yes, you 'can' issues as much money as you 'want'. no, you cannot ignore markets completely, because the UK government also borrows on the bond markets and government debt interest payments is 8% of public spending and can spike higher.

alistair pomegranate 'lappy' percival (@lappypercival.bsky.social)
the first line on the hanoi metro was first conceived in 2003, back when the western end (ha dong) was an entirely separate town in a separate province, and was intended to be kind of an interurban line. it opened in *2021*, when ha dong was entirely subsumed as part of hanoi's urban area.

alistair pomegranate 'lappy' percival (@lappypercival.bsky.social) reply parent
basically to the extent there is a liberal answer it basically amounts to 'what do you mean immigration requires us to redefine citizenship? racist question, dismiss' which like. yes the people asking it are racist but you still have to prepare your answer for the audience because it is real.
alistair pomegranate 'lappy' percival (@lappypercival.bsky.social) reply parent
i would probably guess it's just that this is not the terrain they've ever expected to have to fight and the mainstream of politics didn't really fight over this in the post-war decades and in more recent decades the response to rising anti-immigration sentiment has been just accept or reject.
alistair pomegranate 'lappy' percival (@lappypercival.bsky.social)
