I didn't understand you as arguing that the best students are only going to come from wealthy backgrounds 🙏 In terms of inequality of 3rd level access, we probably agree that the best way to address that is to ensure more even secondary-level education across the board. In Ireland as in the UK.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
If this is your take though, it's not obvious how it reconciles with your arguments in favour of interview- over grades-based admission.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
It's very much on the likes of Oxford and Cambridge to extend offers to more students from beyond the south of England, the home counties in particular, more students from ethnically diverse backgrounds, etc., etc. And, like I said, hopefully that's something that is changing.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Hopefully things are improving. Certainly until recent years Oxford had something crazy like 80% of its student body still coming from the top 5% in terms of wealth.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
...which is great in principle, and presumably often in practice, but is also in itself the open door to abuse (e.g. if privileged kids who don't have the grades are being admitted at a higher proportion to less privileged kids).

Pedagogy in Ireland could be improved in several ways, notably in terms of evaluation (something that's true pretty much globally), but maintaining as broad as possible a common educational baseline for as long as possible is imo a genuine strength, on the whole worth potential trade-off losses.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
In my school, our English teacher didn't communicate any fixed interpretations, not for poems or plays. Class was all about finding and, above all, defending interpretations. And was a very high performing school in terms of marks (not me, I was a slacker until I went back to university in my 20s🙂)
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Sound. I've a genuine interest in it from an education science perspective, not just splitting hairs.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Not surprising the marking would have some kind of heuristic quantitative dimension. But as described, even an idiosyncratic response, provided it were sufficiently culturally contextualized, would be liable to get as good a mark as a "standard" one. I.e. better practice than looking for "correct".
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
First time I've seen it suggested that markers of the Leaving Cert English papers are pointed to look for fixed "correct" meanings in answers. Many teachers certainly transmit fixed model answers to their students, a justifiably criticized practice, but, if true, what you claim is far worse.

"Defund the police" isn't succinct though. What it refers to in concrete terms are, in general, all genuinely great ideas. But as a slogan it does a poor job of actually denoting those great ideas. If it were succinct, that would not be the case. As it stands, it's pithy but misleading.

No individual Palestinian has done more to maintain Hamas in power in Gaza than Netanyahu. Even after it was well known that they were using a large portion of the funds they were receiving for military purposes, he still made sure the billions got in, even after the PA decided to choke Hamas out.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly: they're an extremist terrorist group. Imagine what kind of person would actively help maintain a group like that in power!
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
I do too. Which is why I think Netanyahu's long-standing active intervention to maintain Hamas in power in Gaza is an absolute, and extremely well-documented, disgrace. However much hate you reserve for Hamas, you should logically apply to Bibi and his complicit cabinet also.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Meaning, even within Israel, "demonstrations" against the Bibi's government began on day one.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Some of them, perhaps. Many who had followed the geopolitics of the region for a long time, who already knew, before Oct 7 what Bibi, Smotrich, Ben Gvir, etc.'s aspirations were for Gaza knew exactly what the response would be as soon as the news of the attack was heard. Even this article was Oct 8:
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
The October 7th attack was already over before demonstrating against it could have achieved anything. I did write to Israeli friends that very day though, telling them my thoughts were with them and their families. It was about all I could do.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd be lying if I admitted that. I have demonstrated against several US and UK led military incursions.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
I do. Which is why I provided one easily disputable point (Arafat did not lie down smiling with respect to Arab occupation of Palestinian land) plus one enormous omission (mention of any violent Zionist actions, whether the King David Hotel, the Haifa and Jerusalem market bombs, etc.).
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
This is getting tedious. Just state what you want to say, providing the appropriate context, instead of chain-posing these juvenile rhetorical questions.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
That would still mean he is incorrectly depicted in the video with respect to Jordan. Do you understand?
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
You're demonizing the Palestinians in every post you make. You literally just said "they only cause trouble."
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, everyone knows that. So that means it was okay for Zionist terrorists to kill 91 people?
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
So you admit that the video is not factual in its attempt to claim that Arafat was perfectly happy with Jordan. Good. You should question much of the rest of it too.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm pro-peace and pro-reality, more than anything else. I don't believe in any narrative that fully demonizes one population versus another. Humans are humans, all groups have good and bad. Now, spill the beans, what was the hotel being used for which in your opinion presumably made the attack okay?
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Let me just point out one other element which perfectly underlines how full of misinformation that narrative is. It declares that Arafat never "complained" about Jordanian occupation, not even mentioning Black September: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_S...
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Striking how the video doesn't mention any of the numerous instances of lethal Zionist terrorism, no? Not even the infamous 1946 King David Hotel attack which killed 91 people, incl 17 Jews. It's almost like the narrative recounted here is not so much factual as... pure one-sided jingoist propaganda
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
Which strategy failed? The strategy of supporting Hamas so that a 2 state solution would be rendered impossible? If it was secular centrist Palestinians (i.e. the PA) making a 2 state solution impossible, why would Netanyahu prop up Hamas? You're deep in cognitive dissonance. Reflect a little.
Christopher J Stevens (@metaphysiology.bsky.social) reply parent
So you approve of this strategy then? And does that approval include the decades-long strategy of treating Hamas as an "asset" and the Palestinian Authority as a "burden"? Because if you do approve of that strategy, then you don't get to complain about Hamas now: they could have been choked yrs ago.
