Why are they worried? If it was okay for her to be a Bishop (which it clearly is) why would it be a problem if Cherry's an Archbishop?

Tricky but not insurmountable - there are already planning rules with a geographical limit, e.g. 'affordable' housing must go to 'local' workers (within or close to the county). Extend the idea to house purchase. I think Jersey also has tight rules on who can buy.

Interesting to compare with the very limited measures being adopted in Cymru to tackle the same problem, basically an option to triple council tax on holiday homes (excludes genuine commercial lets which support local economy), and restrict 'change of use' to a holiday home.

How about, & this is just a wild, off-the-top-of-my-head crazy idea...how about the UK Government introduce 'sanctions' against Russia? You know, seal off all contact, movement & trade with Russia? Freeze the assets of all Russian citizens, & deport them (unless they claim asylum). Oh, & Israel too

There are none, sadly. Because the US is a big, heavily armed, bully that ignores international law, and no other country is willing to call them out or bring them to justice for their criminal behaviour. Even the 'good' ones are pretty bad (Biden/genocide in Gaza etc)

Key question: what are the 'Labour' government hoping/planning to do that would be blocked by the ECHR? Which of our rights do they want to abolish? Particularly odd as the way that e.g. Article 8 (right to privacy & family life) is written the para 2 exemptions let govt do what they want anyway

Text of Article 8 of the ECHR. Article 8: Right to privacy 1. Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence. 2. There shall be no interference by a public authority with the exercise of this right except such as is in accordance with the law and is necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security, public safety or the economic well-being of the country, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.

Exactly. It's a tool, to be used by people. One of my favourite non-genAI use cases is OCR. AI-based tools are much better at AI than 'traditional' OCR, particularly with degraded images (or even some handwriting). But they still make mistakes, so a human should proof read the output.

I'm sure the overall markets are madness. If the 50% tariff is on the price of the imported beans, then that translates to several dollars/lb on the beans, but shouldn't mean 50% extra on the roasted product on the shelf. Raw materials, it should be maybe +15c/cup on a Starbucks. Bet it's more!

Very interesting, and will obviously have a large price impact on someone buying a pound of roasted Brazilian beans for home use. But the cost of the actual coffee beans is a tiny fraction of the price of a cup of coffee in a coffee shop - even a 50% tariff only adds a few cents to the price.

And going off at a slight tangent, while we're in historical mode and talking about 'Curry', even if it's not from East Anglia. This from the Limerick Chronicle in 1809

About seven o'clock in the evening of Tues- day last, five fellows some of them armed with pistols, entered the dwelling house of --- Curry of Kilcoolen, in this County, very close to the Liberties of this City, whom they robbed of two Guineas and a piece of musket? they then went to the house of his brother, who lives on the same land, and the doors being open entered therein and demand- ed his money, Curry took a large bludgeon from one of them, and made such effectual use of it, that he succeeded in beating four of the fellows out, and shut the door against them; the fifth he kept in the house, and the fellow having presented a pistol at Curry, the latter seized it, wrested it from him, and struck him so severe a blow on the head with the but end of it, as to break it. The fellows outside fearing to burst open the door fired a shot in demanding their companion, whom Curry refused to liberate; they then sent one of their comrades for some fire to burn his house, and they actually had the fire to the thatch before Curry let the villain go, and even then made him get out of a small window, and when he opened the door the villains would again enter the house. We may well advise that had Curry fire arms, he would have rid that vicinity of some of the villains who have committed so many recent robberies.

"the soul travels at the speed of a trotting camel" How long until 'home' changes to be the other end of the journey? I moved a lot as a child (14 times!) but never lived in Cymru. Mam was from Glamorgan, though, and it was strange that I always thought of Cymru as 'home'. 33 years here now!

I have a flagpole in my garden. For some time past it has been flying the flag of Palestine. Prior to that it's had Y Ddraig Goch, 'Yes Cymru', Ukraine and Yes Scotland. The Palestinian flag needs replacing as the weather has taken a toll.

A big plus with Flamingo is that (by utilising 'unconventional' launch sites) they can reach virtually every inch of Russia, including all those factories a long way from UKR, & which aren't well defended as a result. How much can Russia afford on defending EVERY factory, port, airfield & rail line?

Entirely deliberate. Entirely preventable. Entirely illegal. What will it take for the UK Labour Government to end all arms sales to Israel and to impose sanctions? Why won’t the Welsh Labour Government call on them to do so?
