 5 most evil tech companies chart. Ad panels (in a business OS!) in start menu, proprietary installed candycrush, embedded dubious "news" sites, now integration of theft machine. Never understood how people could get an Xbox.
Good thing I ran Win11Debloater before I touched anything on this
There’s always vim. ✨
Not yet a problem on Linux.
They add copilot but not basic HTML markdowns? 😭 B I just want to strike through some stuff damn 😞
Honestly, the tabs, bold, and italics options are a bit much.
They shouldn’t even have bold and italic
I've been using notepad++ for a long time now, quite happy with it.
Switched to Linux when MS 11 came out and never went back.
We need the cracker barrel campaign but for this
open notepad settings and what the fuck are you talking about notepad settings
the only valid notepad setting is "word wrap" everything else is fascist adjacent
Word wrap Y/N Night mode Y/N Font size [ ] Have I missed anything?
all acceptable accessibility options that do not change the format of the file or the data pasted into notepad
my first thought reading this was "that's a bit extreme" and then I thought about it for 30 seconds and was like "actually no that's just accurate"
At a push, I'll allow for default text soze too, and that's only because I am The Old now.
as long as it adds nothing to the file itself, no formatting of any kind, i'm good with that. bold? italic? i'm out
Couldn't agree more, happily there's a fix to get old notepad back. They made it a hell of a faff but I'm glad I did it: www.windowslatest.com/2025/03/09/d...
Someone mentioned in this thread if you uninstall notepad, the old one takes its place. I haven't tried it, I don't have W11
Didn't work like that for me, I had to do no end of tinkering to associate .txt files with notepad. You don't seem to be able to change associations for txt files as easily as other file types. The link describes it.
Weird. Wonder if it's in the registry?
I did this, and yep registry edits fuck windows 11, every kind of customisation needs a registry edit
Oh oh, not good.
They yassified notepad
stop using windows?
Just turn it off. And honestly, native markdown Rendering and WYSIWYG Editing is honestly fire.
Just a reminder that Notepad++ is still a superior product - it's doubleplus good! And it's free! notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/
I am saving this to notepad for future use…
I see what you did there
Old Notepad is still there and you can go back to it: www.winhelponline.com/blog/restore...
📌
Wordpad now has 2 Co-Pilot buttons just to differentiate it
wtf indeed...
kinda weird how Personal Computers were a thing for about 20 years of human history before we borked that entirely with greed kinda sucks to be born right before that happened and so for my entire life to have been cultivating these skills that are about to be obsolete, huh
Yes I was brought up with the understanding that… things improve with time? Especially tech. We learn from mistakes and fix them a lil more each time. Am I in a completely different universe now where that was never the case? Or, regular universe but, time moves backwards? I can’t decide. Both?
It’s both.
About 10 years ago they figured out that open fraud, stock manipulation, and data arbitrage is a lot more profitable than actually making useful goods.
Really wish you were wrong on this
More like 10, and that's being generous
Text formatting in notepad ruins one of it's most important uses. The extraction of pure text from a file that word has completely fucked.
They forces me to be a RETVRN guy for a fucking Windows computer when my new work laptop replaced right-ctrl with a fucking copilot button. I used right-ctrl all the time, apparently!
ClippyGPT
Classic Microsoft Bloat.
I use notepad so much at work and I hate it so much...
What in the cloud-saving, hyper-scaling, ai-powered, hostile design hell is that shit?
It's too much. I'm going to open Windows solitaire to take my mind off-- (blown to smithereens by unskipable ads)
One thing they definitely won't have considered: Some kids are allowed to use a laptop for official exams. Obviously the rules are strict (no Internet connection, programs need to be basic). So we generally give them Notepad as all they can do is type/save. Looks as if it won't meet the regs now!
no they *definitely* considered that i bet
I would have done so much worse on my exams if I had to fight copilot every step of the way. The fact that Microsoft Word had font colors was distracting enough.
Look at how they massacred my boy!
What did they do to her?
if i, whatever stupid reason, wanted to use copilot or any kind of stupid ai assistant for my writing thingy, I should just download some random app online, cause there sure is alot to choose from. Not everything needs to all be on one thing, and this is especially the case for ai in notepad
I am in mourning ⬛
Copilot?? In notepad? Why would you need copilot. Its notepad
I've been seriously thinking about switching to Linux. tbf they are not rolling in these features here in Finland due to privacy laws. But Windows is just generally a pain in the ass with it's constant updates. I think something like Linux Mint might be a better option already.
Yes, it is. I finally took the leap to full time when windows failed to install twice and I had to do loads of command line fixes to try and repair it. I gave up and used Linux where things just work.
they fucked up Paint too, it's so sad
There shouldn't even be options for bold or italics or headlines or lists. It's fucking Notepad. That shit's for Wordpad.
what the fuck
this is like bimbofication but for software
It's been a long and slippery road to the bottom...but we're not there yet. What has happened to SW, mirrors what has happened to American society.
They're bringing back "Clippy"!
Libre Office on Linux
Because what everyone really wanted was Notepad with Super Clippy.
Clippy lives!
Why isn’t this WordPad? They have had a more fully featured RTF app for decades. Why not just beef that baby up? It just causes confusion to mess with a plain text reader. Can I even look at zips and things here? At least they have given some love to the INCREDIBLY old CLI Edit.
Big tech has completely lost the plot
Deeply uncool of them
At this point why dont they just bundle vscode in with fresh win11 installs and have it be the default text editor
Worse, why does Visual Studio have a totally different base editor component than Visual Studio Code?
Thats simple enough, visual studio is eons old and code isnt (and mostly stolen from open source contributions)
VSC has AI shitware built in now too.
Exactly my point. Its a significantly better text editor, and you cant even argue notepad is lightweight and no nonsense given the direction theyre taking it in
Not on Windows 10
thats dying in 2 months
GOOD!
I do like that hit has tabs now. Still prefer notepad++.
i just gagged
Also they seem to constantly reset the default app for .txt to Notepad. I manually set it to Notepad++ once a week or so, but the Explorer association always ends up back at Notepad.
they have played us for fools
couldn't be me, gedding it on with getit.
I have a dedicated NUC for running windows only when I really need to.
Can’t wait for an AI-infused MS Paint.
Mary Jo Foley is going ape right as we speak
I genuinely think the decision maker responsible should be beaten with lead pipes
Notepad has one job: recording text. If I wanted spellcheck, or autowrite, or whatever AI garbage they're shoving at us without our consent, I'd open Word. But no, I opened Notepad. Because I just want text. Thanks, Microsoft. I hate it now.
I just downloaded wordpad from 10
Notepad++
What I have been doing is taking an old Notepad doc, saving to a new name, clearing that document out. MS does not make anything easy. I hate WIN11 even more than I hated WIN10
I dislike even that now gets app updates. I don’t need updates, I just want to use it as I have been using it for decades ffs
this is bait for me to rant about the bad OS some more
Yeah I wanna see more notifications. Get outta here
If I wanted to be a member of the disgusting .txt bourgeoisie, I would use WordPad
MS has spent over $10 billion on OpenAI and Copilot and dammit if they're not going to put it in every damn app they can.
Because people still don't understand what these billionaires are trying to do Or they'd be revolting
at least Notepad++ is still lovely
It's normal! I type stuff and it saves what I type! It can do other stuff too, but only when I want it to!
💯 with the sentiments here, but did want to point out that the formatting is just markdown rendered which you can also turn off. I did right away. I like my markdown how I like my text files. Raw…and preferably UTF-8. That said, I spend most of the day in WSL with git, hx, and other CLIs and TUIs.
it's notepad it should not have markdown or anything like that it's notepad.
If you *really* wanna go bare bones, you could use `winget install -e --id Microsoft.Edit` for a command line editor, since Vim and Nano technically support markdown
it still has a GUI unfortunately, but `echo "foobar" > test.txt` writes directly to a text file, where >> appends and `type test.txt` reads it
I hate the fact windows 10 is ending support soon and I don't even like windows 10 that much. why does copilot have to infect everything? it even infected Ms paint, like what the fuck?
H1? In notepad? Bullet points, hyperlinks?? They turned notepad into Word 97
Wanna leave windows yet?
*opens Notepad settings, nothing happens* "I know you were planning to disconnect Co-Pilot, and that's something I cannot allow to happen."
In my day the only app we needed to write was a plain breadbowl with a side of ranch to dip it in
Lucky! We only had leftover cocktail toothpicks we used to scribble with mustard on sheets of kraft paper.
Microsoft won't even leave my *trackpad* settings alone! I just learn to scroll however the last update decides to leave it now. Trying to be productive on MS leads to brain ache.
this looks promising. thanks!
Now for a tiny, powerful replacement for Windows.
Or you could install linux, it's pretty good
In truth, that's what I'm going to do ... my PC is supposedly not W11 compatible anyway, and I can't be arsed to buy a new one.
I'm running linux on 20yr old boxes, you'll be fine and drinkin' Wine
SteamOS is coming if you want to play games
I ditched windows and have been running the KDE ubuntu variant, and gaming with steam works just fine, there is no real reason IMO to wait for SteamOS.
Absolutely, and if anyone's on the fence, dual boot
Is it really? Because that would be amazing.
Proton exists, so you actually don't even need to worry about not having games. I play everything from a big MMO to old Flash games with packaged emulation. I've only found like 3 games I can't run, total.
Nothing comes close to FPGA but, you wanna play Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha on software emulation?
I've played enough games for one lifetime. Although I do still enjoy Scrabble.
Linux it is then, you won't regret it
Oh yeah, do you do Fedora? Red Hat? I've used them, and for my purposes they're probably fine. The file sorting systems took some getting used to, but I can tailor that a bit (or just get better at using them).
Exfat is supported across every distro now
📌
I would recommend Notepad++ Abandon MS products one at a time.
Now I'm thinking I need to go and find an early version of vi, and do the bare minimum porting to get it running on windows...
Just install Micro unless you need vi(m)'s full features? micro-editor.github.io
Do you need an old version of it? GitBash comes with a version that seems to work just like what I'm used to on Linux.
I was kinda joking, and more thinking of going to some of the archives of early bsd
Vim is already available and you can install it with Scoop (and maybe also other package managers)
I always just use vim in wsl if I need something along those lines Was more aiming for a joke of heading soo far back to be as far as possible from slop integration. Hell, maybe I should've suggested porting teco just to be more obvious
To be fair, one of the earliest versions of MSDOS actually came with Edlin, so almost the same thing.
You can also get the good ole DOS text editor back.
I will never use vi, the text editor that tortures you. bsky.app/profile/iain...
I've been using it for 25 years, so I'm used to the torture 🤭
vim is the good pain
Ah, then you want emacs!
Eight megs and constantly swapping 🤭
Before I totally divorced Windows from my life, I used to run Cygwin, so I could run real vim.
I hope Notepad++ is forever spared.
Click here to sign up for ad-free Notepad!
Word now has TWO Copilot actions in the pop-up menu when you select text. IDEK what the difference is and I suspect that there isn’t one. Like 2 different teams at MSFT were both working on the “inject copilot everywhere possible” project at the same time. bsky.app/profile/kare...
They also put it in OneNote, which — the whole point of OneNote is for me to put MY thoughts from MY brain somewhere. What would copilot even accomplish in a note taking app?
I like how now when you click on an underline for spelling IT BLACKS OUT THE WORD IT’S TRYING TO CHANGE who the hell thought that was usable and how had they never used spellcheck before
