It's also odd to make "open-source" a main point here, especially when *the* reason so many other browsers are based on the Chromium project is specifically because it's open-source. It's not an easy problem to explain to people, so I appreciate the challenge, but you can't be flippant about it.

Fair enough, but it's important when making these kinds of arguments to reduce ambiguity. For example, if most people don't know what Blink is, and your goal here is to explain rendering engines, it's bad form to perpetuate the ignorance.

The general thesis of the thread is spot-on (more voices in the market means more interests are represented in the development of the web), but getting these basic facts wrong makes the argument sound disingenuous and hurts the cause. Please do better when posting about this stuff.

The near-monopoly of Chromium is a problem, and a reason I'm a Firefox supporter, but this thread got many facts incorrect. - Chromium is not an engine. It's engine is a fork of WebKit called Blink. - Blink and WebKit are also open-source. - Ad-blocker limits in Chrome are unrelated to the engine.

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.

People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France. So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness. There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to

Tired, but not a bad day today. Important to note sometimes.

Every time. If popcorn were a new invention, it would not survive focus testing.

Spent days on a webdev workflow. Decided today I gotta do it all differently. Times like these hit home that while I code every day, I don't think I'm a programmer. It's a *consequence* of being an artist. I *like* coding, but I feel less good about it every day. TL;DR: Webdev can pound sand.

Plus, people seem to forget where they heard about it. So many "why isn't the media reporting on *this*?" posts that include a shared article from a national newspaper.

Trump having a goldfish-memory and being generally unaware of the things happening around him is baked into the cake.

People act like this is some normalizing conspiracy by the media, when it's literally a consequence of how human brains handle this kind of thing. Newspapers could be writing the "Trump forgot he appointed Powell" story for weeks and it wouldn't give it more impact in the minds of the public.

Yeah, that sounds like what you'd expect it to look like. Security cameras encode at super low bitrates in segments, often with proprietary codecs. But this is just the total lack of faith populist movements have in *any* authority. They think if it's not mint in the original shrink wrap it's fake.

Like, we already have *plenty* of evidence that Trump was a sexual predator. So it is almost better if there's nothing to see, because even if it were revealed that he was on the guy's list as "#1 repeat customer" the MAGA faithful would have something to build up an alternate narrative around.

There's probably not too much there there. I know enough about video metadata to recognize a smoking gun and this ain't it. But, watching the authority-distrusting culture they created and fed now devour them alive, knowing that if they *are* telling the truth it's actually worse for them... 🧑‍🍳🤌

For a week I've been playing telephone tag trying to make a doctor's appointment. Someone there suggested I should leave another message and I asked if I *needed* to or if I could just wait until they call me back, and they told me I "should advocate for myself." Brother, I'm trying.

If saying "trans rights" a lot and featuring queer speedrunners proudly is too "woke" for some people than they can go form their own speedrunning community. Good luck with that.

My hot take on Donkey Kong is that his tie really shouldn't have his brand logo on it. Nothing, or maybe a yellow star from the logo, would be 100x better. Diddy can keep his Nintendo hat, tho. #DonkeyKongBananza

Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are excellent, but they're also familiar. I hope their success doesn't encourage future Trek productions to play it safe. Trek is only as rich as it is because shows like TNG, DS9, and yes, Disco, rejected the status quo and expanded the definition of Star Trek.

The Orville makes no secret that it's "cover band Star Trek," but it also gets a lot about Star Trek wrong, in a way that doesn't just miss the point, but sends the opposite message. Like there's that episode about how cancel culture is bad, or the one where the slave revolt needs to be put down.
