Mocking people for food they grew up eating is just petty and childish. Drinking milk is normal, so is eating natto, menudo or okra. No one needs to hear that you think it's gross. Grow up and let people eat in peace.

Blocked the really annoying anti-milk guy
Naive me thought this was an pretty innocuous thing to say. Didn't anticipate I'd have to block anyone.
you block people for having food opinions? you are very very uptight
No, I blocked people for saying I endorsed cruelty to animals, and for general rudeness.
I wish they found a more clever and entertaining way to say they opposed what you were doing, at least it would be fun
What I'm doing? Huh?
I wouldn't mind a Hindu giving me shit for eating and drinking cows if they did it with humour and love
You'd be surprised how hostile some people get over simple things like this on the internet.
Hope this isn't troublesome, but... what's "menudo"? I'm curious, here in Brasil it was the name of a popular ancient boy band & googlining it doesn't bring any results about food.
Not troublesome at all! I always thought the band was named for the soup.
Possibly, they're from Porto Rico, were they might have knew that soup. They were really famous here in Brasil, but we don't have this soup tradition (most plates here that use tripe use it in the form of sausage).
In Mexico it's a very traditional soup with beef tripe, hominy, potatoes and peppers. Soup your grandmother had on the stove. I know it's served on New Years Day because it's supposed to help cure a hangover. Because of the tripe, some people avoid it.
The smell is one that if I'm in a restaurant and someone at the next table orders a bowl I have to leave. It's definitely an acquired taste and very good for you.
Thank you!
I’m from the north of Mexico and we eat the menudo without potato but with add oregano and chile piquín ,lot of onion . Is so yummy
Thank you.
Thank you.
Hehe, boy band Menudo "ancient" like the 1980s, how could people live like that? At least they had car phones.
Thank you.
Some people, amirite? I've never been a fan, personally 😎👍
Please pass the deep fried rat turds.
Gonna show this to my intestines, they keep taking foods away from me via force
Some people are so insecure they have to resort to trashing milk as a way to boost what they feel is their intellectual advantage. Peoples egos are what play into this. We are really no different than any living being on earth. It’s our mind that convinces us we are superior.
I grew up on Spaghetti O’s and boiled hot dogs- no joke, dad would boil a hot dog in the morning before school, put it in a ziplock baggie, and send me on my way! I could never judge!
You had me till natto
But okra…. lol
Fried okra
It's great.
Especially pickled!
Both fried and pickled okra are awesome. Raw okra? Not so much.
Have you ever had it boiled?
Nope, and no intention to. Hated the taste and the goop.
I never could bring myself to try something oozing with "snot".
Pickled is surprisingly good but I love it rolled on cornmeal and fried.
Yes!
I prefer it fried all time favorite food
Yeses!
I’ve never had natto, gonna have to try this☺️
It’s… an experience. My wife grew up with it, father in-law loves it. We tease when it comes out because half of the family has to leave the room.
Who are you talking about?
Mocking is a bad thing, but eating foods that harm other creatures /our planet is also bad. Dairy industry is inherently cruel. It’s also expanding to countries where most are lactose intolerant, causing health problems. Also we don’t need it for calcium. nutritionstudies.org/dairy-indust...
While you are correct, what other people eat is their business. As an aside, more people are being conscious of where they are getting the food they eat. More people are supporting local small farms and growers. And others are too poor to do so and I'm not going to judge them for trying to survive.
I don't see the queues of SUVs at the McDonald's and KFC drive-thrus getting noticeably shorter. I'll grant that this is anecdotal.
Also the appeal to ‘small farms’ makes no difference to the early and cruel demise of the animals. No decent person would subject their companion animal to the same treatment.
I'm not sure what that has to do with my statement regarding more people being conscious of where they get their food. There will always be people who want greasy fast food. That doesn't take away from the people who want unprocessed food.
I suppose it was an aside to your aside — my own anecdotal observation in response to yours. As to your main point, what people eat is their business, but when it's destroying the planet I have to live on, and supporting avoidable harm to animals and humans, I'm allowed to notice and comment on it.
We mustn’t forget that animals and nature are given no choice in the matter whatsoever.
It’s kinda racist tbh
Exactly, unless you're eating raw oysters.
You can think whatever you like, just don't say it out loud. And maybe for your own sake, don't hang out at the oyster bar.
Wow. You are tense.
Is it still mocking people if they tried it? Like if you come have our version of tuna casserole and your response is, nah girl that’s disgusting. It’s your opinion not mocking me. If you’ve never tried it that’s another thing. I think diet soda is disgusting… not a dig on people that drink it.
I think what's being referenced is when people who were not asked just volunteer their opinion about your delicious lunch that you've been looking forward to all morning.
Ahhh okay. Oh no, that’s not okay. I was raised that even as a guest you try everything unless you have allergy and you say thank you and to really try to taste new foods with an open mind. Sometimes it’s just cooked wrong. Most okra I’ve had is gross… it’s slimy. Most to the south and it’s good lol
I think it's okay to turn down food politely if you don't like the look or small or it. Politely though. "I don't really eat fish, thank you."
And even then there needs to be wiggle room. I have had Menudo. It was a terrible experience. However, from people I have met that hear my experience, what I had was not prepared correctly. So, I’m open to trying it again.
Some cultures that’s not okay, but that’s part of learning what you can before hand. I definitely prefer being able to politely refuse but that’s usually based on knowing already I don’t like it or have a texture issue with it. I’ll usually try anything at least once. I like having food adventures
I get you. Being polite is important.
Thank you for clarifying with me as I clearly misunderstood the original post and you were willing to help clarify and have a conversation. Much appreciated
Thank you! Somebody needed to say that! 😁
You’re welcome. some people are really not getting it, even now.
Let people enjoy things and mind your business! If you're truly curious, politely ask how it is to them! No need to be dramatic!! It's not that hard! It shouldn't be hard!
Even Chicken Butts?
Depending on how its prepared, all foods can become favorites. (except of okra of course)
True. Plus, as a white guy, it seems crazy that we were given either bagged lunches of chips and super-processed meat and cheese sandos or the basically-just-sugar PB+J. That or the cafeteria serving deep-fried everything, literal fast food, canned crap, nothing fresh. I wish I got daily bento boxes
Luckily school lunches have improved. My high schooler usually has pizza, salad, water and fruit (picky eater). They’ve pretty much done away with sammies for lunches and give them decent stuff.
Wait what’s wrong with okra now?! Okra is delicious.
As long as they do not insist that you participate
that's a given, I'd hope
Except for Brussels sprouts!
Try them roasted and then a bit of salt and bare bit of maple syrup and you might change your mind.
Never roast or barbecue Brussels sprouts. Put them in with salt and a large pat of butter in a microwave bag and steam them. Serve in a bowl with vinegar hot sauce.
Nope, even that. You can think they're gross. You can talk about how gross they are in your own home. You can lecture your family about how gross they are. But if I'm eating brussel sprouts and you tell me how gross they are, you're being rude and I might stab you in the leg with my folk.
I would never do that. I’m civilized.
Wow! Now I want to taste the OG variety again, just to compare.
I love Brussels sprouts 💚 If you don’t then STFU and leave more for me!!
I’m currently swapping for black olives
My Kid( an adult) calls them junebugs. I disowned her
Satans testes
hahahaha.. good one.Made me laugh for real
Thanks. I was going to say unwashed, but considered it too much
Fawk.. I nearly choked...🤣
I choked that first Christmas dinner
I love black olives but that is the only food my dogs will refuse to eat
You have a smart dog
I also love black olives! If they aren’t at holiday dinners there will be WORDS 🤬
Roasted in garlic, olive oil and salt until slightly crispy.. Oh hell yeah
Yes! Can also top them with finely shredded Parmesan, caramelized red onion, & drizzled with balsamic vinegar reduction! Brussels sprouts are delicious. Some good ideas for cooking here!
So... of course I bought some today.. And real Parmesan and vinegar.... Too lazy to cook today But tomorrow!!
Ok is it weird hat Now at 6 am I am craving sprouts. Glad today is shopping day( and my buddy is the produce manager 😉) The problem is most people have tried boiled to death sprouts and they are indeed Gross. My exFIL boiled them for an Hour!! Umm yum. Not
Add in some bacon or pancetta cut in ribbons and omg yum. I adore the sprouts!
I am Now going to be eating hem for at least a few days .Pancetta! Love it too!
🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞💙💙💙💙💙
My favorite way. But hey, I like them raw, too. (Try them sautéed/caramelized in butter or ghee with onion, garlic and pecans…)
Pecans? Hmmm never had them this way.but yes fresh drom the garden raw are amazing
LOL Love sprouts, not keen on olives. Shall we swap?
Damn yes
Hey now!
Which I never liked until I had them carmelized, with balsamic glaze. In other words, I liked these, because they no longer tasted like Brussel sprouts at all.
They are awful aren’t they?
I agree with you. However, I used to like eating ketchup and plain noodles as a child and I think that in particular deserves mocking.
What is this and why are you in my feed?
Probably someone you follow commented in this thread. This is not "your" feed.
Wish people understood that you can not like something and keep your mouth shut and let others enjoy it
I don't take anyone's permission to enjoy anything away by saying I don't like it
I think you’re allowed to not like things. I think the real crime is when people have no idea about what something is and say they don’t like it b/c they don’t know what it is. What’s the point of living that life? 🤷♂️
I think youre right, we should judge the dislike by how well informed it it.
Agreed 🙌
Lutefisk anyone?
Agreed and agreed! Personally I think McDonald's burgers are pretty gross. I'd eat menudo, natto or okra (as long as it isn't overcooked) over McDonald's any day of the week!
Or:
Only one I can't get behind is milk. It's not refreshing, it's heavy leaves a film and isn't a flavor that seems satisfying. Tf are you drinking a cup of milk for, a calcium tablet would be enough if you aren't getting enough? Ntm the dairy industry is only still alive because of government bailouts
Uncut okra IS GROSS. When you bite into it, it's exactly like...
In related news, I’m excited to try the Pop-Tart ice cream sandwich variant.
I don't get sushi. It's not about the raw it's about texture.
Very true. Every time, I think, "I didn't eat it with your mouth. Why TF do you care?"
It's when there are victims and avoidable cruelty and stuff.
Thank you I Bid Ode to you & I give you a free half gallon of fresh frozen apple juice in lo a state of frozen animation juice to behold as well worth it
Enjoy!
Who the fuck thinks drinking milk isn’t normal?
✋ bro you squeeze a dick-shaped giant nipple protruding from a huge sack on an animals underside and warm liquid flies out. how can you think it’s normal to drink that that said i agree w/ OP 100% on everything else
? What you just wrote is 100% the opposite of what I posted.
i don’t think it’s normal to drink milk but i don’t think people should be mocked for what they eat
Lots of people, although I can't do an accurate count on here because I automatically block them for being, for the most part, privileged fuckwits.
Cows
Lots of people. And for them it's not. Which is fine. Food preferences are fine.
Cows get forcibly raped to produce your milk “preference”. Block me too please.
Will do!
This!
It's definitely *normalised*. The dairy industry is necessarily, systemically cruel — and many folk merely don't know about it. I didn't, until it was explained to me. Normal does not always mean good!
Black pudding….yum
A cold glass of milk alongside a bowl of spaghetti is elite.
I grew up , well, almost in Montana. Food choices were definitely different from the south. Took awhile before I could actually say ‘not bad’. lol
I agree 100%, but people who eat avocado toast are gormless mooks.
Things I grew up eating: pickled pigs’ feet, pork skin, head cheese, chicken organs (hearts, liver, gizzards), and milk with Coke mixed in. I don’t eat any of those things now, but I liked them as a child.
100%. I always say, if the food is getting eaten, there’s a good chance it’s tasty. Because people don’t eat awful food. So just try it. Green eggs, ham, etc.
Agree Kids work it out for themselves, I used to swap my cold tuna mornay sandwiches with the Dutch girl's liverwurst sandwiches.
Why do people need to comment on other people's habits? If you don't like it either move along or STFU. I read that person's comment on adults drinking milk, stupid. Maybe worry about people drinking alcohol.
Oh, gross ! Okra, slimy, blech ! 🤣
Cow's milk is for baby cows, in the same way that human milk is for baby humans. None of it is for adults and consuming dairy isn't benign, it means this happens...
Don’t yuck anyone’s yum.
Agreed. But boy, don't we have a lot of petty and childish people just looking for something to mock?
sigh, apparently
Some conversations are just learned People just repeat an unexamined pattern . They don't actually mean anything by it. They just want to yip and think engagement is friendly.
Don't worry, we'll all be eating Soylent Green shortly. Do you know Soylent Green is made of people?!!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
👏👏👏👏👏👏
👍
I fricking love milk.
I agree but please don’t make eat okra, please!!
Tea should be drunk black, with no milk!
Don’t yuck my yum!
Eat what you want but it really isn't normal for adults to drink milk.
and who decided that? The almond ‘milk’ people? It’s a healthy product in moderation with nutrients that are good for all non-lactose intolerant people.
Nature decided that. See: Primary Lactose intolerance
Are humans purposefully impregnated to keep milk flow going then take the baby away so more milk is produced? Over and over again? No? Then why are cows? It’s not normal, because it’s not for humans. We’re not feeding dogs breast milk.
Respectfully, normal is defined by opinion. Animal milk has been a life saving product for human consumption when human milk wasnt available. I eat meat raised for human consumption. Its my choice and considered "normal ". Your view is a personal moral one, and that's OK.
LOL. You've made my point. Who is human milk for? Who is cows milk for? Any mother's milk? That's right. Babies. Name another species that consumes milk into adulthood then tell me a single species behaving that way is normal. Drink all the milk/milk byproducts you like. I happen to love cheese.
"Name other species that consumes milk into adulthood" What other species do is the limit of what's *normal* for us?? With our thumbs & brain? So clothes, language, music aren't normal? Preserving, cooking, canning food isn't normal? If dogs could, they would milk cows. Dogs love cheese.
I appreciate you letting us know you don't get it, either.
There’s nothing to get. You’re saying that something that hundreds of millions of people have done through the centuries isn’t “normal”. But by definition it is. Normal doesn’t mean natural or optimal or integral or good or innate or instinctive or beneficial. Just common and ordinary.
Ooh, lots of blocking potential here.
Who mocks people for okra? That's good stuff
But Boiled okra is slimy gross 😂🤮 I like fried 👍🏼😊
Oh, God, that is the absolute only food I simply can't eat after I tried it once. Snotty okra.
👍🏼🙂
what's wrong with milk? I ask, drinking a cup of chocolate milk as of this writing.
Don’t yuck someone else’s yum!
right?? it's not hard.
"YOU ATE SHIT DIFFERENT THAN ME! THAT MAKES YOU MY ENEMY! MY SNACKS ARE GOOD! YOUR SNACKS ARE BAD! I'D BE LESS ANNOYING IF MY LIFE WASN'T SAD!"- dorks online
Pickled pigs feet.
This isn't a competition bob.
Rural Kansas as a kid. We also had pan fried chicken, bacon and potatoes for early morning breakfast on Sunday mornings. And stuff called chow-chow. Rhubarb pie.
Rhubarb pie 💚🩷💚
You haven't had it like my grandma made it. Really good. 😂
Grew it in a garden in the back yard. Watch out for the spines when you pick them.
I love rhubarb. I love tart flavors.
It went from garden preserved in Mason jars and stored in a tornado cellar before it was opened in winter and made into pies. It was a different world.
Sounds like my childhood
Jeffrey Dahmer's eating habits are the only ones that should be critiqued.
🤣
Well, we put cocktail spear of pimento-stuffed olives in a specific customer’s chocolate milk (he’s 8) because his parents have olives in their drinks so to each, their own.
Right?!?!
Damn. All of those things are delicious too. Some assholes need to STFU and maybe lean outside their comfort zone. At least I won’t have to share with them in the meantime.
That mocking comes from people who eat processed poisons, and have no culture. You don't like it go away and eat another hamburger and clog the arteries to your brain some more.
I’m sorry but I WILL continue to mock my husband for continuing to eat the Peanut Butter Mayonnaise Bologna sandwiches he grew up eating. 🤮
Family members are fair game.
Ok good cuz he’s gonna get drug for the rest of his life for that nasty concoction
I tried it once as a no thank you bite
Yeah, I never heard of anyone else eating that combo besides my mother. I thought it was gross but she always said don't knock it til you try it. I just couldn't!
I love Okra
I have no idea what natto is? 🤔
Sticky beans. They are awful, but popular in Japanese cuisine.
Hmm....very interesting. 🤔
Yeah, you’re right drinking milk is normal. Have you looked at the modern dairy industry lately? I mean a real hard, close look? If jerking a newly born calf away from her mother so that mom can be milked to death is normal, then we deserve the hell scape we are making.
My post is about tolerance and avoiding being rude. It’s not about milk. If you’re defending intolerance and rudeness, well okay, but I don’t think that’s an effective way to win hearts and minds.
My sincere apologies if I offended you. And I do agree with you about rudeness and intolerance. But some habits and traditions are intolerable and need to be called out. Especially when the cruelty is kept hidden and lied about.
That's a problem with the industry though, not the milk itself. If people had the knowledge and choice they would rather not have inhumane acts on anyone (This is a fact btw, people buy green if they can)
The industry is driven by demand for the product. The two are inextricably linked. Cows do not magically create milk, and no farm, regardless of size, keeps any animal alive longer than is absolutely necessary. Capitalism has no room for pets. You now have the knowledge to make a choice.
Firstly, no. Industry is not driven by demand. Prices are driven by demand but wether that maked industry possible is seperate, or as you said "cows do not magically create milk". Secondly, so you agree?
So the industry would exist if there was no demand for milk? That’s what you’re saying. Show me where anyone can purchase milk that doesn’t involve the ‘problem with the industry’ you mention. It doesn’t exist.
Firstly yes, look at Ai currently. It has 0 market value or interest but the industry still exists. Same with censorship, anti-homeless, stocks and other non-selling industries While I will source some stores, even if there weren't it doesn't matter. Since the industry decides production not buyers
Almost all sold unpasteurised milk is animal friendly, since they are too small to be factory made anyway www.google.com/search?clien... And some lists www.ethicalconsumer.org/food-drink/s... www.greenmatters.com/food/animal-... thehumaneleague.org.uk/article/whic... ethical.org.au/categories/15
Yeah, you tell em.
... or Marmite. I ❤️ marmite.
We lived in several foreign countries as a child...mom was a gourmet...we ate things no one else would
Not sure how this rambling stuff materialised in my feed. But have to say this: 1: Macchiato without milk is just dull espresso. 2: Bindi (okra) Bhaji is one of my favourite side dishes. 3: I love fish for breakfast.
When I moved to SC I had fish and grits for breakfast and it was outstanding
Not sure what 'grits' is, but fish is always good.
Grits are made from dried corn and it's ground up and cooked in liquid until it has the consistency of oatmeal, only slightly gritty. You add butter and eat with fish or you can eat it sweet like oatmeal.
Aha, when you say 'corn' I take it you mean maize? A sort of porridge? I suppose it might be nice spiced up with chilli, or sweetened with pitaya or some other fruit. Could work with a sweet fish like sole or zander. Interesting. Thank you. Always looking for new culinary ideas here 😀
Exactly! It's like the maize version of mashed potatoes or oatmeal. It's very nice. I think you'd like it
I shall buy some maize and give it a go. Bit fiddly getting the raw yellow thingies off the stem though, maybe better to steam it first? Have to chuckle as well. 'Grits' wouldn't look good on a menu. Maybe rename it as 'purée de maïs'? Sounds more appetising.
Yeah I think the name is why a lot of people won't eat it haha. It comes already ground, if you can find something similar to this where you live www.vitacost.com/bobs-red-mil...
I actually hate British 'food'. Roasted beef and Yorkshire pudding is retch-worthy. And dead chicken makes me run. Unless it's cooked Portuguese style with shitloads of chilli.
Maize flour is available here.
What is your favourite fish? I have three: Indian Ocean butterfish, Atlantic wreckfish, and swordfish. I can't place one above another. I love shellfish too, clams and goose barnacles above all. And crab, especially soft-shell chilli crab in Singapore. To die for.
I love food and cooking. Being a chef was the career choice I didn't make, I chose journalism, and ended up making a living as a travel and food writer. I still regret it. Convinced I could have got a Michelin star or two. Seafood is my 'thing'. But at least I've experienced the world. Lucky.
Grits aren't as finely ground as flour. Very similar to polenta if you've ever had it, but usually with white corn rather than yellow (same plant, just processed differently). The corn for grits usually cooks up a little softer, making a looser porridge.
I love and chuckle about some American food words. I mean what have hamburgers got to do with northern Germany? They have no ham in them, and were invented 2k years back by Romans.
White sugar on white bread .
Seriously, you want me to not mock people who eat these? (I've eaten, or at least tried, worse)
and I love okra, and pigs' feet, and head cheese!!
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?t...
I make fun of my sister all the time for her okra lovins, but to be fair, if it wasn't okra, I'd find something else. 😜
Siblings are fair game.
Great advice across the board. Quit messing in everybody else's business.
No worries. Just ensure regulations keep it safe and pasteurize that milk.
People need to learn to either say 1. Nothing at all 2. "I've tried it, but it wasn't for me." 3. "No, thank you" There's so many better options than telling people their ethnic foods are disgusting
True. When someone at a gathering asked me if I would like some octopus I just said, no thanks, I had some of that earlier this week.😊
Don’t yuck my yum
I live on Vancouver Island in a popular tourist destination. I see tourists (always German for some reason) walking around and mocking our food in the grocery stores. They don’t seem to ever buy anything, they just scoff. I find so incredibly rude.
I love okra and menudo, well maybe not together. Never heard of natto so I went and looked it up. I would try it. I have always held the idea that I cannot say I don't like something if I haven't tried it, and because of that I have had some pretty good eats. Baby octopus is yummy
Getting shamed for milk is hysterical
You might almost call that "lactose intolerance".
nice one!
It is perfectly natural to boil hot dogs and eat them on a slice of white bread
YESSSS! This was my house too!!! Boiled hot dog in a slice of white bread. My husband still thinks that’s crazy!
Same.
LOL I fry hot dogs in a little butter, then eat them on multi grain bread also fried in butter...for breakfast. I don't do that much anymore, and it freaks out my spouse!
I’m not into tuna because allergies but you could make this work with savory waffles in a pinch. Just saying.
Find me an person in 2025 eating it, and I will not mock them.
Maybe they think its weird or gross because they think turkey sandwiches are the epitome of human cuisine. People are weird, I hope you enjoyed your food. ❤️
Bon Apetite’ Brother!
Yah. Leave me and my headcheese alone. I love that stuff! Although, not being able to find a pig head and having to use pork hocks kind of makes it foot cheese?
Use pigs feet! Pickled. Studenetz(Urania "head" cheese) ,,
I’m allowed to mock okra because I’ve lived in the south where it’s grown and prepared and it’s never tasted like anything but rotten snot to me. I don’t fault those who eat it, but I cannot fathom why they do.
I felt this in my soul 😂 But yeah, we know better than to rudely say it to them. IDK what's wrong with people.
As my 8 y/o niece says, “Don’t yuk my yum.” Simple.
The best way (in my opinion) to learn about someone is to sit with them and share a meal.
Still gonna make fun of my brother’s bologna, mayo and jelly sandwiches, but I’ll cut the rest of y’all some slack.
I'm 67 and still drink milk. I'm not apologizing to anyone.
The dairy industry is perversely cruel, which a lot of people are merely unaware of.
True that.
If offered just say No thank you...no need for frowns and Eeews. It's insulting. I was vacationing in Jamaica and ackee fish was on the breakfast buffet and an American lady next to me bellowed "Eeewww" with such disgust. I had a quick calm personal chat with her and I wasn't nice about it.
I mean…we eat fried pig for breakfast in American. Some people would consider that weird. It’s all relative.
Good for you, and how rude of her! Especially at breakfast. People are especially emotionally connected to breakfast - let them enjoy.
Plus it was delicious... prepared in an omelet or as a side with the best tasting fresh fruit I've ever tasted.
What about the canned stuff, its all I can get here and I have been tempted to try it..
Just spoke with my Jamaican colleague about this food- she told me she had a relative who killed some family members with improperly prepared Ackee- I’ll never know if it’s delicious or not.
ON PURPOSE?! I need to know more about this story.
The point is about letting people enjoy the food they desire not about botulism, a person who obviously can't cook, or perhaps a murderer.
Of course eat what you like wherever you are - and no murder was involved here - just like pufferfish at a sushi restaurant- I won’t be eating it because I am a great big scaredy cat
Ackee is highly toxic if not fully ripened, so it probably wasn't botulism, murder, or cooking skills. Just someone misjudging how ripe the fruit was.
I thought they used an undercooked ackee as a murder weapon 😬
Ok I am convinced.. Not going to eat ackee. Might send some to MaraLardo tho
I checked online because I thought I remembered something about a fruit like this. Certain parts of the ackee fruit have to be removed or they can cause serious illness if not prove fatal. It would be like insulin shock. I believe she wanted to warn you: do not DIY with ackee.
Ummm guess it is a no for me. I draw the line at poison
I love menudo and fried okra. Also sardines...which often elicit a "eewww" from folks. And I dont care who doesnt like those.
I LOVE FRIED OKRA!!!!
No wonder American tourists are called "Ugly Americans." Why would you go to a foreign country and expect to eat food that looked familiar?
If it was at the buffet, then obviously some guests wanted it. I guess she wanted a Jamaica with zero local flavor.
I might have given her a tweak about that... and added "why don't you try some?"
Even in elementary school kids were told that was rude and childish. I guess some people didn’t really pass first grade?
Once everyone gets hungry enough - they are going to be looking for the recipes for Poke Weed - a plant that is poison if not cooked properly. But it is growing profusely in this heat and humidity. A lot of very poor people survived the depression eating Poke.
Polk Salad Annie by Tony Joe White 🎶😊
Ooh! Okra! Now that's a lovely veg I haven't had in a while. Never heard of natto or menudo though. And I get it. Even I like foods from childhood I liked that most wouldn't... like liver. My grandmother cooked the best liver. Haven't been able to replicate it. Still trying to do it right.
Absolutely! Except for natto.
Gonna give my controversial take here, I love milk! I wish I had some Hydrox cookies to dunk. * I also love RC Cola and Miracle Whip.*
Good Lord. Miracle Whip? Really? GTFO
It has ZIP
Tangy zip.
Milk is our little bit of respite in this life; cookies don't hurt either. 😉🥛🍪
I didn't like milk growing up, my brother and sisters did, they were mean to me😂😂😂 but no I never picked on them.
I'm a milk drinker and Miracle Whip fan. I think Miracle Whip is the most off-putting, controversial product to non-users. For years I drank a diet RC, Diet Rite, but I moved and RC brand was impossible to find. Drank Tab, yuck. Diet Coke came along, then Coke Zero, the very best in my opinion.
If I could get RC Cola and Hydrox where I live, I might try dunking the cookies into the soda!
I’m a mayo preferer and I think the REAL problem is those people/earsblishments that use them interchangeably without letting the recipient know which creates the rift 😂
I agree with that. If a menu says a sandwich condiments are, then lists mayo as one but uses Miracle Whip, that would not be right. But, to be honest, I've not ever been served Miracle Whip in a restaurant.
Not restaurants but I’ve definitely been Miracle Whipped at like small town halfassed delis. They also said it was on a Kaiser roll but it was a plain ass hamburger bun.
Well, I could see that, especially if they think a hamburger bun is a Kaiser roll!
I’d been having such a sandwich craving too, absolutely heartbreaking day 😂😂😂
Maybe tomorrow will be your sandwich day!
I was just talking about RC Cola today - nothing better than a cold bottle of RC on a hot summer day when I was a kid. It reminds me of my dad.
Did you have a Moon pie with it? In the south as a kid we would have our RC with Moon pies for snack. 😊
I do like Moon Pies, but I don't remember them being around when I was a kid (born and raised in CA).
I’m from CA too and I remember Scooter Pies but no Moon Pies.
Gasp! /sarcasm
Substitute Oreos for Hydrox. And then only if you separate one before eating the icing first. RC Cola and Miracle Whip are classic.
I love Oreos, but Hydrox are underrated.
We love what we grew up with. RC Cola at my Grammy’s house. Miracle Whip sandwiches on white bread were a childhood favorite.
Hydrox cookies were first by four years. So, that makes Oreos the knock offs.
As I said, underrated (*criminally*).
Miracle Whip > mayo All day, everyday
Ssshhhhhh, you don’t want to disturb the Mayo overlords!
Might sound weird, but I grew up on peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches. Even better with a piece of lettuce on it.
I might have to give that a chance (- the lettuce).
You lost me at Miracle Whip. 😁😜 I drank a big glass of milk with dinner last night. My sister would give me the breast milk of cows lecture since she’s vegetarian but I like it and can digest it fine. Funny, she does still eat ice cream so go figure.
Does she know???
Just the other day my wife and I were discussing milk. I was in the US public schools - milk everyday. She was in Thailand - no milk. She won't eat most of what I cook. I eat, almost, everything she cooks - some stuff too spicy.
its so dumb its like travelling somewhere and complaining the food is different
I liked every food I ever tried. I ate everything from all nation's. What I knew was the sum total of my knowledge. I only knew what I knew. What I didn't know, I didn't know. When I found out about how food was produced, I changed. Milk is steeped in cruelty & my personal choice was change.
Amen!
Agreed-although, as a Japaneses person, I admit that when my mom ate natto, I thought it was gross 😂
I love okra
I grew up eating brain, tongue, liver, kidney etc etc. Not fond of brain, but liver and kidney, prepared well... yep. I'm not fond of fish, but will eat tuna. "Eww" from someone because it's "offensive" to them? Don't knock it 'till you tried it. And frankly... if you were starving, you'd eat it.
Most of the people that think okra is gross don’t know how to cook it properly
I grew up eating fried bologna sandwiches with Miracle Whip. I ate green sweet peppers that we called mangoes, and my grandmother harvested dandelion greens. This was just part of our culture in rural central Ohio. I try to be respectful of the culture and food wherever I travel. Everyone should be.
We called them mangoes in PA too! I didn’t even know other people called them anything else until I ordered pizza in college and they had an extreme reaction to my request. People were like that sounds awful! Why would you do that? I was so shocked. People eat green peppers on pizza, not mangoes lol
If you research why we called them mangoes, it's really interesting. Oddly enough, it had to do with pickling and happened only in Ohio and PA. Lots of history there. ChatGPT has a very long and interesting explanation.
I still love fried bologna and miracle whip sandwiches when I want comfort food or some nostalgia. My grandmother made them for me.
I actually envy those who developed a taste for natto, b/c it is so nutritious, beneficial for digestion. As an adult trying it in Japan I could not get past the texture. ☹️ Tiny smoked fishes & various colorful pickles on my breakfast rice though, were delish! Felt light & energized, yet satisfied.
thank you. I grew up eating okra. I don't need anyone to look at me with disgust and go ewww. WTH??
What’s the issue with okra? It’s delicious 😩
I get comments like "it's slimy" - 🤷
Just as a side note... Okra, called Lady Fingers in Asia is sooo delicious when cooked on the grill!
Right on
I just made Mole yesterday and it was sooooo delicious 😋
m.youtube.com/watch?v=oeqX...
Completely agree. Except for broccoli 😜
I like Cheetos Mac and cheese and that’s okay
So where does everyone stand on cilantro? I’m in the percentage that can’t stand it because it taste like dish soap to me.
And that's fair. For those of us with different genes, it tastes like the a great combo of lime and fresh herbs. I feel sad everyone can't enjoy it and don't cook with it, for a group, unless I know they all enjoy it also.
Counterpoint - if you grew up w/it as a seasonal trad, you absolutely can critique the crap out of it as an adult. Lutefisk is disgusting. I will die on this hill. 😆
But not as bad as surströmming, THAT you will find gross ! Would be a nice gift for ICE !
www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9lq...
As for natto its specific to Tokyo area, and even japanese are reluctant. Have you tried ? But not as bas as surströmming, THAT you will fing gross !
The reactions I get when I tell people I don't like cheese, in any way, shape, or form, is wild.
Grew up eating year right... I remember I was 8 and mom made stewed okra it was so slimy. I could not get it down. Was sitting there rubbing my throat and gagging and gasping " It won't go down. " Dad made me sit there hours and then told me I would eat it for breakfast.. Okra is gross!!
I wanna try 納豆 so baaaaadddd!
Is this a real problem or just a lack of real problems?
All of those are normal foods!! Natto may be wildly unpopular but it IS NORMAL!
Fuck, if anything's normal and mundane, it's drinking milk. In 🇫🇮, people drink it from the cradle to the grave. Why? Simply because it's fucking healthy. And since there's lactose-free versions available, nobody has a problem with it. Why make a problem out of something that isn't a problem??
‘People drink it from the cradle to the grave’ but no other mammal does… Because no other mammal is brainwashed by the dairy industry. And every other mammal knows it’s bad for you after childhood.
Entire historical communities survived because they adopted (and adapted to) dairy. If you have European ancestors, you probably exist because they had access to milk/butter/cheese. Food/history are cool. Unnuanced "I'm right" takes about food/history are sad/uniformed. No one makes you drink milk.
“No other mammal is brainwashed…” No other mammals write symphonies, read books or know to can/preserve food. Do we limit ourselves to only what other mammals do? (I am fascinated with the idea of a dairy run by Cattledogs.) Also, adult mammals don’t avoid milk bc it’s “bad” for them.
I mean, adult cats LOVE milk, even thought it is, actually, quite bad for them.
Sure, sweetie. Sure.
my kid packed things like tuna, spinach & olives to school. i told her never let anyone shame you for what you like to eat, nor ever do that to anyone else. i was raised on chix gizzards & beef tongue & was never ashamed 1. bc my mom taught me the same thing & 2. theyre delicious ❤️
Hippy parents will shame you into the floorboards for eating anything but farm dirt.
Or move to gaza
Definitely. Food is tied to culture, memory, and family mocking it isn’t just about taste, it’s dismissing someone’s identity. We can celebrate our own preferences without putting down others.🤷🏼♀️
🎯🎯🎯
By the same token, we can learn about the harms our preferences might support — and adapt our actions accordingly — without taking it as a personal attack, or abandoning our identity, traditions, and culture.
My paternal family heritage was fishing (many lost at sea), then running fish and chip shops. The world is different now and these industries are destroying ecosystems & our planet. I reject them without denying or respecting my heritage. I don’t understand why others can’t also.
Yeah, I have so many familial/cultural traditions around food. I find a way to continue them while reducing harm where I can. Much of this stuff is symbolic — it's the ritual that counts. We can have "fish & chips", in a way that fulfils our traditions, without killing fish.
Indeed. I went to a fish and chip shop in Scarborough that has a separate vegan menu. I call that progress!
Exactly 👍🏼 learning about harms doesn’t mean rejecting who we are. It’s about carrying our traditions forward with more awareness and care.
Okra though?
You don't have to like it. Just don't tell people eating it that *you* think it's disgusting. Be polite.
My response is usually “i’m just not a fan “, but if you like it, great.
What’s natto?
Sticky, strong-flavored fermented beans. Yum. Now I'm craving some...
i'm not fond of okra but i'm not going to mock someone for liking it. that is just stupid.
Some people just grow bigger but never grow emotionally or intellectually.
I agree. Let people eat in peas. 👍🏼
I’m with uou. I grew up what Filipinos love to eat : dinuguan, pork in pig’s blood; Balita, raw duck egg. It’s part of culture, not of social class.
I remember having grade school friends over for dinner..my father was an Italian grocer/butcher. They had no idea what the food was we had. The names were unfamiliar Yup, I was made fun of Now? They go out and can only hope what we had then is available where they eat. Some people are a holes.
i'm glad i grew up in a multicultural family. we're Black Native & our family incl. Italians, Filipinos, and Japanese folks. we ate like kings. 'smelly' food for lunch courtesy of my Indian or Filipino dam...(and I was the only Black kid in school) you're right- folks clamor for it now. xo
It sounds heavenly 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
People have no manners anymore.
It depends on context. Like I think natto is gross but I also think lobster and olives and ham are gross. So it depends whether it's framed ethnically or personally, or whether it's just people sharing differences like we tend to do when we get together. "Oh really? Interesting. I prefer... "
Get your noses out of people’s business. Especially if they are not related to you.
I absolutely love menudo, both red and not red. Even out of a can. I feel kinda guilty if I eat it not hungover. It truly is the best hangover medicine ever. Even if you don't have the proper cilantro, lime and chopped onions. Stuff rocks.
Who the fuck mocks ppl for drinking milk? "Look at this pussy sipping his lil water and eating his lil food"
Don't yuk my yum
I guess we all feel our opinions need to be expressed 🌸
They don't, they really really don't. Not when the subject is not any of your business.
I'm right there with you. But...could we agree that Alabama hot bags are not it? 😂
Well broccoli is smelly and kind of nasty too.
Who gets mad about milk!?!
Is milk cruelty? My cereal must be a horror scene.
Shhhh, they'll form a protest around your breakfast nook.
I mean. They purposely impregnated cows to keep them pregnant and giving milk, then take the baby away from mom for veal. So yea, but that’s just why I don’t drink it. Have at it y’all! Although I do miss some good strawberry milk at times.
Absolutely agree with you.
thank you!
… And live in peace, and love in peace, and worship in peace, and just do whatever makes them happy in peace.
It's funny - my husband and I were going to the grocery store just now and he said, "I forgot to check the caraway seed situation at home before we left." I told him that was not a phrase I could ever see myself uttering but he should do him.
The Caraway Seed Situation. New band name just dropped.
I mean I think okra is a snot plant and is one of the few things I would prefer never to eat again, far beyond any insect. But I don’t think that warrants making fun of someone for liking it. I believe in trying things a few times in a few different ways before passing final judgment for oneself.
I very much Respect folks who like menudo. I've tried - I'm half-Colombian (mondongo soup) - but it'll just never be for me.
Mgmt emailed everyone to avoid heating fish @ work for lunch. I then brought salmon often & microwaved my lunches. I have a brain injury, I need my Omega-3 intake. Some cultures only eat fish as part of their diet, some eat it for health reasons. Banning people's cultural practices is discriminatory
"Lunchbox racism". Asians are very familiar with the practice. I had an old white woman at a law firm I worked at say something to the effect of "Eeewww. Chicken feet!"
I am still allowed to mock my own kids about their cheese string obsession though, right? My biggest parenting failure, right there....
Oh, for sure. Immediate family are fair game for mocking.
yes & I’m perennially baffled that purported adults think it constitutes a conversation, instead of any other thing they could focus on regarding a meal, its history or preparation… It is so… vapid & self-absorbed
Also, people who like spicy food please STOP forcing it on me trying to to persuade me to eat it. Do I hassle you to try my bland food? No! We all have our own unique taste buds. how bout a little respect?
Well, if youre in the States, you should have heard by now that we don't do that! You're diet is everyone problem.
I Agree it's vile and evil what suffering some humans bring on animals
I know. What people think is 'normal' is usually as a result of centuries of conditioning..... where the truths are hidden. I used to argue against people like me now, until I listened and opened my eyes. I have never felt healthier, physically and mentally 🙏 Guilt free.
Who does this? Some backward squirrel-eating hillbilly who gets enraged at his neighbors who travel to foreign countries or genuinely admire fine art? No one pays any attention to them.
Drinking cow's milk is kinda weird, admittedly. I haven't drank it since this afternoon's coffee. 😜😜😜

Eating horse meat was quite common where I grew up. I learned not to mention this in other parts of the world 🫣
It is not accepted in the US, but there are countries who earca lot of things nobody else would. I'm sure more than one horse was consumed on the trails west when they US was being formed. Especially in winter and people were starving on the prairies.
The best argument I have heard for not eating horse meat is that, at least in the US, their meat isn’t regulated for toxins (dewormers, inoculations, etc) like other livestock produced for meat consumption. Not trying to start an argument, just saying.
Honor. Horses have fought with our ancesrors and shed blood with them. I would honor their lineage by you know, ummm not eating them
I never understood how people can be so ignorant in their souls. Like zero curiosity to learn about other foods or customs…wtf is that life? 😑
knowledge improves, resources change
I have the curse of lactose intolerance, so I'll be looking on with a tinge of jealousy more than judgement. Drinking cow's milk isn't worth the pain for me. On occasion, ice cream is worth it. Just make sure I'm close to the toilet first.
Fried okra is to die for! IMO
Absolutely. Even those kids who grew up eating surstromming. (I'm just Californian enough to be willing to pay a bit extra for lengua in my burrito when the place looks right because holy hell that tastes good)
Not only is this true in the cultural sense, but why be rude about what someone eats in a world where so many have to go hungry?
They have no exposure. What is menudo, natto? I ask to learn.
B R A V O! 🎯
Some of y'all were raised by assholes and will only ever be assholes and are probably raising assholes, too. Teach your kid some goddamn respect because some of us will cut off and ostracize assholes in a minute. If you make fun of something harmless that someone else likes, you're an asshole.
Fr. What a dumb thing to mock people about.
Falls into the “mind your own business” category. America would be a much better place if we all minded our own business in anything that doesn’t affect us. Don’t like abortion, don’t get one. Don’t agree with gay marriage, don’t marry someone of the same sex”.
They are just expressing their ignorance. They are not worth taking offense at.
If they are not eating it why would they give a shit.
Who is mocking people drinking milk. Everyone at my primary school drank it. I was a milk monitor as my first job.
Okra. Really. I've seen people eat vile shit all my life, and I'm to the point that if someone thinks tripe, Surströmming, Casu Marzu, rat meat are tasty, more power to them. Who cares? If you have enough time and energy to judge the diets of others, you probably have too much free time, generally.
