Just because I saw someone mention it: There’s no reason to think that TPUSA/Kirk had a significant effect on the 2024 election. The turnout operation was non-existent and claims that they/he are the central (or even a major) cause of young voters moving right aren’t backed by any actual evidence.

This map is MAGAs wishful thinking. People may be leaving blue states but they're taking their political affiliations with them, more likely turning once deep red states purple (Georgia, Arizona, N.C.) or in some cases completely blue (Colorado).

This helped me today. Small Kindnesses, by Danusha Laméris

Small Kindnesses by Danusha LamĂ©ris I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you” when someone sneezes, a leftover from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying. And sometimes, when you spill lemons from your grocery bag, someone else will help you pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other. We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot, and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder, and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass. We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange. What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here, have my seat,” “Go ahead—you first,” “I like your hat.”

WTF? I was quoted in this story but I have never spoken to the reporter nor would I have said those things. Is everything just generated by LLMs these days? cosmosmagazine.com/earth/oceans...

To whom it may concern, and it should concern the editor: I was quoted in your publication: https://cosmosmagazine.com/earth/oceans/can-we-engineer-our-way-out-of-ocean-acidification/ Still, others aren't convinced that good intentions are enough. Dr. David Ho, Professor of Oceanography at University of Hawaii at Manoa, a cofounder and the Chief Science Officer of |C|Worthy, a non-profit that works on verifying ocean-based carbon dioxide removal, believes carbon removal efforts like ocean alkalinity enhancement shouldn't be left solely in the hands of private companies.

i am so tired of people wrapping up every useful innovation in coding or machine learning into "AI" as if Anthropic or OpenAI are related to the people who pioneered stuff we universally value.

It's difficult to convey the extent to which the modal administrator's dream university has no faculty. Just admins with fake jobs flying around on expense accounts and students putting cash in a vending machine that prints out a degree after 4 yrs. Ideally the two groups never see each other.

I don’t want to mock basic people. Basic people are also people. But, no one is doing anything amazing with ChatGPT. They basically found some new socks at TJMAXX. It’s an update of sorts but no reason you should remember it.

More natural disasters are hitting the U.S. than ever before. But too often, our crisis warning systems depend on Facebook and Twitter/X, social media platforms that are fading in popularity and have been engineered to hide vital information from people when they need it most. This needs to end:

Their first album was fine. Shiver is a respectable Jeff Buckley homage. Yellow is a perfectly cromulent pop-rock crossover hit. Chris Martin's voice has a nice timbre, and he seems a pleasant frontman sincere in his inclusive tolerance. ...I did it! 100% positive, and not a single lie.

Ex-farm worker here. We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing. Not true AT ALL. Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are. The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour. At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
