In recent years I have received more manuscripts apparently written by a student without passing through a senior collaborator; just full of mistakes, poorly cited, not ready for review. Conveying the appropriate ire to the PI who earned it w/o being a bastard to the student author is challenging.
For the sake of my petty, judgemental soul, I 1) crucify authors for revealing consequential ignorance of their own literature, and 2) delight in strafing invalid logical inferences and hand-waving cliches
For the sake of science, I 1) Focus my comments on what would make the submitted paper better, rather than on what experiments I wish they did (except in dire cases), and 2) Point out places of likely confusion for other readers w/ suggested clarifications
Same here, and it is *very often* the case that authors make interpretive claims that are not justified by the data they've reported, or at least need significantly more dot-connecting to get there.
