Alanqa is a very interesting animal, with a slender beak that is 'pinched' at the apex, alongside protrusions that suggest a shellfish-crunching lifestyle. It may also be part of a lineage that led to the giant azhdarchids, and so I reconstructed it as a sort of proto-azhdarch.

And, it shouldn't go unnoted that Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, who has done her job at all hours today over a holiday weekend, was one of the final Biden appointees confirmed to the bench. Each one of those lame-duck confirmations very much matter.

This was incredible, important lawyering from National Immigration Law Center (@nilc.org) over the past 24 hours. Here's their case page: www.nilc.org/litigation/l... Here was the statement from Efrén Olivares, NILC VP of litigation, from earlier today regarding the TRO:

“In the dead of night on a holiday weekend, the Trump administration ripped vulnerable, frightened children from their beds and attempted to return them to danger in Guatemala. We are heartened the Court prevented this injustice from occurring before hundreds of children suffered irreparable harm. We are determined to continue fighting to protect the interest of our plaintiffs and all class members until the effort is enjoined permanently.”

A while ago I did a short series of illustrations showing extinct species coexisting with still living ones in my home country of Brazil, as would have happened around 15-10k years ago. #paleoart #SciArt #artbyjulio

A Notiomastodon, relative of today's elephants, walks through a marsh waving a stick to scare away a group of broad-snouted caiman, while a jabiru stork watches from its perch on a log. A pair of Doedicurus, car-sized heavily armored armadillo relatives, watches as a jaguar passes them by. A red-legged seriema stands on top of one of their shells. A maned wolf stands between a pair of feeding Eremotherium, giant ground sloths, holding one of the wolf-apples (a fruit native to the region) that has fallen due to the sloths' diturbance of the trees. A scenic view of a small lake surrounded by tropical vegetation, representing what Central Brazil would be like 15,000 years ago. Pictured are the extinct species: Smilodon, Notiomastodon, Xenorhinotherium, Eremotherium and the empty shell of a Glyptodon, as well as the still-living species: broad-snouted caiman, jabiru stork, nine-banded armadillo, caracara, and caatinga parakeets.

Screenshot of text: For Daskalakis, the uncertainty is the real danger. If COVID-19 vaccines are not formally recommended at the next advisory meeting, insurers may not cover them. The federal Vaccines for Children program could stall distribution entirely. Meanwhile, life-saving RSV treatments for infants, hailed as a breakthrough last year, are now at risk of being stripped from the agenda. “Children will go to the ICU instead of being home for the holidays,” he said. Daskalakis also warned that when ideology erases science, the results ripple far beyond infectious disease. “The firewall between politics and science is crumbling fast, and the call is coming from inside the house,” he said. Interestingly enough, this animal is really hard to pin down a size for. I've eyeballed a reasonable 5-6-ish metre long size based on comparisons in the literature to Rugops, but some sources do point to a 9m long giant!

Size comparison between Carcharodontosaurus, Deltadromeus, the abelisaurid, and myself.

On my desk for #FossilFriday - these small bones (Northern Leopard Frog) and the spruce cone being removed from a small block of 80,000 year old mud collected during the 1991 Mastodon dig. These have been in a freezer for over 30 years! Will the 80,000 year old spruce cone have viable seeds?

I’ve said it before but reading all the medieval history books I’ve been reading lately has been so comforting. Makes you realize that there have always been mad and incompetent kings and they almost always die in ignominy and everyone piles shit on them for centuries after they’re gone.

They all knew who they were voting for. They all knew RFK Jr. could and likely would be as reckless as he's been, and will likely get way worse.

Hang onto this image of CDC's full list of underlying conditions tied to severe risk of COVID. If you're an adult aged 18-64, RFK Jr. is now making you show some proof of one of these underlying conditions in order to get a COVID vaccine.
