I watched License to Kill yesterday for the first time in ages, and I was surprised that it was less awful than I remember. The opening scenes in Key West were still pretty cringe-worthy though.

The Living Daylights might be my favorite, though at least in part because it was the first Bond movie I was able to see in the theater.

I do think the way out of demand for non-type recasting and silly gadgets is just make it a period piece. Set it during the time period of the books and you get the benefit of Cold War nostalgia.

You want the guy making $60k a year trying to feed his family to rage against the machine and magically fix things beyond his control. I want the politicians who can fix the problem with a snap of their fingers to force change.

Over There (@mostlyoverthere.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, if you don’t understand how hierarchical organizations, government bureaucracies, public sector unions, or law enforcement work, I’m sure that sounds reasonable. Don’t behave badly, file a complaint on those who do, call a reporter - that’s it. That’s the available agency.
Over There (@mostlyoverthere.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, those magic wands they carry are awfully powerful. Patrolmen can't fire anybody. And unions are normally almost always the root of the problem, because they often don't let supervisors fire anyone either.
Over There (@mostlyoverthere.bsky.social) reply parent
Individual cops can't "get rid of" other cops. Often can't just arrest them either. They can report them to their internal affairs or professional responsibility office and peer pressure bad apples. Ultimately, politically appointed leadership & politicians have to draw the line on whats acceptable.
