When your “bike infrastructure” allows a driver to kill people in the bike lane without risking their own life in return, that is not “bike infrastructure”, that’s window dressing. Also, were these things not bolted down?
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
The ONLY reason biking works for transportation for me in Seattle is I’m okay being a bit of an adrenaline junkie, and riding vehicularly and assertively. I would not ride that with a child, let alone with a child on my bike, and it would be a different calculation whether I’d ride at all.
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
My experience biking on rural roads (mostly on the Peninsula) is they are worse. Most routes there is no option but a high speed rural road/hwy with no shoulder. Now small cities like Bellingham are different! I’ve not biked in Bellingham, but walking around, yeah, I can imagine it’s far better.
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
All your points about how bad cycling in Seattle is are dead on. A good test of how “bike friendly” a city is whether if a non-cyclist child or elderly person told you they were going to bike to the park or the grocery store, would you be worried? In Seattle the answer is almost universally yes.
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah except on rural roads people drive even faster and more recklessly 😔 Less overall vehicles, but each one is more likely to kill you.

To be sympathetic to those who take comfort in the past: yes, a lot of things are worse now. Cost of living being the most obvious and direct, climate change being the most existential, and the shift away from democracy and into authoritarianism being the most worrying. But all of that is fixable.

True on the retractable bollards, which will never happen with a substantial cultural shift at SDOT. It wouldn’t stop it entirely, but yeah, islands in the middle of 2nd-4th with signs, curb bumps, and bollards would cut down on illegal turns. The current system is the usual asking nicely.
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
The good news is that it would be easy to mitigate the bad design by adding traffic lights at every intersection, with bike lights indicating they can go both ways, more signage, and some curbs and bollards to prevent drivers from doing their usual illegal whatever they want.
Paulrus of West Bumblefrick (@paulrusof.bsky.social) reply parent
I continue to insist @seattledot.bsky.social utterly dropped the ball when they redid Bell. It was so much better as just a 2-way city street with lights at every intersection. It has constant wrong-way and illegally turning drivers, and the non-existent signage that the bikeway is 2-way.
