You can't just frame everything in terms of "defeating him," with it's horse race smell. It's equally about readers appreciating how the constitution is being destroyed in real time, which The Times has a greater role in than in the ballot box. And I'm not someone who quibbles about NYT headlines.

I know she is still much read in the US, don't know if it's equally true in the UK. She would absolutely inevitably be listed as one of the best SF writers of 20C, and many others who would be listed would not hold up as well.

Will, you argue with accounts more than almost anyone. If you are prominent and do that, you face psychic trauma that of course makes this place seem like a hellhole. But if you block immediately without necessarily reading fully and thinking about the comment, you constantly reduce that thousand.

Violent assaults and carjacking both went up in the pandemic, peaking in 2023. They have come down but not returned to pre-pandemic levels. But that's nationally not particular to these two cities.

Sliwa's prominence in NYC dates back to the 70s, it fell to a low level then, Sliwa was one of a number of white men who saw their shot then and took it. Controversial but not the worst. So he's not part of some new low for NYC. None of them are. Mamdani is the opposite, the only vaguely new face.

But to the extent that they don't control it, what is Google speech? Everything they link to is someone else's speech.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
Have Google search results (NOT google AI search results) ever been considered company speech? I think the answer is yes, bc Google has a lot of control over the results, they get a lot of money bc of that. And if Google search results point to a pro bulimia site, they know how to ban it.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
But encouraging suicide? They obviously cannot control that, or they would be. It's terrible for the company, tho obviously not on the level that the family faces.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing about Gen AI even at this point, is no one in the company can know or intend what it will say. That's fundamentally different from other company speech. I am not sure what difference that makes, but it's true. They can make decisions to make it say things, some decisions to make it not say
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent

Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
Of course bad law gets made in the settlement of hard cases. That's also inevitable. But no one fights for first amendment rights of inanimate objects on facts like these. And I think the companies are quite iffy on whether it's their speech, in general, depends on which way the wind is blowing.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
For this argument to work, Ari, Open AI or Anthropic would have to claim the bot's encouraging someone to kill themselves, and going pretty far in that direction as their company's speech. Have they done that? I suspect they won't, and thus will inevitably settle out of court.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
So their defense is going to be tricky as hell. But the mental health issue and Ari's aversion to it is tricking his mind into thinking it's easy.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
I've got news for him. But that says nothing about the legal issue, which is difficult, and will be decided by people who don't understand the technology. Whose fucking speech is it? I don't believe Anthropic would call it Anthropic's speech, for PR reasons if nothing else.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
What I got from Ari's post was that he thinks there's a firm line between mental illness and health, and that he's on the health side, always has, always will be, all his relatives are, and that he had to express this in a repulsive way and he doesn't have to care about people on the other side.

Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh yeah, definitely. I think we need clear common sense feminisms, abstruse feminisms, hard to detangle, austere data driven structural feminisms, queer af fuck feminisms, and feminisms not built on the existence of gender.
Horrified, Lydia (@lfillingham.bsky.social) reply parent
And feminism only becomes politically verboten if we let it. There are many feminisms and feminist theories, you can't pry feminist theory out of my cold dead hands. Note: my hands are only cold and dead in the future, usually the winter, and I obviously don't mean to denigrate the OP.
