It's an extension of "guns don;t kill, people kill. Roberts handed unprecedented and unchecked power to Trump so he could say Me, political?--it's all that guy I gave the gun to."

Uniform code of groveling and supplication
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social)
Apparently the US can kill anyone it wants to, anywhere, and just say "drugs" and it's all fine?
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social)
I don't think there are "epstein files" in the sense that people think, but there is surely a record of rich-guy impunity from members of both parties: insider trading, palm-greasing, sexual misconduct. These things are the foundations of Trump's career: they're the fantasy he sells.
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
But then who will stop the democratic electorate from getting what it wants?

"Why didn't liberalism stop us?" Just the usual framing where only Democrats have agency in American politics
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's explicitly anti catholic, the Catholic Irish. I wrote about this a little in my book. The original irish in the US were mostly protestant They gained status, after the 1840s, by reinventing themselves as "scots-Irish."
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
He's not counting the native Irish, he's counting the ulster scots who came as colonizers under Cromwell. It's actually kind of amazing and yes, it's the language of he KKK, which claimed the heritage of Scottish clans.

It's like Republicans enacting the things they claim to fear and hate the most. 100 yrs of "federalism" and which party is now cheering the invasion of blue cities and the militarization of immigration law?

Our oligarchic media does not want this conversation to take place
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social)
Oligarchy is the number one problem facing the world today. Billionaires don't share the goals or problems of ordinary people and they've bent the media to serve up nonsense in their interests.

5/5 We've replaced “the despotism of fact” with plain old despotism. This is central to Trump’s appeal. As a despot, he’s fact-free, and proud of it.
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
4/4 Now we see a collapse of the authority of expertise. RFK jr has no medical training: just theories from the internet. Duffy, the sec of Transport, has zero experience running anything to do with Transportation. MacMahon, sec. of Ed., has a BA in French but she’s never taught or run a school.
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
3/5 There’s a downside here: it shuts out people with practical experience who can’t afford a degree. Credentialed experts can of course be wrong. Progressive Era experts were often deeply racist, for example. Credentials serve a gatekeeping function, which can stifle good as well as bad ideas.
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social) reply parent
2/5 By @1900 century that had changed. Practicing law or medicine or engineering required professional certification. Jobs in public health and safety required a license: construction required permits and inspections. Professionals weighed evidence objectively and put fact before political favor.
Mike O'Malley (@mikeomalley.bsky.social)
1/5 In the Progressive Era the idea of credentialed expertise took hold. In 1870 the guy building a bridge or sewer system might have practical experience but no degree, or maybe just get the job as a reward for supporting a politician. A dentist might have no medical training at all in 1870.

The leaders of the Center for Contagious Diseases now have no medical credentials at all--non. No experience treating disease, no degrees. Kennedy invented something he calls "mitochondrial challenges" which he can diagnose by looking. It's the "Age of Irrationality"

There is always some element of judging--otherwise what is the point? You can't make an argument of any kind without exercising some level of judgement. There are degrees of judginess and fairness is always a goal, but you have to judge
