Coco Gauff says she broke down to her team after her loss to Naomi Osaka, but they helped her realize there are a lot of positives to take: βWhere my serve started from the start of the tournament to today was a big improvementβ (via U.S. Open Press)

How does he define "normal people?"

She usually takes time off after the U.S. Open.

Karolina Muchova overcomes hip issues to defeat Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 and will face Naomi Osaka. Four straight three-setters.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
They don't. I'm saying Coco has been miserable out there and might be resigned to moving forward.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Naomi Osaka looks so relaxed.

Every time I watch that clip, I love how the graphics guy flashes the 100 Aces to clue them in. This was the year of the Federer/Murray final and Serena was way ahead of them in aces in the tournament, despite playing best of 3. They missed ALL of that talking about Sharapova as highest paid.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
I think once she defended her points and knows she can't drop lower than 3, which is where she is, she stopped stressing. Not that she doesn't want to win, it's just she knows she's a work in progress.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
If you remember, there was a rain delay, and Aga had all the momentum. Instead of bringing the audience in on this pivotal moment, they were yapping about Sharapova's endorsement money and not focusing on how nonchalantly Serena stepped up and aced her way through a crucial game. 100 ACES!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
Yes. I'm impressed that she wants to improve and is willing to struggle, unlike Raducanu, saying crazy stuff like the Top Player step of their game to play her like she's Serena or something.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
How bad are Evert and Fowler? 2012 Wimbledon Final: 6-1, 5-7, 1-2. Serena serves as Aga's lead for 1st time. Serena hit 4 aces. Crowd wowed. Graphics guy on point. Serena on ace #3 before the Chrises get a clue. Aga doesn't win another game. 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2tU...
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
She won't stop talking. She has tennis knowledge but doesn't do her homework. Sub with Chris Eubanks, at least he studies up on the players.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Ignore the alarmist stuff from Chris Evert" about Coco having so much pressure, so much to think about." Coco Gauff has already defended her points from 2024. If she loses this match, she will remain No. 3 no matter what happens. Nobody left in the draw can pass her.

Coco Gauff is not making a dent in Naomi Osaka's service games.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
She had a medical timeout for her hip.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
I can't take Carillo. But Chris and Chris are quite bad.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Karolina Muchova has the worst luck when it comes to injuries.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
"She's all sparkles out there today, isn't she," Chris Evert says of Naomi Osaka. Again, has she been watching this tournament? Osaka has on less bling today.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Chris Evert: Osaka comes into the match as the underdog. Really? Has she been watching this tournament? LOL.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Naomi vs. Coco. It's on like Donkey Kong!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Felix Auger-Aliassime is into the quarterfinals, defeating Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. FELIX RISING!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
I thought this would be a battle. Felix is whooping Rublev's behind. Did not expect this.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
If Felix breaks now, Rublev might start throwing stuff.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Not even a code violation when Rublev slams his racket. They need to be consistent with this stuff.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Alex de Minaur cruises into the quarterfinals.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Looking forward to FAA and Rublev.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
Love her game. Great shot selection. They played with beautiful variety, came to the net and nobody was screaming.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
No way when you have Siniakova.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Note that Barbora Krejcikova plays doubles with Jelena Ostapenko and had ZERO issues with Taylor Townsend. Tense battle. They hugged at the net, and Krejcikova applauded Taylor. Jelena is the problem.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Great match. Props to Barbora Krejcikova, who closed it out like a boss.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Ugh. All that fight back, and now Barbora can serve it out.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Sigh.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Ok Taylor, don't give the break right back because Barbora would be serving for the match.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
That got the crowd back in it and you saw some fire from Taylor!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
She breaks back. Back on serve!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
If Taylor can break back, she might recapture her MOJO.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
Even if she didn't, she couldn't come out playing so tentatively. However, given how many match points she had, it's natural to have a letdown.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Not that she can't break back, but Taylor is playing not to lose, and Barbora is playing to win.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Although Taylor has been in each of Barbora Krejcikova's service games, Barbora seems to be getting more aggressive. The crowd in Armstrong is more pensive. Somebody needs to turn up the heat.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
ESPN app is not reliable. US Open website live scores is better. Although I think they use the same data. There was a glitch with the score live.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Townsend is in the danger zone. Barbora is hitting with more authority. Taylor has lost some energy. Early, but this feels like a must hold.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
With Krejcikova serving first, Taylor has to make sure not to get in an early hole.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
We are going to a third set. I hope Taylor doesn't get too down on herself. She had many chances, but so did Barbora. Time to refocus. Stay aggressive.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
They are playing so well. It's not like somebody is choking.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
I CAN'T TAKE IT!
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Props to Krejcikova, two-time Slam winner. You know she wasn't going down without swinging.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Taylor Townsend squanders more match points. Nervous.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Headed to a tiebreaker! Wow. Way to stay focused, Taylor.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
How quickly things change. Taylor Townsend goes from match point to having to break to stay in the second set and force a tiebreaker.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Jessica Pegula defeated Ann Li in 54 minutes. Despite all that, Pegula must continue winning at this year's U.S. Open, or Mirra Andreeva is the new No. 4. Right now, Anisimova would be ranked higher than Pegula. Staying at No. 4 is the best Pegula could do with the points she has to defend.

Elena Rybakina defeated Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-2 in about an hour. Rybakina's serve and forehand were on fire.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
She knows if she wants to be among the greatest ever, which is her goal, she has to fix her serve. But fixing a serve is difficult and she's struggling.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Elena Rybakina wins the first set 6-1, against Emma Raducanu in 27 minutes. Sometimes, a super-easy draw is the worst thing that can happen to a player. Nothing in the arsenal of her first two opponents could prepare Raducanu for Rybakina's power.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com) reply parent
She should pay you for that fix.
Merlisa (@merlisa.com)
Go Coco. Coco Gauff is into the third round. She is one round from defending her points. As things stand, she would be No. 2. If she and Iga finish in the same round or Iga goes out a round earlier, Coco is back to No.2.

Coco Gauff wins the first set in a tiebreaker but looks so stressed out. She's only 21. At that age, the only thing that gave me that kind of stress was boyfriend issues. And I didn't have a stadium full of people watching me trying to figure out if I should dump him. π
