Just like "AI" is manmade. (last week was explaining all this to graduating engineering students who didn't know places like Stanford were studying AI in the 1950s/1950s or that genX graduated into similarly poor career prospects).

Inflation is you paying more/less for the same service/product. Whether it's the result of govt policies, pricing for profit (be some do have more money & can pay without pain, while others are captured, eg need to eat & heat), or constraining supply (OPEC strategy), it's inflation & it's man-made.

I expect the GOP government will shut down this fall because the Vance-Trump govt isn't interested in govt that responds to American needs or Americans who aren't already wealthy & supportive of the inflationary big billionaire bill. I expect the USD to fall.

Neighbour's incessantly yappy dogs put in the yard 3 hrs ago & RTÉ discusses US affairs, [ignorantly or naively or from privilege] claiming Vance is less dangerous than Trump. Luckily found a less parochial, more wise Irish voice that elicits hope for humanity www.irishtimes.com/life-style/p...

He stresses the role Belong To played in the marriage equality campaign. Many of the canvassing groups sprang from Belong To groups and the young people they worked with also informed the messaging. “A lot of people went to the US and Massachusetts in particular to find the answer to a lot of LGBT issues. But the message in Massachusetts and elsewhere was, ‘love is love’. We knew that was a crap message, so we shifted the message from the individualistic and neoliberal ‘love is love’ to the community message ‘What kind of society do we want children to be in?’ When you ask people that question, and then you allow them their own space to figure out the answer, the answer is almost always good. People want their children to grow up in a fair society. He worries about the “corporatisation of everything”, the way multinationals lobby for legislation, government services are outsourced and corporate algorithms dictate what people see online and pit organisations against one another. “The far right are getting their ‘information’ from Facebook and Twitter and it plays out on the ground,” he says. “It played out in Fairview Park with the Indian man beaten up yesterday … The answer to much of it is really simple: turn off the recommender system. The system was set up to advertise, to get our data and then advertise [to us], but it’s also being used to box people into different groups.

All the folks screaming that it’s a mental health issue…the mental health issue is yours. You have the issue. We’re talking about passing common sense gun laws with mental health guidelines. There are currently states that squash bills requiring a 24-hour waiting period to buy a gun. Nope! Can’t have those, either. See the problem? You want to say it isn’t the guns, it’s mental health - but don’t legislate about that, either!

We ban books in the US, but refuse to protect our children from guns. Because it's not the gun that kills. But it is the book that threatens to kill the ideology that only two sexes and hetero relationships and white people who equate guns and freedom are the gold standard of humanity.

Similiar to Matt's attempt to dictate what reasonable (stereotypical German) people see by a Russian propagandist to disclaim Russia's 'operations intended to bring the war in Ukraine closer to the heart of Europe and to undermine support for Kyiv.' www.nytimes.com/2025/08/28/u...

U.S. officials confirmed the flights but said they were unable to track their origin. They believe the drones have been flown by Russians or people working for Russian intelligence services. On Thursday, the Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, dismissed the reports as most likely “fake.” “It’s hard to imagine this,” he told reporters when asked if Russia was tracking shipments through Germany. “Because then the Germans would be seeing it clearly and they would be unlikely to be silent. So most likely it sounds like yet another newspaper fake.” Mr. Jones said the drone flights over supply routes were “straight-up espionage,” as Russia tries to learn what firms are manufacturing weapons for Ukraine, and how weapons are being shipped into Poland and on to Ukraine.

'just look at their faces' www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/fleeing-on...

Otto R. Frisch: In Copenhagen I heard for the first time the suggestion that the fire that had devastated the German Parliament had not been started by the accused Communist, van der Lubbe, but had been deliberately laid by the Nazis in order to work up public opinion against the Communists; it was an idea that startled me at first but then seemed plausible. After my return to Hamburg my one remaining colleague in the department, Knauer, gave me dinner at his lodgings and wanted to hear what people abroad said about the fire. Although he had become a Nazi Knauer had never let the anti-semitic party line interfere with our friendship. Quizzed about the fire I tried to hold my peace and talk of other things. But when he insisted I did tell him that people were convinced that the fire had been laid by the Nazis for political reasons. He was horrified. “But how can anybody think such a thing of people like Hitler or Göring; just look at their faces!” Knauer kept his friendly and helpful attitude to the last and made my departure easy by finding a small freighter that was going to London and had one cabin for a passenger. On that cockleshell, on a windy day in October 1933, I left Germany with all my belongings in several trunks which kept sliding forth and back in my cabin as the ship rolled and pitched across the North Sea while I braced myself in my berth, unable to sleep.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me? Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

We sued Escambia in federal court for viewpoint discrimination (the case is ongoing). In casting about for a way to defend the ban, the school board landed on the theory that library books represent “government speech.” The government, the board explained, has its own First Amendment rights and must be allowed to speak as it wishes. Thus, it can remove any library book it finds objectionable for any reason.

All you are is a means of production. You supply the workforce. As soon as you stop supplying, you are of no more value. So anyway. That’s not a vision I like, not for my daughter, not for yours. I want my vote to count, I want my neighbors to be safe, I want all marginalized groups to be treated like the full, equal human beings they are, I’d like to breathe clean air and to know my kids will be able to do that, too. I’d like the kids whose parents support this insanity to be able to breathe clean air and have access to a good education and all the other good things, too - it isn’t their fault their parents have gotten sucked into the biggest con I’ve ever seen in my life. The Constitution disappeared from the Library of Congress for a few hours this week, did you hear? Not all of it, just the part that has to do with habeas corpus and the foreign emoluments clause. Weird coincidence. People noticed right away, and raised the alarm. The Library of Congress said it was a “coding issue” and restored the missing parts after a number of hours went by, but this story stinks, folks. It is not credible, not to any coders who have been interviewed. It’s alarming the way it was alarming when the Smithsonian tried to rewrite history and delete the current president’s impeachments. I don’t know what has to happen for his supporters to snap out of the orange haze, maybe nothing will do it, but I sure hope those of you who aren’t really “into politics” start to get engaged. Politics are “into you” either way. See you on the Dark Side of the Moon.

Trump will sign an executive order today that allows your 401K money to be invested in private equity. Aside from what that means for your retirement fund, it will also roughly DOUBLE the amount of money P.E. firms have at their disposal to take over companies/hospitals/housing/etc.

What a fantastic lesson on making assumptions vs. actually paying attention. Vance is the child of gay parents and wore a red hat that said “Make America Gay Again.” The reactions they got are very interesting. Not every red hat is bad and blanket assumptions are often wrong. Proust says memory is of two kinds. There is the daily struggle to recall where we put our reading glasses and there is a deeper gust of longing that comes from the bottom of the heart involuntarily, At sudden times, For surprise reasons. -Anne Carson #everynightapoem #fragment

Here is an excerpt from a letter Proust wrote in 1913: We think we no longer love our dead but that is because we do not remember them; suddenly we catch sight of an old glove and burst into tears.
