Look at this graph. The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened. This is why we must build back union power.

I disagree on two main points here. One, this is an "all hands on deck" situation to fight fascism, not a time to split. Second, those in charge would sue, but would cave instantaneously. And most of them would be happy to not be beholden to their funders.

He's conflating the billionaire class with the tens of millions of elders that are suffering at their hands. He's misconstruing the class war as a generational fight. I don't know why, and I don't know why npr is promoting it.

Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
This is pretty misleading, since the majority of boomers are losing health care and much of the social safety net. Today's economic policies, the BBB, works to enrich the oligarchs, and steal from ALL generations. The battle isn't boomers vs. the rest, but the rich vs. the rest.

This is misremembering the obstructionism of the repubs, and devaluing the massive things that Obama, Clinton, and Biden did. Progress has been too slow, for sure, and this is a problem, also for sure, but there have been really great things as well.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
99% of democrats aren't politicians, they are the people that vote. Does he mean democrat politicians? I think that's what he means. Although, that is a problem, it's actually the right wingiest part of the dem umbrella. It does rightly need to be controlled and/or excised, but it's not all dems.
Robert Reich (@rbreich.bsky.social) reposted
Medicare for all, paid leave, universal childcare. Busting up big corporations and tackling Wall Street’s greed. Getting big money out of politics. Supporting unions and fighting for higher wages. If Dems want to win back working people, this is the agenda they must support.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, but the rich are only 1%. It's when 70 million believe the propaganda that we have real problems. We need to shine some reality, and people will vote for themselves instead of for the rich or against the scapegoats that they've been convinced are an enemy.

Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sorry that's infuriating to you. It's not new. The power structure led by the repubs of the last 100 years, (and obstructionism when dems are in power) always fights a class war and profits off it. Together let's fight this fascist oligarchy and bring all power back to all people.

That's not to say that we do need more access to housing though! What you say is also critical!
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
It's not an all or nothing. This is the best way, once people lose their home. Services remain important. The social safety net to prevent this in the first place is also important. Preventing the next generation is important. Preventing climate refugees, teaching resilience to kids, are factors.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent

Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
I personally know some that it is currently helping. The encampments themselves have a high mortality rate. So the relative risk is lower than no action. It's a difficult idea to grasp, but there are best practices that can be followed. More housing and services can't be ignored, tho.

Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
Honest questions over here. Do you think that a repub governor has better policies for the unhoused?
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
There is no glee, for some it gets them help, the encampments themselves are places where people get stuck, there are environmental costs, and it can be done very well. It can also be done heinously. This could be good that we are learning how to do it well! I'm optimistic, but cautious.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
In a vote between him and, say, Stephen Miller, it would be inexcusable not to vote against fascism. Thinking that Ron Desantis is going do better on this, or any issue, is just myopic. And to ignore the good things that he's done is, well, you're prerogative! There are other issues tho.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
It still seems like this task force is a good part of the solution. Definitely not the entirety, but we do want people at the state level working in solutions. It also seems like step one is winning this battle against fascism.
Lepidopteraptor (@micahcf.bsky.social) reply parent
This was a good article. I did like how it mentioned housing first. It blamed Newsom for a bunch out of his control and doesn't offer a solution for encampments, but did show that sweeps aren't a long term answer. We do need affordable housing - but we also need mental health and addiction help.
