I planted extra parsley in the herb garden in hopes that it would attract Black Swallowtail butterflies - it worked! What beautiful babies they make! Happy #LaborDay 🇺🇸 #SaveButterflies 🦋

Yes! They love the nectar but will only lay eggs on milkweed. The only thing the caterpillars can eat

It’s sad that it is exciting - was so unexpected. Last year I was fortunate to see the female laying eggs on my milkweed. Still - for the 12 eggs I saw her lay - I recovered 3 caterpillars. Came back from vacation and knew that at least one Monarch had been in my garden 🧡
Micki (@pollinatorsfirst.bsky.social)
An increasingly rare sight in America - please, consider not only planting milkweed but flowers with nectar.Impatiens and mophead hydrangeas are beautiful but they have NOTHING to offer pollinators. No nectar, no pollen. When I was a child (I’m 67) butterflies were common. 🦋 @annealiz1.bsky.social

You are blessed to have Monarchs - we used to in the mid-Atlantic (Washington DC area) / now every one is a gift
Micki (@pollinatorsfirst.bsky.social) reply parent
This is so incredibly lovely!
Micki (@pollinatorsfirst.bsky.social)
Found this lone Monarch caterpillar in my milkweed patch and moved him/her to a mesh butterfly cage for safety. We have few Monarchs in this area, and most of the caterpillars in my garden are taken by predators if I don’t get to them first. Will release after metamorphosis. #Monarch 🦋 #Butterflies

Just that one view ;-) lots of hodgepodge- but I am trying to get it more organized as I go along. The rudbeckias are just an orderly flower

Amazing how the coneflower feeds butterflies and bees. My selfish self hates leaving them up in my tidy garden after they turn black and ugly . . . But my good self loves watching the finches feed off the seeds in the winter.
