Just want to point out that was some extremely good teamwork by the ref crew there. Ball popped up and hit the Austin attacker in the hand, but Maruffoâs view was screened. 4th official had a clear view and let him know on the comms system.

a lot of the stuff on the PK was just shithousery to try and ice the kicker, IMO. Get a couple of guys in the ref's face so that way someone else can go get in the kicker's face. CR7 handled it perfectly, stepping up and pretending to be the guy, while Alex went over and just waited patiently.

Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social) reply parent
and instead it's resolved in about two minutes in a chat with pops. Anyway. Yeah, not crazy about it. I wasn't a huge fan of the Snyderverse, for that matter, but at least it kind of kept that broody darker tone and wasn't cluttered with a zillion "metahumans" with zilch for background.
Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social) reply parent
approach (like in Guardians) doesn't work with Superman. Superman is just too damn earnest and do-goody-two-shoes, and if you're going to try and set up this big internal "who am I, really?" conflict, the way they did it just doesn't work. It needs to be central to the story...
Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social) reply parent
The sidekicks are okay (I did NOT have Mr Terrific being the best character in the movie beforehand!) but all in all... nah, it just doesn't work that well for me. I also fear greatly what Batman will be in this universe/version. It's weird, because I'm a big big Gunn fan, but his lighthearted...
Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social) reply parent
or more correctly, the central conflict that they set up is treated so lightly and like a side plot point that we don't really feel any emotional connection to seeing Superman resolve it. The tone is off, too. Is it jokey? (it's Gunn, of course it's jokey) but is it supposed to be? Serious?
Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social)
Just finished "Superman" and it's... meh. It's not BAD and it's not GREAT. I think the biggest problem for me is that there's zilch for origin story; I get why Gunn did it (everyone kind of knows Superman's story, I guess) but it just drops us into his life now. There's no central conflict...
Paul Cox (@paulcox.bsky.social) reply parent
