The Labour party right now:

A fake sexual health leaflet called ā€œhaving sex with a flag - a sexual health guide.ā€ There is an illustration of a middle-age man with grey hair and glasses looking closely at a Union Jack underneath the picture It says ā€œyour guide to totally doing it with a flag.ā€

I can't think of a better term for it than suicide politics. It's not just the humiliation of its own voters, it's the gifting of awareness and credibility to its enemy for free. How much easier could they make it? And what's the next nail in its own coffin move? A snap election right now?

None of this is necessarily confined to the elites. A lot of the types of people who were loudly declaring they couldn’t support Labour in 2019 because of the moral stain of bigotry on the party are the same ones now telling you it’s this or Reform. They are telling on themselves. It’s that simple.

The dirty little secret that has cropped up unavoidably with increasing frequency since 9/11 but has become harder and harder to conceal as time passes is that the western liberalism fucking hates Muslims and believes it’s in an existential war with Islam as much as any ā€˜fringe’ far-right lunatic.

I'm sorry but this is insane www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

For roughly four years, survivors of Japanese American incarceration during World War II and their descendants have fought against the Lava Ridge Wind Project. They argued the 231-turbine development would desecrate the land where roughly 13,000 people of Japanese descent were imprisoned. Their forced removal and incarceration is now widely viewed as a blatant violation of civil rights. The Lava Ridge Wind Project, which was being developed by LS Power, a subsidiary of Magic Valley Energy, was approved in December 2024. The approval was part of an effort under the Biden administration to expand renewable energy projects on federal lands. The closest turbine to the historic site would be about 9 miles away. Wind turbines as tall as the Space Needle would mar the horizon, said Abo, who was 2 years old when she and her family were forced to move from their home in Juneau, Alaska, to the camp in 1942. The planned wind farm ā€œjust didn’t fit with the solemnity of the location,ā€ she said.

It’s helpful that politicians do podcasts now because it means we get stuff like, say, former Chancellor George Osborne asking the air whether the security services would’ve tolerated Labour winning the 2017 election and quite obviously implying that the answer is ā€œLOL no they absolutely would notā€.

Emily Thornberry on the Corbyn era,... 28 August • S1 E205 • 1 hr 8 min But I don't think people really have noticed how close Jeremy Corbyn came to winning that 2017 election. I mean, it was against Theresa May. I mean, it was only a few seats. I mean, if she had lost five more seats or something like that, then there wouldn't have been a deal with the Alster Unionists that would have given the Tories a majority. And Jeremy would have been the Prime Minister and you would have been, in effect, I don't know if you were going to be the First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary and so on. There's a bit to me that just wonders, and I don't know whether you have thought about, how would the British state have coped with Jeremy as Prime Minister? What would have happened? So what about, you know, you would have been the Foreign Secretary, MI6 reports to the Foreign Secretary, GCHQ reports to the Foreign Secretary. I mean, how would all those spy agencies have coped with Jeremy? I had quite a good relationship with them. I mean, I think, you know, where I'd been in quite a lot and I think that I'm seen as a trusted person. No, I'm sure they were hoping, you know, the buck would stop with you rather than with the Prime Minister. I mean, Jeremy had been in too. I'd arranged for a meeting with Jeremy too. Probably wasn't the first time they'd been to listen to Jeremy Corbyn. It was always a question about what files they had on him when he was allowed to see them. It would have been quite funny. In my head, but maybe it's, you know, I'm kidding myself, you don't remember that wonderful Chris Mullin book, A Very British Coup, which was also then a great BBC drama. Would it have been, I mean, I just wonder whether the British establishment could have accepted him as Prime Minister, even though it was so close. They absolutely would have accepted you as Foreign Secretary. I've got absolutely no doubt about that, or indeed most of the people who were in that shadow cabinet. It's just the Prime Minister, there are, you know, the most sensitive sort of security level and military level. These are Prime Ministerial decisions, the relationship with the United States, for example. I just wonder, but you think it basically would have worked out somehow?

Man there are certain things you just can't unlearn and one of them is that the "natural party of government" of Japan, a country of 100+ million people, was founded with a briefcase full of CIA cash handed to a war criminal. Oh yeah, we really give a shit about "democracy." Always have.

I genuinely used to think they must have access to some information I don't that convinces them this is a good idea for reasons I cannot tell. I no longer do. I think the best explanation of Labour's behaviour is genuinely something like cowardice and insecurity, a cringing suspicion that somehow...

With Labour, I genuinely believe the answer is that it's a bunch of uni graduates trying to imagine themselves into a stereotyped "left behind white working class mindset" and deciding "those people don't like universities", when what they really mean is "I am afraid they don't like us".

I genuinely think a lot of people in British academia just kind assumed it was appreciated by the government that obviously we're a sector the UK has a comparative advantage in and so worth protecting just from a national interest pov. I still don't really get why that turned out to be false.

It's also in The Independent, as part of a larger piece about how the Democratic Party's intransigence on Israel in 2024 and sudden (and still reluctant) change of heart—or, more realistically, tune—on Israel in recent months is 'now' proving to be massively damaging to the party.

These are just ordinary brits, with their life-sized cardboard cutouts of politicians that we all have, and their Freikorps that they've founded. It could be any one of us.

I just don’t think it’s unreasonable to say the public should be worried when a former senior Labour MP, who famously helped General Augusto Pinochet evade facing trial for crimes against humanity including torture, argues that Britain should ā€˜decouple’ from the European Convention on Human Rights.
