It’s not “only subway entrances”, it’s anything that NYC’s processes put in front of a community board. Routine DHS-mandated bollards installation in places like Times Square doesn’t go in front of them. Not saying it’s rational, but the post-9/11 trauma is palpable.

Definitely excited to read this. Not train-weight related but I also remember a story about Metra Electric using acceleration tables from the 1930s to set speed limits for modern operations. To SEPTA’s credit the Silverliner V genuinely outperforms the IIs/IIIs/IVs.

One of the few benefits of NJT’s awkward and expensive dual modes is that they have mostly eliminated running diesels under wire. Hackettstown trains will use electric motive power ad far as Dover.

London still has diesel trains! Chiltern Services are not electrified and worked solely by diesel trains. The GWR has multiple unelectrified branches in suburban London and still runs a mix of diesel and bi-mode trains for long distance trains to Bristol, Exeter, etc.

Community meetings have gotten a lot of attention in Jersey City after a presentation on proposed bus lanes turned rowdy. There is a long history of meetings being used to stop plans for everything from affordable housing to the restoration of habitats in Liberty State Park.
