In the before times, we did this for several years after buying our 1st condo. At the time, you could claim up to 9 'dependents' on your W4 before the acct dept. had to report it to the IRS. We played it safe and claimed 8 (for 2 people) & still got a refund d/t the large mortgage deduction.
They likely timed it to coincide with all the damage and 'cost saving cuts' in the big BS bill so no one will be reporting on the public outrage and disastrous effects before or after the mid-term elections.
