My great grandad was RGA; didn’t speak much about the war, only told my grandma he ā€˜worked with the big horses’ and had terrible feet problems for rest of his life (not that that was very long, died young after a tough life). This is the only photo we have of him

Yeh well, I grumble about lots of changes like this that there is a lack of long term thinking on. Encouraging people to buy electric cars rather than focusing on getting people off PCP traps and keeping vehicles for longer than 4 years to lower carbon footprint being the big one.

My bug bear is gloss white paint for skirting etc. The old stuff used to stay white, but the new non toxic stuff yellows if not exposed to sunlight. Annoying.

from what I’ve read so far, it was to help keep LRP/efforts behind enemy lines moving as quickly as possible when their mules popped their clogs, but the number of people and resources involved in actually getting the mules prepped and deployed was always going to be huge so seems mad to me.

In 1945 the British Army experimented with the idea of parachuting mules into Burma. The mules were sedated and strapped to a padded wooden platform fitted with statichutes to keep it level - all survived but the scheme never became operational. #MuleMonday šŸ“· Journal of Equine Veterinary Science

So amused by the sight, Manners decided to take Crump and gift him to General Sir Stuart Wortley to whom he was serving as aide-de-camp. Captain John Henry Montagu Manners (The Marquis of Granby) had a less than impressive service record in the #FirstWorldWar but one thing he did do was discover Crump. He spotted the wee terrier outside a farm whilst en route from Ypres to Bailleul - what caught his 1/4 šŸ“· Animal War Heroes, 1933

Ah, no such uncomfortableness here. Michael Bates is brilliant in it, many people don’t realise he grew up in India, was fluent in Urdu and served in Burma with distinction in 3/9 Gurkhas. The show is of its time sure but there’s nothing malicious about it - no need for guilt as it’s damn funny.

D-Day has been brought forward unexpectedly and I’m feeling extremely anxious, so have made a nest on the sofa, got some dark chocolate digestives and some comfort watching quite fitting for today.

No. The gov’s efforts have been beyond poor, very rushed and minimal effort behind the scenes. VJDay 70 is as good as it ever has been in my memory.
