Moving to San Francisco was weird because I wasn't familiar with the concept of cruising and in Boston when someone holds eye contact on the street like that it's usually followed with a "what the fuck you looking at?" I must have mean-mugged a lot of friendly guys for the first year or so.
When I was a kid in the 80s Southie, Chelsea and Charlestown were scary and now I couldn't afford to live in any of them. A lot of the fighting was recreational between more or less consensual dudes outside of bars, which is how I imagine England being.
This was a pretty constant threat when I grew up in Boston. I left just as gentrification was really kicking off so I don't know if it's still the case but random groups of white dudes trying to egg you into a fight was very common, at least as a teen.
I only saw the Caitlin Moran Raised by Wolves.
I mean, you can not go on her fucking podcast. That's the bare minimum.

As a teen it was college radio, all-ages shows, listening with friends and browsing record stores. When I moved to S.F. it was live shows, trading tapes with friends and buying interesting stuff by instinct. I used to spend about $100 a week on records, MP3s saved me a fortune but killed my hobby.
It makes sense, those billions of AI people will need podcasts to listen to, I'm just not sure where the revenue is supposed to come from.

It's not that grouping of characters but that's very much the appeal of Will Trent. It really scratched a similar itch I've had for a long time, people resolving misunderstandings in a single episode by talking to each other.

I'm not entirely unsympathetic, I blocked every "Genocide Joe" and red triangle asshole on Twitter, but personally I didn't see Uncommitted as being that. I thought of it as a message from loyal Democrats to do something that was both morally right and would help him win.
I voted for Harris and I would have voted for Biden happily, my casting a secret protest vote *in a settled primary* wasn't the straw that broke some Stein-voting moron's back. That was the daily parade of atrocities that only Biden had any power to stop, or at least show any interest in doing so.
But this is all part of an argument to vote against the Dem in NYC. The other nominal Dems are corrupt pieces of shit who lost the primary. If you'd met all the eager young folks out canvassing for Mamdani here you'd be excited too. This is the way forward, decent people who love their neighbors.
The last time the NY presidential primary was contested was in 2008. I've voted for the Democrat in every election since 1988. I've supported human rights for Palestinians longer than that. The truth is Harris did well and lost a close race, trying to find small groups to blame is just idiotic.
The primary was settled and I voted Harris in the general. I was nervous about Biden dropping out but I thought Harris was better, as I did in 2020. My NY primary vote had no effect on the November election and I think it's insane to think that it did.
Primaries never matter in New York so it was purely a symbolic gesture meant to pressure the president. He was in a tough spot, he needed to show support for Israel's security while keeping them on a leash, despite Bibi wanting him to lose. That he failed to do so is not the fault of protesters.
I voted Uncommitted in the primary to send a signal to Biden that Democratic voters wanted him to stop supporting the genocide in Gaza. I expected Biden to be the nominee and of course there was no question that I would vote for him in Nov. I also know that the nomination happens at the convention.
But thinking about how you split "literary" fiction into subgenres and topics is mind-boggling. Do Wendell Berry and Halldór Laxness go together because they write about family farms? Are Good Morning Midnight and Jernigan in the alcoholic section or is the latter in the English professor genre?
From the author's perspective I was thinking of Jonathan Lethem, who used to have his books spread between SF, mystery and fiction but I wonder if after Fortress of Solitude he has all his books together in fiction. I will usually read more of an author I like, I found him because he was near Lem.

Do you think it's better to have your books shelved together or spread out among sections? I can see benefits for both, which I suppose change throughout one's career. I don't see much use for genre other than to organize a store, but fandom is such a huge driver of sales that it seems mandatory.
It's a good follow-up to the debut of Abba covers. It crosses over from Eurodance to regular pop pretty well. Contrast the second Caramell album which is a bit weaker than their debut, although Caramelldansen would become a meme when the fast versions were released much later.

Damn, I've only actually listened to one of those in full. I was still listening to new music then, and a few faves came out I discovered later, but I was already way out of the loop. IDM was wrecked by glitch, 90s garage rock was dying as 00s was coming in and none of my indie pop faves made a dent

I think it's 90% that that age group is consistently the most conservative, but on cultural stuff, that sounds right. But also Andrew Dice Clay was effectively canceled after SNL and Sam Kinison was my first "rest in piss" celebrity death. His HBO special really turned me against that kind of humor.

I'd been listening to This American Life for 20 years before it was a podcast. In general 99% of the podcasts I've ever enjoyed have been of the format comedian or two has guests, sometimes with some contrived theme. I don't miss the big branded stuff, not that you're wrong to.
I think it could if it had a comparable fandom. Lots of romcom-adjacent movies and classics that "transcend" the genre. But it's not discussed much at all.

Although teen bands doing R&B covers predates the British invasion. Louie Louie was a hit pre-Meet The Beatles. No doubt though, once the Yardbirds were on the scene they were a huge influence on the mid-60s bands.
I watched that last night. I had watched Sexy Beast a couple weeks ago and it was not what I expected, only realized when Stamp passed I'd conflated the two movies. But both really defy any expectation. I'm glad I'd seen Poor Cow a million years ago.

If the next primary came down to Walz vs. AOC, and AOC won, would you expect Walz voters to accept the "lesser evil" or should they vote third-party? You're not always going to get perfect choices and politics requires you to do a tiny bit of thinking about outcomes.
I found the idea of smart decent people who were in politics for the right reasons very compelling. A huge step in the right direction is miles away from a lesser-evil scenario. Also the whole MAGA was clearly going to enact fascism thing, that turned out to be important.

I like Howard Johnson's because they took fried clams and New England-style hot dog buns national but I also remember them as having incredibly slow service, which is not ideal for a highway restaurant.

I used to go to the Chinese theaters in San Francisco regularly. They always had double features and the second film was usually a surprise, so many odd movies that I can't identify now. Great period, it'll be nice to revisit with legible subtitles.
The conflation of nerddom and fandom bugs me. The correlation is real and old but nerds are more socially acceptable because it now means people who like "nerdy" things. And also because we understand the autism spectrum better, which is great, but tangential to the popularity of Marvel.
