That would be really hard! I could see ways to do it, and maybe even ways to do it that don't come off as Boomercore like season 3 of Picard, but damn, that is not an easy story to assemble

Now I'm thinking about how you'd even construct a Frankenstein story where, like, the doctor is a well-meaning father figure and the monster is just, by his very nature, an awful evil piece of shit.

My theory is that Orson Scott Card's downfall contributed to Heinlein's reevaluation: for years people thought Ender's Game was this difficult, ambiguous work, but when we learned that no, it and its writer are simply conservative, people started looking at Hein's "ambiguous" works with the same eye

I like some Heinlein but I think at this point he's been thoroughly Updiked—his (very real) aesthetic and ethical shortcomings eclipsing anything interesting in his writing, such that "Heinlein" has become a shorthand for all the failures and blind spots of 20th century sci-fi.

I've wondered that for years! It might be SF's link to tech, it might have been the narrower markets (and a roll of the dice that means if you have a guy like Gernsback as a gatekeeper, you're going to get bad work), it might be the unusually long isolation of SF from other genres.

Horror, ditto—Poe, Lovecraft, and Jackson are separated by centuries but the horror classics you'd hear about in the '90s is still terrific. Sci-fi might be closer to "literary fiction" in that it underwent a recent massive reevaluation of what's worth reading and what it's about.

And I'll make my position on this clear: I agree. Huge swaths of the old SF literary canon were trash—at best narrowly interesting, at worst incompetent at almost every level. By contrast, fantasy? Yeah, Tolkien and Howard and other "canon" regulars are pretty great!

Continuing to think about this because I actually never made my point, which is that SF has (to put it politely) significantly reevaluated its canon since I was a kid, to the point that listing the old "must-reads" (Heinlein, van Vogt) would probably get you laughed out of the room now

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process: - data centers pollute our environment - energy use drives up costs - content theft robs creators of income - the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages - using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence - the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

A fun reading list would be everything that got turned into a major piece of D&D IP that isn't explicitly in Appendix N

Obviously most of it was what everyone knows, there was Poul Anderson, there was Heinlein, but a lot of what I read now feels like a hallucination, and that list totally missed New Wave—I've still never read Disch!

When I was twelve, in the early '90s, I used the early Internet (capitalized) to learn the Canon and I walked across the street to the library and read them over a summer, and I wish I could find that list of 20-30 books

Discussion of classic sci-fi (specifically SF not fantasy/horror) is fun because the "canon" I read as a kid was a mix of stuff I still love (Zelazny), stuff I respect (Asimov), stuff that's fallen out of fashion (Hogan), and stuff so incompetent it's basically been forgotten (van Vogt)

Star Wars is still dominant? Are you sure? (looks at the guys hunting Wolverine and they're literally Death Star gunners overseen by Pierre Trudeau) huh okay that's true

Pedal through any Dutch city, and it feels like it’s always been filled with red cycle paths. But the fact is urban cycling infrastructure didn’t exist anywhere until 1975, when a trial project in Tilburg laid the basis of a national standard for legibility, comfort, and status for people on bikes.🧵

People of all ages and abilities ride bicycles along a red asphalt cycling-priority street in Tilburg after dark. The route is lined with two-storey houses, trees and plantings, lighting fixtures, and parked bikes. Probably a reference to Trump's "America's Golden Age begins now" and not something insane in a really interesting way, like an obscure Dominionist cult

there was an old PSA where a kid says like "i thought i would get super powers if i deliberately electrocuted myself on the power lines" and it just made me think i have nothing to worry about. seems like you gotta be a real fuckin idiot to get your arms blown off by electricity

And I suppose the answer is "a recursive obsession with nostalgia, and depraved imperialism masquerading as progressive politics" which is true but not exactly what I'm looking for, I want a gizmo.

Yeah, I'm trying to articulate my idea of how mainstream sci-fi eventually becomes mainstream tech, specifically Star Trek giving us a generation of spaceflight researchers and Star Trek:TNG eventually giving us the iPad, but what has (calculating the time difference) Star Trek: Enterprise given us?
