I am tired of the circumstances of my life being determined by men on the brink of non-existence who think they’ll never die if they have enough power.

The pigments used in permanent green light differ between brands, but some are made with similar combinations to this colour. My personal fav green for mixing is PG36 phthalo green yellow shade - I use it a lot in mixing foliage colours!

This is made with red chalk or red rock, which is chalk permeated by haematite (the same stuff that makes red ochre red.) PSA: If you're collecting it locally - check first that the area isn't protected, and don't be a dick. Some places around down here (south coast, UK) are protected, at least.

Despite all the religious art, poor dudes in Galilee did not wear white and people who hang around lepers get a lot of nasty shit on them. You have a human god so that they can say β€œI was one of you, I understand, I went to the hard places where I was needed.” Grace, embodied.

The places where you actually NEED grace are filthy and bloody and despairing. Grace is the last cigarette shared in the gutter, the hand of the dying being held by the stranger, the kindness done by the broken.

Grace is a thing that happens in the world. It is not confined to churches, and I suspect you find it more often outside them. It is not a pale bloodless thing wrapped up in incense and white altar cloths.

Four postcard swatches of watercolour paint being made on one larger sheet of white paper. They are: a dusky pink with grey granulation, a greyish teal with blue granulation and green overtones, a bright lime green with a ridiculously strong yellow undertone, and a dark brown with black granulation and a reddish overtone.

I'm sorry, friends. I'm just so bastard tired of having to protest/write to some utterfuckingly line-toeing MP/scream about awful shit, that we somehow still really do need to keep yelling about. Have a nice fluffy moth to make up for it.

A very warm and fluffy pine hawkmoth. It has a very sleek jet plane-like shape, fuzzy speckled wings, a super fluffy body, and thin stripey legs. More importantly, it's not a moth that will try and make itself sound like Nigel Fucking Farage to appease right-wing arsebarnacles. Moths are smarter than that, and frankly have better shit to do. Like flapping around pollinating things, and contributing to local ecosystems instead of being asshats.

14. Lastly… - water boatman (I didn't know they could fly til I saw this'un) - one of many different ladybird visitors - unidentified fly (we get a lot of those, I'm bad at fly ID) - burying beetle & attached mites! Only every had one of these beets drop by, so cool to see. Happy #InverteFest!

A lozenge shaped bug with two long paddle-like legs sticking out to the sides, big black eyes, dark on top and light underneath. It's a water boatman I think. A ladybird beetle, a pleasingly round and shiny hemispherical beet, classic red with black spots. Delightful. A tiny fly of some kind with a round-ish shiny black body, big red eyes, and long transparent wings. The back end of a burying beetle poking out of an egg tray from my moth trap. It's got quite a boxy shape, a pointed bum and spiny legs. You can't really see its head. It's black but dotted with orange mites.

A tiny, long thin flying bug, with orange and black wings that are folded and hide its body, a tiny head, and long impossibly thin antennas. I think it's a caddisfly but don't quote me on that. Another presumed-caddisfly, with very lacey patterned wings folded over its body, long and thin antennas on its tiny head, and a dark colour. Top down view of a salt and pepper coloured speckled probable caddisfly with a long thin shape, small head and long thin antennas. A very orange caddisfly with folded mottled orange and brown wings, a tiny head with round black eyes, and long orange antennas.

The classic common wasp, AKA jasper with pointy stripey bum, somewhat fuzzy head and body, chonky antennas, and long slightly spiny legs. Best stripey girl on the dead fruit clean up crew, A+. An unidentified insect that I'm guessing is some kind of wasp. It has a long thin abdomen, a teeny tiny waist, a boxy body, small head and long antennas. It has long transparent wings and thin legs. It's black all over apart from the wings. A long gangly orange wasp on the fabric shelter above my moth trap. It has a really long body and very long thin legs and antennas. Its wings are transparent. Another unidentified presumed wasp. Sorry, I'm very bad at Hymenoptera ID. It has a long abdomen, tiny waist, chonky body, small head, and long antennas. It's wings are long and slightly tinted brown. It's long legs are orange and its body is black.

They are not ears. But that are where it gets the name eared leafhopper. This beetles a lighter shade of brown overall and seems a little chonkier. But still has a chafer shape. Two beetles similar to the last one, rolling around on my hand.

3. We get a range of spiders in the egg trays. They seem very optimistic, given the size difference between them and most moths. Maybe there's small gnats visiting for them to eat that I don't see, though. #InverteFest

A small brown spider with pale markings on its very round bum. It's sitting in a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap. A zoomed out view of the spider to show a moth in a neighbouring cell of the egg tray. The point here is that the moth is a lot larger than the spider. I think the spider may be a tad optimistic moving in here. A small light brown spider, with it's 8 legs all bunched up near its body and very neat ovoid bum. It looks like it doesn't wanna get out of bed, which is fair to be honest. I did get it out of the moth trap early. A little green spider with tegs and everything else that looks impossible thin and wispy compared to it's big ovoid abdomen. Next to it is a big fluffy nest ball. It's apparently moving into my moth trap trays long term.

2. Shield bugs, AKA stink bugs (which is rude, but I think it's because some of them can exude a noxious liquid in defense.) Specifically green, red-legged, and hawthorn shield bugs. I love these critters, which is good given quite a lot of them drop by. #InverteFest

A chonky shield-shaped green bug, with sturdy little legs, tiny eyes, and thin antennas. It's sitting on a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap being delightful. Another different species of shield bug, this time brown with a little yellow spot on its back, and long red legs. It's marching across a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap. Another different species of shield bug from my moth trap, this time it's much more slender, with longer antennas, mostly green with a light brown cross on its back, and thin green legs.

For the last day of #InverteFest, a thread of things that have visited my moth trap that aren't moths. 1. This friggin adorable ectemnius wasp. Look at its cute boxy little head. Delightful.

A lovely little wasp on the shelter around my moth trap. It's smaller than your average garden jasper, but has the same stripey bum. It's got sturdy little yellow legs, neatly folded wings, and a cute boxy shaped black head, with big rounded black eyes, and little stubby antennas.

@lycomorpha.bsky.social When I first ran into you and you shared your love of moths, I wanted to share this pic with you, but I couldn't find it! Just came back in my FB memories. When I Googled the image, it said it was a Tolype moth. - just beautiful!

A very furry looking moth. The antennae are large, white and fuzzy. The wings, which are closed around the body have horizontal stripes, the larger being a dark brown and the thinner ones are white. I could describe it as having brown wings with two white horizontal bars in teh middle, then some more white at the end of the wings. The head is brown and with the two white antennae, it looks like a vertical brown line. The butt/tail of the moth is sticking out below the wings. Very fuzzy, a mix of white and brown.

For my pigment nerds, I also need to catch up with the red chalk pigment & paint I made last month. I kinda got behind on my pigment bullshit. And now I'm planning on making pigment out of cremated things... I need help, seriously. πŸ™ƒ

A few chunks of red chalk sitting in the bowl of a porcelain pestle and mortar. The ground red chalk being ground even finer by grinding it wet with the pestle and mortar. It looks a bit like I've got tinned tomato soup in there, to be honest. The levigated red chalk solution sitting in a large perspex bowl so the water can evaporate, and the remaining chalk ground and used as pigment. The finished red chalk pigment being made into watercolour paint by mulling it into a liquid binder on a roughened glass plate with a glass mulling tool.

9. A couple of orange swifts. Super fluffy and delightful! Also today's furious grass veneer is an elbow-striped grass veneer, and it is a tiny ball of rage. Look at those eyes. Do not fck with this moth. #InverteFest

A delightful orange moth, side view, with a very fluffy body, and a few lighter and darker markings on its orange ochre wings. It's sitting on a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap. A similarly delightful moth of the same species but a lovely warm grey and brown this time. There's sex dimorphism in orange swifts. This moth is also sitting on a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap being fluffy and delightful. A tiny and very furious looking wedge shaped micro moth with light and dark elbow stripes on its beige wings. It has rounded blue eyes and a livid facial expression. It has thin white legs and darker wirey antennas. Delightful tetchy moth pal.

Mulling some marls today. This is a warm grey marl - I made the pigment by grinding and levitating a small soft piece of marl rock. I'm really loving the non-slip silicone mats, they're making life a lot easier! 😁

My paint making set up: a warm grey pigment is being ground into a liquid watercolour binder on a roughened glass plate using a glass muller. The mulling tool, which looks a bit like an upside down glass mushroom with a flat top, is swirled through the paint mixture against the plate in circular motions. The plate is sitting on a silicone baking mat in a tray, which is on another mat. There's bottles of binder in the background.
