They violate Finland's (and Sweden's and Poland's etc.) airspace with military aircraft every now and then. They violated Estonian airspace just two days ago and most of UK's airspace violations are by the Russians. It happens all the time.

A reassuring statement. A positive outcome of all of this is that we are seeing bridges being built between other countries besides the USA. I'm sure the EU and Canada, for instance, will benefit from increased collaboration and trade between us.

Yep. I'm all for AI being used in weather forecasting etc., but to us "average" people, it's being sold as exactly what it should NOT be doing. AI should free us to communicate with friends more, to do more art and to think more deeply, not do those for us (sic) so that we can be "more productive".

Text of CAUT advice: Given the rapidly evolving political landscape in the United States and reports of individuals encountering difficulties crossing the border, CAUT strongly recommends that academic staff travel to the U.S. only if essential and necessary. In addition, CAUT recommends that academics who fall into the following categories exercise particular caution: Citizens or residents of a country identified in media reports as likely to be subject to a travel ban Citizens or residents of a country where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S. Travellers with passport stamps evidencing recent travel to countries that may be subject to a travel ban or where there are diplomatic tensions with the U.S. Those who have expressed negative opinions about the current U.S. administration or its policies Those whose research could be seen as being at odds with the position of the current U.S. administration Travellers who identify as transgender or whose travel documents indicate a sex other than their sex assigned at birth Academics should carefully consider what information they have, or need to have, on their electronic devices when crossing borders and take actions to protect sensitive information where necessary.

Hello, craftsky 👋 - weaving my first rug ever is well on its way! 😊 Best decision of the year for me to join the course and begin weaving. Really enjoying it. I only hope I will be able to finish the rug by Christmas!

A photo of a large loom with a partially completed rug in it. The rug's colours are a frame of alternating brown, pink and maroon around a grey rectangle in the middle. The colours are reversed on the bottom side of the rug.

That pattern is beautiful, as is the colour!

It would be interesting to learn what specifically people get angry about in different countries.

Started a new hobby a couple of weeks ago - hoping to finish making my very first rug ever before the year is out! Actually sat behind a loom last night and got the work going, veeery slowly and with a good amount of insecure fumbling, I might add! 😅

A close-up photo of a loom with an inch or so of a rug being made on it. On the foreground of the picture, there are three stick shuttles with gray, maroon and blush red-coloured weft material on them.

I just found myself in a peculiar, unpleasant headspace when I read the news a moment ago and the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle ended their short article on the event with the sentence: "Joukkoampumiset ovat yleisiä Yhdysvalloissa." (Mass shootings are commonplace in the United States.)

I had no idea sauce whisks would be made for right-handed people. But then I bought one and watched it come apart whenever I whisked with it. Soon enough I realised it was because I was using the "wrong" hand to hold it. It works just fine if I (very awkwardly) use it with my right hand...

I worry that people in my field (including me) are missing the real phenomenon. We focus on how people adopt disinfo and how to correct single pieces of info. But the problem is broader sets of knowledge; of belief structures. I know how people construct those. But how do we challenge, correct them?

I was pretty sure my works were in some of these LLMs, but it's still infuriating to see. I spent years developing my skills and creating my art, and these billion-dollar companies are just stealing all of it.

We still avoid the smile and go with mouth small and tight in Finland by saying "muikku" (= vendace, or European cisco). 😅

To think that they loved science enough to pursue a degree in it, dedicating several years to their study and then left science altogether. That is so sad. What a loss to the scientific community.
