"Release the Epstein files" is the new "Pee Tape," except that the contents of JE's little black book was made public back in 2020 so I have no idea WTF people are asking for: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I had my partner quiz me on this on a road trip once when we were stuck in traffic! 😂 Until recently, Jacksonville was the largest US city with a GOP mayor—now it's Dallas. There are currently 8 GOP mayors in the top 50: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

EVs cut brake dust by 83% thanks to regenerative braking. That means cleaner air at pedestrian crossings, bus stops, and bike lanes. Exhaust pipes aren’t the only source, brakes matter too, even if they almost never wear out on an #EV Could this reshape how we measure urban pollution?

There's a narcissism that comes with being part of the lower end of Dunning-Kruger. They think they know better than everyone else and are offended by any notion that they might be wrong or have opportunities to learn. They think everything is a debate or zero-sum. They don't see contradictions.

Yup—I always have to point out how much BS people are willing to tolerate if it means a good public education for their kids. Also, I am still trying to understand wtf is going on with superintendants?? Seems like a nationwide problem:

That said, most of the TechBros pushing AI slop on the rest of us and trying to get us to offload our (and their) emotional labor onto LLMs are absolutely not doing so in good faith and should *not* be given benefit of doubt.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
So without getting an argument on social media (😅)—for me, it's the thought that counts, and often that does include effort. There seems to be as assumption that buying a Hallmark card or using LLMs *must* be because the person is lazy—it very well could be! But I don't think this is a given.

...and without judgment! We are, after all, just a bunch of monkeys. Even native speakers struggle with language—I think this is one of many reasons people love pop music! I do think "help me write a respectful condolence letter that captures my feelings" is perfectly valid.

E.g., I have had anti-Trump people discuss the DC deployment with me by asking, "Why do you think he isn't sending the troops into the areas where crime is higher??" as if any of this is being driven by rationality.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
For the rank-and-file DC political class, I feel like it's less "supporting" Trump than trying to manufacture a less stupid reality—I think there are people who are averse to "simple" answers because it makes themselves feel dumb and powerless, so they have to over-intellectualize everything.

Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent

Recruiters are also (as I understand it) not paid well + not respected, so it's rare to get someone in the role who knows what they're doing. I'm sympathetic, but that doesn't make them any less moronic or less a cancer on the tech industry itself.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
Combine all of that with *overwhelming* demand for tech jobs, recruiters are now literally using AI to screen out candidates without actually understanding what does vs. doesn't make for a good hire. It's awful.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
The issue here is that most tech recruiters in my experience have *never* actually worked on the product side of tech—this is in stark contrast to a field like law where (as I understand it) most legal recruiters are burnt-out lawyers.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
The coding exercises are fine, but I have found that "talking it out" is way more informative. The problem is that most active employees don't have time to interview due to poor project management, or else they are only given candidates that recruiters have already selected.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
There are a lot of "certifications" for technical software positions (e.g., Security+ or AWS certs) but a ton of them are irrelevant expensive busywork, so usually the people you want don't have them + the ones who have tons of them are compensating.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social) reply parent
The "AI-is-taking-away-entry-level-jobs" argument though is a fig leaf & red herring—AI has been *incredible* in my job, but not for any of the reasons I've seen cited in the countless breathless articles I've come across. The bigger problem is that tech job hiring has been hijacked by morons.

Left turns are especially dangerous—in Chicago, 39% of pedestrian fatalities/injuries from drivers occurred as a result of an aggressive left turn. This is because modern cars have even-wider A-pillars than older cars—i.e., the beam to the left of the windshield—creating a person-sized blind spot.
Ken M. Haggerty (@kenmhaggerty.bsky.social)
Public Service Announcement: No, it is not legal to turn left on red in #STL or Missouri, even if you are turning onto a one-way street. (There was an attempt to change this in 2018, but it didn't pass.)
