It really is stunning how quickly and completely the US has pissed away not only it’s leadership but even its ability to participate and directly observe critical geopolitical events. The world is moving on quickly while the US circles the drain. Hats off to the enlightened electorate there. Bravo.
I am simply in awe of the sheer talent on display here. An absolute virtuoso and one of the best releases of the year so far.

For about 5 years, between 1996 and 2000, Tortoise and most specifically John McEntire made magic. A three album run that (to me) rivals any other, while producing a couple of seminal Stereolab albums on the side. Of all of that, this is the best. And perfect for this bright Sunday morning.
So I’m a slave to Sangiovese but it’s quite difficult to find a decent Chianti or other here in Mexico without breaking the bank. It’s forced me to dig more deeply into Chilean wines, Carmenieres and Cabernets in particular, and I am very thankful for that.

So I’m one of those album people. I never sorted playlists, apart from one - a list called ‘Good’ that has 7,000 odd songs I like in no discernible order. My magnum opus I guess. I just heard this album today and I’m not sure about it yet, but the first three cuts were auto adds (and I’m fussy).

It’s not the last we’ll hear of this sort of thing. We’re simply not ready as a species for what we are unleashing. The abyss is approaching and we’re hitting the gas. We devalued, even mocked philosophy as a meaningful pursuit and we are going to pay the price.
The textures on this one never fail to blow me away. So rich and layered. Just a wonderful listen each time I rediscover it. Happiness indeed.
I hadn’t thought of it from the sociopolitical perspective but you’re right. It’s not my absolute favourite either (Confield I think), but it was so unexpectedly perfect for the moment.
As a crazed fan for decades, I would have laughed at the start of 2020 if I’d have been told that Autechre would provide the calm and warming counterpoint to the angst of the pandemic, but here we have it Their most delicate and beautiful recording. This is a desert island one for me.

The follow up to the (sublime) Sign, Plus appeared less than two weeks later and sort of got lost in the shuffle. It’s a more energetic and anxious listen, but super compelling all the same. ecol4 and X4 are the twin centrepieces here. Hopefully this one isn’t the last studio effort.
This came out a while ago and if I am to be honest never really clicked with me after a few listens. I threw it on for the run this morning on a cold and rainy day and that seemed to help. Still, can’t say anything really grabs me on this one.
It’s our 10th wedding anniversary today and we’re in a beautiful place in every sense of the word. I listened to this for the first time on our honeymoon and it became the soundtrack to our early days. I love those memories and all of the ones we’ve built together since.
One of those days where I’m feeling like there isn’t much to say. Not a bad thing, just introspective I guess. Labradford has always been perfect company on those kinds of days. This one, their last, is one of their best.
Sometimes there isn’t a personal, meaningful, therapeutic, deep need for a specific piece of music to listen to. Sometimes you’re just looking for a fucking banger. This one fits nicely.
OCD nerd alert. I’ve kept a running list of my favourite albums since 1983. At least 4 or 5 each year, some many more. 2024 was the year with the longest list @ 18. This was at the top, with Chrome Dome being my favourite song of my favourite album of my favourite year I guess. So good.
Low is a band I’ll have a lot to say about in this space. They have been meaningful and important for me throughout my adult life. I cannot imagine the depths Alan has had to navigate following Mimi’s passing. This is a simply remarkable statement from a true inspiration.
Going back a bit this morning. When I first heard this, it felt difficult and jittery. Over time it revealed itself as a mournful reflection on loss, and the uncertain and terrifying and ultimately hopeful days to follow. At least that’s what it meant to me. And does still it seems.
I’ve been listening to a lot more jazz as I transition into my old man music years. This one has definitely been a gateway drug, if you’re allowed more than one of those? Bonus today that I listened to I with headphones for the first time. Super rich and textured.
Bonus winetime content. Closing out a bottle of Chilean Cabernet to this mesmerizing soundscape. I’ve been enjoying quite a lot of what International Anthem has been releasing over the last couple of years. This one in particular is special. Simply fucking brilliant ambience.
Yeah, I’m a Radiohead guy. And if I’m to keep this endeavour about what I’m actually listening to versus what I want to project, then we’ll see a lot of these guys here. This one is a very nice surprise. I’m not one prone to jealousy, but for ‘There There’, I wish badly that I could have been…there.
Music As Therapy day. Manufactured unhappiness is the worst. I needed a balm this morning, and this was it. Beautiful from start to finish. One of the very best this year so far.
Beth Gibbons’ album received a ton of attention last year, and rightfully so as it’s gorgeous and affecting. Mr. Barrows’ work here didn’t really get the same, which is curious to me. It was easily one of my top 2 or 3 favourites last year. And good energy for the run under sunny skies.
First ever treadmill run this morning, which was interesting. A bit less satisfyingly organic though. Thankfully the accompaniment was able to provide that. Discovered this one way too late, but happy I have.
Sunny and warm(er) this morning, so something a little brighter. Probably my favourite from McEntire in quite some time as I look forward, hopefully, to new Tortoise material this year.
The perfect companion for today’s morning run under cool and hazy conditions. The clouds were reaching down and Faith was ready to return the embrace. Delightful.
Morning vibe: my personal favourite from The Groop. Three Dee Melodie demands attention (and volume) from the start and it only gets better from there. Perfection really.

This has me thinking now about the brilliant run Too Pure was on in the early to mid 90s. In addition to Seefeel and The Lab, seminal stuff from PJ Harvey, Mouse on Mars, Moonshake/Laika among others. Absolute excellence.
Incredible how this really ties everything they have done over decades together without feeling forced or unnatural. Similar in that way to the (also surprising) Seefeel releases last year. Just excellent stuff from musicians who have fully mastered their sound and craft.

As a lot of you are expressing too, this place reminds me of the old ass Internet I used to love. I spent my life building this shit, hoping it was for the common good but (if I am to be honest) knowing it ultimately wasn’t. I’m hoping this will turn out different - if feels like it will.
