I watched License to Kill yesterday for the first time in ages, and I was surprised that it was less awful than I remember. The opening scenes in Key West were still pretty cringe-worthy though.
The Living Daylights might be my favorite, though at least in part because it was the first Bond movie I was able to see in the theater.
I do think the way out of demand for non-type recasting and silly gadgets is just make it a period piece. Set it during the time period of the books and you get the benefit of Cold War nostalgia.

Ultimately, politically appointed leadership & politicians have to draw the line on whats acceptable.
