I see the calls not to take out our anger on the National Guard. Those are probably the same voices that said not to spit on members of the SS (Schutzstaffel). This was an act of disdain; not an act of violence.

Trump's order to imprison people for burning the flag is in direct conflict with the First Amendment and was specifically ruled legal by SCOTUS, including Scalia: “If it were up to me, I would put in jail every sandal-wearing, scruffy-bearded weirdo who burns the American flag. But I am not king.”

There will not be a nickel of that funding that will be used for "established" vaccine technologies. It will be cut. Why in God's name are we taking any direction from RFK Jr? There is absolutely nothing in his education or life history that makes him qualified for his position. Nothing. At all.

$500 million is about half of Barda's budget. BARDA's core mission involves developing and procuring medical countermeasures for public health and medical consequences of CBRN incidents, pandemic flu, and emerging infectious diseases ... the kinds of things where mRNA vaccines are likely needed.
Spike (@ldcornell.bsky.social) reply parent
The projects were funded by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, the part of HHS that works with the pharmaceutical industry to develop vaccines and other countermeasures for public health emergencies. BARDA is not dedicated solely to COVID or influenza mRNA vaccines.
Spike (@ldcornell.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the advantage of the mRNA vaccines was that they were able to be developed much faster than traditional vaccines. In the event of another pandemic of some sort, which is eventually inevitable, it is good to have ongoing research.

Walz believed that Uber and Lyft were serious when they said that they would leave town if the legislation was passed. That would have left the drivers without employers and customers who could not use cabs without any service. Was it the correct call? I have no idea.

Notice that this is a bill that he signed. You are probably referring to his veto of the 2023 bill. This bill from last year was the result of a compromise. Compromise means that no one gets exactly what they want.

In May 2024, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed legislation that kept Uber and Lyft operating in the state while also raising driver pay. This followed a period of negotiation and compromise between lawmakers, rideshare companies, and drivers.
