It is possible for strong gun culture to exist without having constant violence. For example, take Switzerland. Switzerland, despite having very light gun control and a VERY powerful gun culture, has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. That said, the US is clearly doing something wrong.

There are other nations which have a strong gun culture without the constant violence of the US. Switzerland, for example. I think the problem in the US is a combination of easy gun access and a cultural lack of respect for firearms, and the lack of military or police training among the populace.

It should also be noted that there are countries which have a strong gun culture without constant violence, for example Switzerland and Finland. We can have guns without constant violence. Guns are deadly weapons, and should be treated as such.

We’re going to go on a rant for a minute, and yes we’re bringing some history with us. Back in 1755, Benjamin Franklin wrote words that still echo today: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Trial is not unnecessary because not every German was a Nazi. And there were even Germans in the death camps actively trying to save as many lives as they could without being noticed. And even one incident where German troops joined Allied troops in a mission to eliminate the SS.

Universal basic income is UNIVERSAL. That's a key detail. You can do a pilot that provides unconditional cash to a thousand people, but unless they all live in the same small town of 1,000 people, it's not truly testing UBI. That's where we see the big impacts, like boosted local GDP and less crime.

Trotsky was literally killed for disagreeing with Stalin. It wasn’t a “beef”, it was murder. And communism isn’t the only answer to fascism. Consider that between 5.5 and 8.7 million people died in the Soviet famine of 1930-1933, a death toll similar in scale to that of the Holocaust.
KylerVadari (@kylervadari.bsky.social) reply parent
Total death toll no less than 5.5 million deaths in the broader famine, and at least 3.3 million of those were ethnic Ukrainians. Regarding whether it was a genocide, scholar Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term “genocide”, states that it was genocide, and an experiment in Russification.

A gun is used for terrorism not because it is small and concealable, but rather because it can put a lot of lead downrange in a short amount of time.
KylerVadari (@kylervadari.bsky.social) reply parent
While I agree that guns should be registered and documented, with serial numbers on the receivers, I think Australia has gone the wrong way with gun regs in some respects, going off of size rather than fire rate. The guns that are used in mass shootings are nigh universally semiauto.

I never said they don’t influence it, I said they don’t control it. Unfortunately there are a lot of LDS folks who forget the core ideals of the church, and vote for the wrong guy. The church is pretty far to the left of Utah legislature, because Utah legislators are pretty far right.

The church believes in equality and freedom, and a core belief is that everyone should be allowed to do as they wish, so long as it does not infringe on the freedom of others. Utah legislature has shown a hatred for minorities, particularly LGTBQ, and that does not sit right with the church.

And Finland’s tentative alliance with the Nazis was exclusively for the purpose of retaking land in Karelia, lost to the Soviets in the Winter War. After the Continuation War, the Nazis refused to leave Finland, so we fought them in the Lapland war.

You want a gotcha? While the Soviets were on their way to “liberate” Poland, there was a massive insurgency in Warsaw. This insurgency, known as the Warsaw uprising, saw the early liberation of Warsaw from Axis forces. But the Soviets halted their advance, allowing Germany to wholly raze Warsaw.
KylerVadari (@kylervadari.bsky.social) reply parent
My point isn’t that the Holocaust wasn’t bad, just that it’s not the only genocide in history. The Soviets committed genocide as well. In one instance known as the Holodomor, about 5 million Ukrainians died of famine, likely deliberately created by Stalin to eliminate opposition.
