We have that here in Michigan. Owner-occupied get large “Homestead” exemptions. Everyone else pays an extra 18 mils, which is significant. Close to double the tax in some places. It’s not the utopia you imagine. It’s a huge expense for landlords that gets passed directly into rents
People resent housing costs and rent because it is usually their largest single monthly expense. Which i get. But there are no easy answers. And living in your car or down by the river isn’t fun.
Do you feel like you are being “fleeced” when you go to the grocery store, buy clothes, or eat at your favorite restaurant? The only difference is scale. Landlords have all kinds of expenses, and potential liability, and numerous housing and building requirements to navigate. Nothing is free.

I agree about renting and needing more of it. My rant: the problem isn’t housing, which has been growing 3-4% a year. Its with wages, which are only growing 1-2% a year. Why? More than greedy bosses, the real cause is healthcare and cost of it and crappy quality of it. Thats what kills wages. Univ

The answer to your question is that landlords provide housing, something badly needed in most communities. They perform a useful and necessary function in our society. And they get paid something for it, which they should.
