This column tries to draw a distinction without a difference. "Cyclists have a right to bike lanes" and "Cyclists have right not to be harmed by the removal of bike lanes" is functionally the same thing. (Also, even if induced demand means commute time remains constant,traffic flow still increases.)

Yes I agree that what someone intended can be vague. But it can also be vague what someone meant! If the vagueness of intention is systematically matched by a vagueness of meaning, doesn't that tell us that our analysis is on the right track?

Doesn't this example show why intention is important in the analysis of meaning? If you sighed without realizing that doing so would tell your friend that you are having a bad day (so you didn't intend for him to know it), that is something your friend learned, but it isn't something you meant.

I don't think we should group together "people condemning wokeness" as if they all had the same attitudes. Some of these people were problematic. But others were genuine liberals pointing out real problems of intolerance and censorship on the left.

I know the concept, but I am skeptical that it constitutes a genuine category that separates it from "normal" choices. It is a concept that is notoriouly hard to define analytically. Some paths are more uncertain than others, but it seems to me that this is a difference of degree, not of kind.

Can't say I have seen a major change under Trump in how inflation is covered by the media, but maybe that's just me. I would point out that your graph show declining coverage of inflation by the media in the last year of Biden's presidency.

Been a while since I thought about these issues but my recollection is that Savage's theory is fine for modeling purposes while Jeffrey's is conceptually cleaner since it treats acts, states and outcomes as propositions.
