This month, WaderTales will be ten years old. I'm going to create a thread that highlights some of the research findings that have surprised me. Plenty of "Wow!" & "I didn't know that!" moments. Here's a link to the catalogue of 150 blogs wadertales.wordpress.com/about/ #ornithology

It's great to know you enjoy using the NBN Atlas. We currently have 185 data partners who share their data with us registry.nbnatlas.org Whilst we always encourage the sharing of data, we also recognise that some organisations have their own valid reasons for sharing or not sharing.

As a keen naturalist always interested in discovering new species your website is my first port of call to check status and distribution. I’ve always assumed that the various societies involved in biological recording would routinely share data with NBN in order to support science & conservation.

Thinking of the artificiality of chalk streams, water meadows, former wetland levels such as Somerset, coppice woodland, wood pasture, the species favoured, those disfavoured seems to me to be an argument for both conserving these cultural 'habitats' and restoring lost more 'natural' ecosystems.

Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1 December 1901 – 7 February 1979) was a major visual influence on my childhood. House Sparrows feeding on wheat, a story about abundance, about a pest, which became a beloved bird (for many people) which became scarce.

Common Ragwort (biennial plant) a yellow flower, which has Cinnibar moth caterpillars on it which are orange and black striped, they feed on the plant, also Common Blue butterflies on flower visiting for nectar, growing alongside is a thistle, maybe Creeping Thistle a perennial plant spreading by rhizome growth. Beyond is the edge of a wheat crop with Common Poppy growing (an annual plant). A large flock of House Sparrow feeding on and flying into crop giving an impression of large numbers of birds. Beyond a small glimpse of a hedged field system, with perhaps Elm trees once a common sight in the rural landscape, blue sky and clouds complete this bucolic landscape.

Wondrous Minoan artistry from Bronze Age Crete! Small luxury rhyton carved from rock crystal. The artisan who created this vessel some 3,500 years ago, had an eye for beauty as well as immense technical skill! Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 me heraklionmuseum.gr/en/exhibit/r... #Archaeology🏺

My photo shows a small luxury rock crystal rhyton (a ritual vessel for pouring liquid offerings), masterfully carved about 3,500 years ago. About 16 cm tall. Seen from its side profile with handle to the right hand side, the rock crystal vessel has an ovoid body ending in a point. It appears creamy-beige in colour. There is a collar of crystal beads alternated with gilded ivory discs between the body and neck of the vessel. The neck has a splayed rim. A tall, curved handle is formed of fourteen spherical rock crystal beads, which appear a pale greenish colour, threaded onto a bronze wire. Excavated from the Central Sanctuary Complex at the Palace Of Zakros, Crete. Dated 1500-1450 BC.

Exquisite c. 20,000 year-old laurel-leaf point. Expertly worked and aesthetically beautiful, this Solutrean flint tool is 28 cm long, just 1 cm thick, with edges so thin they’re translucent! From Volgu, France. Musée d'Archéologie nationale Saint-Germain-en-Laye 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a flint tool known as a laurel-leaf point due to its symmetrical shape similar to that of a laurel leaf. It was found in a cache of 16 expertly crafted points at Volgu, a site in Rigny-sur-Arroux, Saône-et-Loire, France. Masterfully shaped from a block of pale, translucent flint, the point is 28 cm long and 1 cm thick, with edges so wafer thin they are translucent. It shows no signs of use damage. Dated to the Solutrean period of the Upper Paleolithic. On display Musée d’Archéologie Nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Thirteen of the laurel leaf points from the Volgu cache are part of the collections at the Musée Vivant Denon, Chalon-sur-Saône, France and there is also a Volgu point in the collections at the British Museum.

2/2 Photo of Greenhouse Lane crap same day. Surely the cost of @sheffcouncil.bsky.app deploying crews to clear #FlyTipping is more than that generated charging for waste disposal? A free council service would see the grading, recycling and sale of materials. #NoBrainer @keepbritaintidy.bsky.app

WOW, these baskets are about 9,500 years old! 🤯 Look like they were made yesterday rather than by hunter-gatherers during the Mesolithic! Made of esparto grass, they were found inside the Cueva de Los Murciélagos (Cave of bats), Spain. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows three small baskets woven from esparto grass. They have been radio-carbon dated to the Mesolithic period some 9,500 years ago. Dimensions: Left basket: Height = 10.7 cm; Diameter = 7.2 cm Central basket Height = 9.4 cm, Diameter = 6.5cm Right basket: Height = 13.5 cm; Diameter = 8.6 cm The exceptional preservation of the baskets is due to “The unique conditions for the preservation of organic material in the cave are related to the null humidity resulting from the geological character of the cave. Moreover, a dry wind current is generated by the prevailing climate in the area, and the north-south direction and narrow and deep morphology of the Angosturas gorge channel the wind toward the cave, through the narrow upper entrance. The wind cools as it travels through the cave, increasing in speed; it is cold as it exits through another narrow entrance located in the lower part of the shelter. The lack of prevailing humidity in the area and the circulation of wind in the cave as it cools and dries prevent the proliferation of bacteria, increasing the amount and diversity of preserved perishable material at the site.” Quote from the research article: ‘The earliest basketry in southern Europe: Hunter-gatherer and farmer plant-based technology in Cueva de los Murciélagos (Albuñol)’

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years as a result of a deliberate strategy. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

A key point highlighted in the lecture is the fact that there are millions of potentially useful chemicals in venom; researchers are only scratching the surface with less than 1% of the compounds in question evaluated. Global biodiversity is (amongst many other things) our natural medicine chest.
