The same inherent aspect of cities that make them attractive to those of us looking to live more sustainably is attractive to those that worship at the altar of capital - efficiency. For any given resource input, a dense city gives you the most productive output.

It’s not “only subway entrances”, it’s anything that NYC’s processes put in front of a community board. Routine DHS-mandated bollards installation in places like Times Square doesn’t go in front of them. Not saying it’s rational, but the post-9/11 trauma is palpable.

Yeah the legislature is going to make or break the Sherrill administration. And the current composition and leadership means break, not make.

William Penn is probably the worst school district in all of Pennsylvania - worse than Philly. It’s a bunch of rateable-starved lower middle class streetcar suburbs and PA provides virtually 0 equalization funding to cash-poor school districts.

I’m skeptical of their numbers if Jersey City isn’t on the list at all…

@3underscores.bsky.social might have a decent estimate for the Jersey City numbers.

Bergen-Lafayette in Jersey City is on track to be the new Bed-Stuy within a decade.

There’s a contingent of bad-faith pro-oligarchy people in Dem circles misleading people whose brains were broken by the 2016 and/or 2024 elections.

Yeah there’s an archipelago of black middle class enclaves across NJ. The Plainfields, the Oranges, Willingboro, Somerset, Rahway, Union, Roselle, Teaneck, Mount Holly, etc. None of these are large enough to enter the national popular imagination though.

Community meetings have gotten a lot of attention in Jersey City after a presentation on proposed bus lanes turned rowdy. There is a long history of meetings being used to stop plans for everything from affordable housing to the restoration of habitats in Liberty State Park.
