an area about 40 miles wide across all of northern England was labeled as "waste" in the Doomsday Book because William didn't leave as much as a house or even tree standing. the "adaptation" after swearing fealty to Charles the Simple was definitely not their universal practice.

in 911, when Hrólfr (Rollo) laid siege to Paris, the language he spoke had little in common with the language brought by his ever-so-great grandson William to England little more than a hundred years later. Kind of remarkable how quickly the assimilation took place.

kind of an odd in medieval history: a germanic tribe conquering the territory of another germanic tribe, as the Normans did with the Franks, was common enough, then adopting the customs & some of the language of the conquered was definitely unusual. Normans certainly didn't do that with the English.
Dmitri (@momus.bsky.social) reply parent
technically not _quite_ french. the normans were more french curious. but still managed to also colonize, among other places, sicily and n. africa, so definitely harbingers for things to come.
