They give them to people who are going to combat zones. There are a bunch of exemptions though. I got one in 2009 but when I was up for a booster in 2018 my son had just gotten surgery so I got medically exempted because I was helping to take care of him.

I do think CPS is chronically understaffed, fallible, and prone to mistakes when dealing with medically complex cases. But man are there some parents out there who are just convinced it couldn't possibly be them who are the problem.
There's this lady on my TikTok feed who has been going on a days long rant about how CPS took her kids and they aren't helping the kids who "really" need help. She lost her kids because she went out drinking at 10 pm, left them home, then crashed her car on the way home and got a DUI arrest.

Nowhere in my post am I arguing that closing schools didn't save lives. I am merely pointing out that it did also have long-term, lasting effects on those kids' education. We spent a year teaching very young children over Zoom and it turns out that most very young children don't learn well that way.
A lot of people on social media talking about the kindergarten "covid babies" this year but every teacher I've talked to in person is most worried about the 5th-8th graders. Those were the kids who missed critical steps when our (Western Washington) schools were closed for a year.
