Picture from my home: Lagoa do Canário / Sete Cidades. The name of the little lake derives from the fact, that its shape reminds a little bit of a canary bird #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The viewer looks out onto a mirror-smooth surface of water reflecting the sky and clouds. Shrubs with green and red leaves grow from the sides of the water. Japanese cedars frame the small lake in the background.

Picture from my home: Volcanic rocks in the ocean at low tide. Mosteiros - west coast. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The image shows volcanic rocks forming sheltered shallow basins in the blue-turquoise Atlantic Ocean. The sea is calm, and you can see from the discolouration of the rocks that it is low tide. At the top right of the image, a section of the western cliff coastline protrudes into the picture. In addition, the sun is shining brightly.

The viewer looks out over two hills shaped like flat pyramids. They are covered with grass. On the hill on the right, you can also see dirt roads separating pastures and a few bushes. In the middle, between the hills, and on the flank of the left hill, there is a large number of black and white dairy cows. In the foreground on the right is a grove of endemic tree heath (Erica azorica). In the sky, dense white clouds surround a blue hole.

The viewer looks down from above into a smaller, almost round crater lake containing greenish water, as well as into a very large crater lake with blue water, on the shore of which there is a village. The crater walls are all lushly covered with Japanese cedar and endemic tree heath, while the flat areas are mostly pastures. All this is bathed in bright sunshine, with white clouds drifting into the picture from the left at the viewer's level, which is typical for this lookout point. In the back, behind the ridge, the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Picture from my home: Viewpoint Ponta do Sossego, late September. Could be a cover image for the very popular Azorean song 'Ilhas da Bruma' (Islands in the Mist). #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The picture shows a small part of the high, steep east coast from an elevated viewing platform. In the foreground is a landscaped park with hydrangeas that have already bloomed profusely, a false-cypress, other trees, bushes and neatly trimmed azalea hedges. Further back are two high rocky outcrops that are completely overgrown. The coast and the strip of ocean that is visible disappear into the haze after a few hundred metres.

The image shows a rock face on the right with a few tufts of grass growing on it. On the left is a sky covered with white clouds and a bit of the ocean. In the middle is a bat in flight. At the top, you can see part of the roof of a picnic pavilion, which can be found all over the island.

The image shows a view of the red and white striped beacon at Ponta da Ajuda, which stands on a striking rocky outcrop. Long grass in the foreground, as is more commonly seen on islands further north. The blue Atlantic Ocean appears calm, with a slight swell. A wave at least 5 metres high is breaking in a slight headwind, blowing the spray away from the viewer. The sky is blue, almost cloudless.

Picture from my home: The raised bog 'Planalto dos Graminhais' on the ridge of the eastern mountain range at an altitude of almost 900 metres above sea level. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The picture shows a raised bog with many small pools, grasses, mosses, flowers and small shrubs. Thousands of frogs and many butterflies live here, among other creatures. The whole area is like a giant sponge, providing sufficient water for the many small streams that flow into the sea on both sides. A narrow, paved path leads through the Planalto dos Graminhais, because the actual raised bog is not solid ground that can be walked on.

Picture from my home: The 'Moinho do Felix' (Felix's mill). The watermill ruin which gave the name to the three-waterfall hiking trail which passes my house. See 'ALT' for more information. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The image shows the ruin of a relatively small natural stone building, inside which lies a horizontal millstone. Around the building, in the foreground, there is a hiking trail with railings and an information board. To the left of the ruin, a path leads down to a small river and a wooden viewing platform located between the trunks of large plane trees. From there, you can get a good view of the “Cascata do Teófilo” waterfall (not visible in the picture). To the right of the mill, you can see the open water pipe made of natural stone, which ends a few metres above the millstone. The kinetic energy of this steep slope was formerly used to drive the stone. Almost exclusively corn was ground, as the climate of the Azores is too humid for e.g. wheat.

The image shows a wet rock face completely covered in moss, with a relatively small, dark opening from which a narrow stream flows out. Apart from the rock face, there are lots of trees, bushes, shrubs and other plants. In the lower part of the image, you can see the invasive Azores pest, also known as ginger lily, in full bloom.

The picture shows a plane tree from which all the smaller branches have been removed. In the background is a gently sloping landscape of pastures and fields and a few houses. The tree is located in Fenais da Ajuda. The fields behind it belong to my home village of Lomba de São Pedro. The village on the right above is already the next parish, Salga. In the centre is the parish after that, Achadinha. In the background you can see a part of the massif of the island's highest mountain, Pico da Vara (1'103 m). A nice blue sky with a few white clouds. On the left the deep blue Atlantic Ocean.

Picture from my home: Both pictures were taken at the viewpoint Salto do Cavalo (horse leap). Looking down to Povoação valley and to Furnas valley. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The viewer looks across a mountain ridge densely covered with endemic tree heath (Erica azorica) into a sunlit valley bordered by wooded mountains in the background and the Atlantic Ocean on the right. The valley consists almost exclusively of pastures and a few long, narrow villages, known as ‘lombas’. Further out on the open sea are dense white clouds reflected in the blue Atlantic. The viewer looks down into a valley surrounded on all sides by wooded mountains, which contains the village of Furnas and the slightly higher Furnas Lake. On the left is an opening to a gorge that leads to Ribeira Quente (hot stream), where you can see a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. On the right are slightly darker clouds, typical of São Miguel at this location, which are facing the sun. In the foreground, at the bottom, you can see the endemic Azores laurel, which is one of the rare non-poisonous laurel species.

Picture from my home: The eastern central highlands of São Miguel. View from Lake São Brás to the highest peak on the island, Pico da Vara (1,103 m). #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The picture shows a gently rolling landscape consisting of a patchwork of coniferous forests (Japanese Cedars) and pastures, at the end of which rises a low mountain range with a striking peak. In the foreground, a few dairy cows graze. The sky is blue with a few high, harmless white clouds. The scene is reminiscent of the Allgäu Alpine foothills (southern Germany, roughly halfway between Lake Constance and Oberammergau), even though the island is located amid the Atlantic Ocean.

The picture shows a pasture on which some black and white young cows of the Friesian Holstein breed are grazing. The pasture is framed by giant reeds. In the background is a large white property with red roofs, a former farmhouse that has been renovated. Behind it, the Atlantic Ocean and a loose strip of cloud in the evening sunlight.

The viewer looks down a slope to the Atlantic Ocean and a black beach, which is very narrow due to the high tide. The water is fairly calm for the time of year (April), just a little choppy. No high swell and no white whitecaps. In the foreground there are some ruins of small water mills built of natural stone and overgrown with grass. The entrance to the uppermost hut was walled up with concrete bricks years ago.

Picture from my home: The Caldeiras at Lake Furnas without(!) other people in the pic. See ALT for further information and some gossip. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The picture shows a large area with several bubbling, boiling, brownish-cloudy pools from which steam is rising. The ground is coloured yellow by sulphur and some algae and lichen can be seen. A wooden footbridge for tourists runs through the centre of the area. Outside the area, however, you can already see the lush vegetation of the Azores again. It smells a bit musty here (and also in parts of the village of Furnas), like sulphur and iron. You soon get used to it and after a few minutes you no longer notice it. Fun fact: Not shown in the picture, but also at this location, are holes in the ground from which hot steam rises. This is where the traditional Portuguese stew ‘Cozido’ is prepared by placing a stuffed, well-sealed pot inside for about 8 hours and sealing the hole with a wooden lid and sand. The viewer looks into a wide high valley, which is open to the right towards the deep blue sea. Behind and to the left, it is lined with mountains covered in dark green Japanese cedars. The valley consists mainly of light green pastures. The sky is bright blue in many parts, with only a few loose, low-hanging clouds against the mountains. On the left you can see a small piece of a rainbow. Apparently very fine drizzle is falling from this cloud. Some narrow, elongated villages stretch out on elevations between several streams. These are named ‘Lomba’ in the Azores, which roughly translates as ridge or hill. ‘Lombas’ do not have an access to the sea that would be suitable for a boat.

The viewer looks down into a small valley that ends at the probably highest waterfall in São Miguel, in which, however, very little water flows almost all the time. Only immediately after and during heavy rainfall does the stream have surprisingly large amounts of water. Above the waterfall, a narrow, tree-covered gorge leads further uphill. In the valley, which is laid out in terraces and overgrown with grass, there are some permanently installed concrete tables and benches covered by a kind of wooden pavilion. Anyone sitting in one of these pavilions is well protected from the sun and rain and can now see either the waterfall or the ocean.

The picture shows a small peninsula in the deep blue sea from above. It is obviously of volcanic origin and is not yet old. The rock is black and reddish in colour, so it probably contains iron. In contrast to the rest of São Miguel, there is hardly any vegetation and you can clearly recognise a volcanic crater. There is a white building on the peninsula that is a thermal bath centre and café. A long path leads to the left past changing rooms and ends, which you can't see in the picture, at the bay mentioned in the main text, which is fed on one side by a thermal spring that ensures water temperatures well above 30°C at low tide. In the foreground you can see the slope that leads down to the peninsula, which is mainly covered with the tree heath (Erica azorica) known here as Urze.

The image shows a very unusually shaped lenticular cloud hovering very low over an estate that looks a little neglected. The shape is strongly reminiscent of some designs of spaceships of extraterrestrial species from various Star Trek TV series. On the right, large plane trees without leaves, so this must have been taken in winter. Incidentally, plane trees are almost the only trees on São Miguel that shed their leaves in winter. They were planted in large numbers in the 1950s as avenue trees. Presumably to provide shade for the horse-drawn carts in summer. It is even more likely that they were planted because that was the way things had to be done in then-fascist Portugal.

Pictures from my home: A view from the estuary of the stream Ribeira do Calhau (overall length 30 m) to the east side of Maia. #Açores #Azores #Azoren #SãoMiguel #photography #landscape #landscapephotography

The picture shows a little cascading area of water in the foreground, set oval in natural stone, with some aquatic plants growing in the middle. On the right is the Atlantic Ocean, which meets a coastline of boulders. In the background you can see the picturesque eastern side of the village of Maia, which is perched on rocky cliffs about 30 m high and where there is also a small, sheltered bay with a sandy beach.

This is a picture of the president of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in May 2020. No fake! That's greatness.
