Almost every political idea is believed by some crackpot in almost every country at almost every time. The existence of the idea isn't interesting. Even people attempting to spread the idea isn't interesting. The ground upon which it spreads fast is. Ideas spread exponentially.

Science is about what is true and what is not. And whenever what is true causes someone with power harm, it becomes political. The fascist "truth matters less than power" is opposed to uncontrolled science.

You care about the force needed to maintain your speed; from that, the power, and from that the energy needed for a distance. It ends up being proportional to d v^2 energy at reasonably high speeds.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Power ~ v^3, distance = v t, energy = power t, so energy ~ v^3 t = v^3 t distancr / t = v^2 distsnce This is at high velocities; at low velocities it ends up being energy ~ v distance instead, as the air resistance changes equations as you go faster.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Quadratic drag, but cubic engine power (energy is force times distance; power is energy over time, and distance per time grows with velocity).

notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
I am just trying to say that LLMs are doing more than just spewing words in the general subject area. It is possible for words to be attached to meanings, and some crude "reasoning" occur, especially when the input text deals with that problem. But the reversi skills of the LLMs still suck.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
"Believe" seems extremely strong for something almost certainly false? "Suspect", "have a pet idea", "fancy" seem better. Because if you believe any prehistory stories that aren't extremely vague in detail, I have a bridge to sell you; we lack sufficient evidence of any details of that stuff.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Humans can generate better BS if they really understand the problem, and can put their reputation on the line to cover the cracks. LLMs spew BS without reputational claims and regardless of deeper understanding and model correctness. And they'll keep spewing if you poke them forever.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, I know: LLM AI is a nuclear powered bullshit generator. Lots of human society runs on bullshit. In fact, when selling deep analysis of a problem to "decision makers" you produce bullshit to guide them (eliding over complexities to make a convincing case). Good BS sells the correct answer.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
MAWA is the game and always has been
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
This means it isn't just "writing recersi-game type text": the moves are usually legal moves. You can even give it illegal board state (not in training data) and it responds "sensibly". Now for something as complex as bylaws it may be reduced to spewing bullshit: but that is not guaranteed.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
You went too far. We can extract state vectors that correspond to an abstraction of the problem from the internal state of the LLM. Like, a LLM is playing reversi, you can examine its internal state and print out a pretty reliable board. This internal state was built from language training.

notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Instead of faithfully noting the byte stream frequencies, it would say "could I shave off some storage by getting it close?". Then the reconstructed output would diverge from the input and the model would shrink sharply. LLM are large Markov chains that lossily compress the internet.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
This is true, but it is also true the LZW compression generates a mathematical model of byte sequences based on their probability of occurrence within the input stream, notes this down, and these notes can then be used to reconstruct the stream in toto flawlessly. I used to joke about lossy LZW.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
I hope Peter Watts is wrong about consciousness, but LLMs sure made one plot in Blindsight go from SF to reality.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
The basic design of LLVM is a lossy compression of the internet. Input and previous output tokens produces a probability distribution of the next output token, mimicing training data. Then "spice" is added to fix errors; like the LLM talks to itself first. What did I miss?

notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent

notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Did you stop it? Are you still breathing? Then you let it happen. It is a democracy - rule by the people. You are responsible for what your country does, even if none of you act like you are. That lack - the fact you consider yourself without blame - is why your democracy is failing.

notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
You are responsible for the results of your elections. If you voted for, against, 3rd party, or didn't vote at all, if you campaigned or stayed silent. As a member of a democracy, the election results are your responsibility and your fault. Powerless? Too bad. Every last American is to blame.

Getting a few dozen nukes is easy; weeks or months. Upgrading to MAD is a longer term project and could take a decade and would be harder to do covertly. But Canada is a compliant NPT member, so has no public nuclear weapons program.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
Canada is a compliant NPT member. Canada produces the majority of the worlds civilian tritium, the explosive in hbombs. Civilian means it has a label saying "not for weapons" on it. CANDU reactors produce too much plutonium to export them safely. And Canada is building a spaceport.
notayakk.bsky.social (@notayakk.bsky.social) reply parent
