There's a narcissism that comes with being part of the lower end of Dunning-Kruger. They think they know better than everyone else and are offended by any notion that they might be wrong or have opportunities to learn. They think everything is a debate or zero-sum. They don't see contradictions.

Recruiters are also (as I understand it) not paid well + not respected, so it's rare to get someone in the role who knows what they're doing. I'm sympathetic, but that doesn't make them any less moronic or less a cancer on the tech industry itself.

Combine all of that with *overwhelming* demand for tech jobs, recruiters are now literally using AI to screen out candidates without actually understanding what does vs. doesn't make for a good hire. It's awful.

The coding exercises are fine, but I have found that "talking it out" is way more informative. The problem is that most active employees don't have time to interview due to poor project management, or else they are only given candidates that recruiters have already selected.

There are a lot of "certifications" for technical software positions (e.g., Security+ or AWS certs) but a ton of them are irrelevant expensive busywork, so usually the people you want don't have them + the ones who have tons of them are compensating.

The "AI-is-taking-away-entry-level-jobs" argument though is a fig leaf & red herring—AI has been *incredible* in my job, but not for any of the reasons I've seen cited in the countless breathless articles I've come across. The bigger problem is that tech job hiring has been hijacked by morons.

Like, there *is* a middle-ground between armchair quarterbacking vs. being put out to pasture. The fact that you can't get elected again is actually an asset—speak up!! Go on the offensive!

It really shouldn't be standard operating procedure anymore for termed-out Presidents—especially one as young as Obama!—to silence themselves "out of respect" for current officeholders. You're an f'ing politician, act like one!!!

However, it's important to note the kinds of things it will confidently give you the wrong answer for (at least on the free versions): - Numbers/math/counting - Geography/maps - Text-in-images - Citations provided as text (vs as links) - Medicines/health - Data aggregation - Visual place recognition

I think a lot of the AI hype is BS but there are definitely use cases where it has been *fantastic* for me: - Debugging errors in my software code - Generating meeting minutes from audio - Creating stock images for social media posts - Certain kinds of data processing - Finding obscure files online

Ranked choice can help—e.g., I have met voters who don't want to vote for a "losing" candidate because they think that reflects poorly on themselves somehow. RCV lets them place their preferred candidate first & the "safe" candidate second without worrying that they are "throwing away" their vote.

More briefly though, it basically boils down to this: (these are people who can barely hold a single thought, much less two)

My unfounded theory is that he thinks he can pocket the tariff money or, at the very least, hand it out as favors to friends/businesses and/or as funding for MAGA politicians' pet projects. He also believes (IIRC) that paying for things is dumb, which is why he is always stiffing contractors.

(To me, the Democrats' problem seems less like message cohesion and more that their message sucks or is generally absent, regardless of broadcast channels.)

I guess my question is, what is a recent example where Democrats' lack of message discipline and cohesion (versus just not hammering enough on a specific issue) would have benefited an end-goal if only there were a stronger party line?

Brooklyn Dems are trash (in contrast to Brooklyn Young Dems, a separate progressive entity) but glad to see Bichotte-Hermelyn change tune after supporting Cuomo until like two seconds ago. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of their political relevance & influence.

The (more concerning) side effect of this is not just file systems but not being able to organize *anything* into a hierarchy of abstractions—e.g., I asked some younger programmers to organize their work into an outline (like you would for an essay) and they couldn't even wrap their head around it.
