Nice! Thanks for checking.

I think it's a bit better than a rough copy. It looks from here (you will be able to tell for sure) like a collage using used stamps!

Ninian Comper Anne and Mary Reading. All Saints, Croughton. Pretty sure (for now) he is using the Breviary of John the Fearless. In this one he has the same underarm gap in the clothing of Mary. π· (detail) Rex Harris

Aidan McRae Thomson 'why Swynnerton and not some spot closer to 'home'? The most significant connection of this locality to Lichfield could be the presence nearby of Eccleshall Castle, which was then the private residence of the Bishops of Lichfield'π€ Route to avoid motorway tolls‡οΈ

There is another 17th century print made by Wenceslaus Hollar of the same view but with a different statue, that of Charles II (now moved down a peg or two and replaced by a figure of Jesus). π· Chris Bertram Print: National Galleries of Scotland

From Cothelstone, yet another Ninian Comper George (somewhat more distant but still the same figure as medieval George at York) followed by three medieval Georges with the dragons tail wrapped round the leg (Ludlow, St Winnow, Long Sutton).
Mark Culham (@markculham.bsky.social) reply parent
4 Georges from Ninian Comper all based on medieval George at St Martin's, York. The fourth is the one I would be in danger of confusing with Burlison & Grylls but it's a well documented Comper. The other 3 have the tail around the leg which is also medieval and is, I suspect, taken from Ludlow.
Mark Culham (@markculham.bsky.social)
Burlison & Grylls also copied the medieval George at St Martin's, York, and started doing so well before Ninian Comper. Here are four. (Early Comper is so close to Burlison & Grylls that I find it difficult to distinguish between them, relying on records instead.)
Mark Culham (@markculham.bsky.social) reply parent
Another of Comper's Georges that references St Martin's, York, also has the string around the wrist. The dragon's tail curling around the leg probably references another medieval George at Ludlow (there are others) but I have yet to do that one. π·s Aidan McRae Thomson St James's, Lower Gornal
Mark Culham (@markculham.bsky.social) reply parent
Medieval weaponry is not my subject but there's the curious string around the wrist and lance that doesn't correspond with the medieval glass, unless Comper has misinterpreted or chosen to misinterpret the cracks (they are cracksπ€). He repeats the string in some other of his Georges.
Mark Culham (@markculham.bsky.social)
George I've bumped into another of Ninian Comper's Georges referencing the medieval stained glass at St Martin's, York. This is closer still and perhaps closer to the first if not the first. St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent π· @simoninsuffolk.bsky.social

Well I obviously don't know the specific details but even the most inconsequential new findings about shakespeare are treated as breaking news. So I would say it is clearly false.
