I don't believe all people can be respectful. Therefore, I believe people of any gender should use the space that's safest for them, barring the existence of a solo space where any person can feel safe.
I will always share space with a trans woman, especially if it's because they don't feel comfortable in a 'man's' space. Most women feel uncomfortable in spaces designated as men's. People should feel comfortable in any space meant for people.
People make bad choices all the time. It's important for you to place boundaries where they need to go, even if it means those people don't get access to you. I'm always sorry when family and friends choose fear/hatred over understanding and love.
Also, I try to remember that fear and shame are big feelings. A lot of people last out horribly when they have big feelings.
