Increasingly thinking I should look into expatriating. Not just because everything is on fire but also I'm just very tired and my life has gone mostly nowhere, and a change of situation feels like it would do me good. Go somewhere for a year or two and see what happens, that sort of thing.

The slow start is I think one of the more common criticisms of it. If you played the first game you get some buyin from "oh I know some of these characters" and I think they lean on that to get you invested at the start, but it is definitely not representative of the game as a whole.

I'm not sure what you mean in that sense? Do you just mean lack of access to the larger map or? It does a lot of slow rollout of mechanics but it does slow *everything*, it's a very deliberately-paced game for sure.
I have my criticisms about RDR for sure but it's a testament to the kind of thing Rockstar can do when they actually take their story seriously, and more than anything I've never played a game that let me get lost in the setting more than it.
RDR2 single player is extremely slow, in ways both good and bad, yes. Online is its own separate thing and also doesn't get updated like, ever, because GTA Online makes infinity dollars, but sometimes you just wanna be cowboy and I already finished the offline stuff.
