I don't want my fridge to have a camera or Wi-Fi. I don't want my dishwasher to be smart. I don't want my washing machine to text me. In fact, I kinda miss knobs and dials and knowing big appliances would last 20 years and could still be repaired.

We just got a new dryer with knobs and dials 😉
Yes, yes, yes!
Those new appliances can be serviced, arguably easier with diagnostic tools that read the device. Thats not the problem. These new appliances spy on users.
I agree. But FWIW, I don't blame the manufacturers. When they made the ones that lasted decades, we had few retailers and brand loyalty. That is now gone. Most of us now shop by price. To compete, manufacturers have to make them cheaper, thus not as long lasting. Corp. greed is only part of this.
I’m not sure you are correct. I do have brand loyalty. I have bought Miele appliances for decades. But the latest one has been a lemon. When I replace my 20 yo ones I will look around for one that lasts, not the cheapest.
You could be right. Not sure. Just my feeling of things.
I bought a refurb old school high power Mieke canister vac recently. Better than the new 890w "Econoline" ones they sell now because the EU mandated a max power level below what they sold. The new ones are apparently "unremarkable".
yes, I’ve heard that. I have an older one that is great.
Yup, I bought an old cat dog version from Germany and plan to keep it and just get it repaired as needed in the future.
I would pay extra if it meant there was a good chance an appliance would last beyond 5 years.
Yeah, I would too. But most people wouldn't I don't think. And even so, I'd have to know for sure that it would. Maybe a zillion reviews would convince me!
Seems like the more special features an appliance has, there are more things that can go wrong with it.
To quote my favourite starship engineer: The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the sink
👍
Bring😃 back the washboard!!
Musical instrument too ☺️
I kinda want a smart dryer, or at least one smart enough to schedule when it runs. Then I could set it to run overnight when electricity is cheaper but I'm already asleep and can't manually start it.
And I still have a house phone of the button numbers variety.
Agreed!
We had a house guest who made toast on the gas stove because he was so confused by the toaster oven (which isn't smart and has knobs, but still -- complicated!).
Amen! Was just having this discussion last night. bsky.app/profile/ther...
I have no issues with software being used - but I do draw the line when internet and cloud services required for anything to work properly. I did not do my research before buying the robot vacuum. At least it can work in a limited way, but meh...
Do you really have a ferret, Legrady?
yes, he is the third one
Oy veh! I had to replace my older robo vac, and what a shock! I couldn't use the new one until I upgraded my cell phone, which was only 5 yrs old. The old robo vac had a remote control, but the new ones use your phone. I hate that! I don't want to control stuff with a cell phone. NO NO NO!!!!
Twenty years ago, I bought what must have been one of the last-generation washer/dryers with knobs and dials; still operation today, with no repairs. Those new models with loads of circuitry and displays that light up like the space shuttle are constantly on the fritz.
Speed queen still makes basic washers and dryers and they still last forever. The last of their kind.
I refuse to live with a stranger named Alexa
I now yell "Alexa, time five minutes" whenever I pour boiling water over a teabag, even when I'm somewhere there isn't an Alexa.
Me too! I find Alexa et al creepy!
I have a cousin named Alexa. She's not creepy at all, but I imagine it annoys her a bit people saying her name and ordering her to do things all the time.
Exactly.
Totally
That's why I bought a commercial grade Speed Queen washer and dryer nine years ago. The guys who delivered them remarked how heavy they were compared to the Samsung and LG models which they delivered. "Those are mostly plastic," they said. "Yours will last forever."
I bought Miele DW and W/D 20 years ago. They still work. I bought a new one for my cottage about 7 years ago. It broke in 2 years and I paid over $100s trying to get it fixed. Finally I just found a work around. I can still get it to kinda work. Don’t know what I’ll buy next time around.
Same. Cost more, but I won't need to throw it out in three years.
Yep. We buy commercial ones, like for laundromats that get used 24/7. The last one we had for 20 years and were able to replace the heat sensor once and rubber drum gasket twice (ourselves). Up and running again in no time.
Smart woman!
My rescue friend has a Speed Queen. One time I transported a dog to her that had barfed & diarrhea-ed all over his crate towels so I was ready to toss them. She was like "I have a Speed Queen! THE TOWELS CAN BE SAVED!" (epilogue: the towels were saved.)
Thanks for the info! My old Maytag is still going strong, and I dread getting a new one.
I read that the speed queens were still available. I hope they will be next I replace currant model.
The local appliance store where I bought my Speed Queens nine years ago sill carries the brand!
I have a Samsung washer and dryer. I hate them. Constantly on utube to clear a code. We have started looking to replace.
You have very pretty picture on your profile can you accept me request please
I've got a Speed Queen washer and dryer. All dials. That's why I bought them 12 years ago. Have not had one problem.
I’m having mine delivered this week. It should last me for the rest of my life. It has an agitator and I can open the lid to add items during the cycles. Classic and back to basics.
I scored a Maytag Centennial commercial dryer on Facebook Marketplace for $50 and it seems there’s a nonzero chance I’ll have this dryer for the rest of my life.
Speed Queen top loader all the way!
I just did the same! Actual buttons and dials, washer tub fills with water, can wash a load in 20 minutes! Sadly, 3x the cost
Mine were maybe 20% higher in cost but I felt it was well worth it.
I guess in the long run you may have saved yourself replacing 3x at least
And not just that it lasts 3x as long but also the hassle saved from the frustrating issues of cheap washers, like redoing loads from suboptimal performance or time spent troubleshooting problems...
Yup. In Australia, looking at $3500 each. I only have room for a washing machine, no dryer, but I have warred with myself about this constantly. "I could get 5-6 other washing machines over the years instead, for the same price ...". Result: 2 years, no machine yet
One concern is that reports are that the most recent Speed Queens have apparently slipped on quality and do use electronics behind the visible dials. :-(
Bummer!
IKR? Lol, this is how one knows one is a card-carrying experienced adult. One has strong opinions over the quality of washing machines, and far too much knowledge of how they've changed over the years. E.g., I still miss screw agitators, which Speed Queens haven't used in years.
Since SQ not as high quality and hugely expensive now, and you have no room for a dryer, is a combo washer/ dryer feasible?
No, the one I've used in a rental was crap quality plus a fire hazard as a bonus (Samsung). In Australia, a dryer is not essential. I just plan to do without, as many do. But I'd like a decent washing machine!
Building brand loyalty with a solid product and domestic support to back it up turned out not to be a sustainable business model. Oh, how they laughed when I suggested "planned obsolescence."
For many fields (e.g. for home appliances, it absolutely) still sounds like a conspiracy theory more than anything else.
Why, though? Who hasn't experienced their gadgets failing promptly after warranty expiration? The producers themselves do not need to "plan" for obsolescence when the thousands of components their devices are made up of are sold TO the manufacturers with a reliability rating already.
I'm just saying that in this case, it's not conspiracy against us; just merely how things work nowadays. That's a whole different approach to the problem and is worth more discussion. I appreciate simplicity too
I was dumb enough to buy a fridge with wi-fi. The App is basically only intended to pester me to buy the water filters. That's what the App does.
if it keeps nagging you just threaten to pull the plug... that will shut him off ..
My previous oven lasted over 20 years. The current on has a touchscreen and an app. I’ll be lucky if it lasts five.
You just validated why big business pushed us in this direction. They don’t want sell you want you need nor want, they want you to buy what they sell, blindly. Pay for a warranty. Get shoddy replacement parts and then eventually replace it in 3 years after everyone has gotten a piece of your wallet
They could make machines last forever but don’t cause they need ever increasing profit.
I don't know, I mean logically it makes sense, and there have been lawsuits, but for totally universally speaking, it still sounds like a conspiracy theory more than anything else.
Have you ever noticed how indicator lights on your car never break? Normal rear lights do. Why? Because broken Indicator lights can cause accidents much more likely. So they make them last almost forever. Longer than your lightbulb at home.
I have a super cheap blender which I never expected to last long. Nonetheless I have to for almost 8years now. This proofs that things, even when cheap, can last! So don’t anyone tell me that renowned brands that cost 8 times more can not be build to last.
Then it's not universal. And I said "universally speaking". There are areas where durability is simply put, not that important. Such is the nature of corporations, it's not an enigmatic world phenomena about planned obsolescence.
The price of waste is approximately zero, so this is what happens. Of course, it's not really zero, we just pretend it is and let companies make record profits exploiting this, because line go up
Planned obsolescence…
Having a washing machine two floors below notify you it’s done so you don’t have to keep going up and down stairs to check is heaven-sent. And I will hear no arguments to the contrary.
My old school top loader takes 35 minutes on the heavy duty cycle. I just look at the clock and know when it’s time to go downstairs and put into the dryer. 🤷♀️
The more environmentally-friendly modern ones these days use sensors to know how long they have to wash your clothes to get them clean, when they've been spun-dry as much as they can be, etc., so it's not a strict "X minutes in this cycle, Y in this one, Z in this one" like Ye Olden Times. :-)
I don’t have the fancy sensors. My washer has where I can custom adjust the load fill level to my satisfaction with a dial. The time a load takes, depends on which cycle I use. The longest takes 45 minutes with a pre wash for diapers. It’s low tech and I love it over new machines.
how many people got eyes stitch up looking at the Big battery ARK 10 Golden rules find the picture and great depression was USA starving to death in soup limes and no telling how many the cop's see every day
And literally the only reason they connect everything, is because they want all of your data. They want to know how often you wash your clothes, what brands of detergent, etc. They want to spy on people, to steal their data, so they can sell it to governments, insurance companies, etc
My over 30 year old washing machine finally broke down. I feel like I'm programming a space ship in the new one.
50 yr old washer/dryer in my MiL’s cabin do a good job cleaning clothes.
Totally.. What happened to the temp and time dial. Done.. Mine how has about 20 steps to run a 30 min load. My old washer took 5 seconds to start.
Don't worry, you'll get to do it again in 5 years when that one breaks.
The "washing machince [texting] me slayed me.Having a frdige with a camera sounds like a nightmare, too. I don't want to have to brush my hair before getting milk for morning coffee. Or is the camera inward facing to see if you have enough oranges left before it orders some?
Exactly! I have my 2002 Acura RSX for 22 years, not just because I loved it but because it didn't have bells and whistles. I ended up having to get another car because it died and I got a 2012 Honda Civic, the only bells and whistles I like on it is the USB port for my ipod. Yes I'm old school 🥴
We Should have kept the Norge.20 years without a problem. Convinced that it was old and we should get a new fancy, updated washer. Lasted less than 5 years. Always unbalanced etc.
Same goes with cars tbh
A car dealership tried to sell me a car that was mostly touchscreen, with no other dials. I didn't want it. They then tried to say they didn't have any other vehicles (of that class) to offer me. Since car makers are putting a touch screen in cars anyway, they want to save money by putting all ->
controls on that. It's easier to code a few more screens than build knobs & buttons for users to press. The fact that this isn't ideal (or safe at all) for driving, or that people can't find settings they need, doesn't concern them. They're only making cars to make money, after all
I bought a car a little less than a year ago and was talking with the guy at the dealer about my hatred for touchscreens in cars and he said that most of the people he dealt with felt the same way. People aren't even asking for them. It's all auto makers. People want knobs and dials.
You can feel knobs and dials while you're driving. Switching between radio stations, adjusting the temp, etc. used to be easy and now I have to wait for a stoplight or pull over as often as not. Big screens are great for navigation, and that's it.
Because eventually, car features will be subscription, the car seat heaters in some luxury cars. It's f-ing ridiculous.
Ikr? I’m still using the refrigerator that was in my house that I bought 23 years ago and it’s going strong. I dread the day it breaks.
Ditto! And I love the used marketplace where those dials and knobs are still holding up just fine.
Cars with touchscreens are an issue. With knobs and buttons you can adjust settings with muscle and tactile memory.
Yes!! Don’t make me take my eye off the road to turn off the heated seat or to stop the navigation. Buttons.
Less crap in the landfill.
Planned obsolescence is sadly here to stay. Cue up the landfills.
My parents started complaining about it in the 1970s. My mother’s DW, bought in the early 1960s, lasted 50 years. The new owner of the house she left it in when she sold trashed it though it worked perfectly. Ma would’ve taken it back.
I tend to keep the old appliances til they die as well. It’s sometimes problematic with my iPhone as Apple stops updating its security at some point, forcing me to upgrade
Same issue with iPhones. When the updates stopped on my 6S I gave it to my 93 year old mom who uses it only for phone calls. She loves it!
Good reuse plan. 👍
I have begun replacing stuff with older technology. For example, I am working on my novel on a 100 plus year old typewriter. I want a world war 2 era radio next so I can turn off the tv and listen to radio shows if they still make them. Heat my house with firewood rather than oil, the old way. etc..
Yes!!!
I wish the same for cars. Nowadays, they spy more than cellphones.
I bought the cheap Rku tv and now it spies on me.
I just replaced my stove, for one with knobs, doesn't even have a clock!
I have to buy a new oven because the door hinges broke. I’ve had three separate techs come out and charge me over $100 each to tell me they can’t fix it
Yes exactly. Our 20 year old refrigerator will need to be replaced and I dread buying new junk. That’s what new appliances. Gone are the days of appliance and tv repairmen fixing what you have. Now just discard and buy again.
I desperately wanted a bottom freezer. Because my doorways are so narrow, I was limited in choices. Ended up with a GE top freezer that was basically the newest model of my old one . 3 ft.³ larger. I am pretty happy… No bells nor whistles !
Here’s the secret to buying a new fridge: there are actually only 3 manufacturers, despite all the different brands If you look at them in person you’ll see that a lot are basically identical except for aesthetics Pick the one with a good warranty
There’s still a lot of great appliance repairmen out there!!
I just saying the same thing about cars to an old friend. I don’t want to charge it, to drive for me, or communicate where I’m going to anyone. I don’t need screens, lane assist, or automatic parking. I just want it to start and stop when I want it to and not cost 1k to replace an alternator.
Some of these new safety features are actually very welcome. My car will brake if I don't, and it will also alert me if someone is driving in my blind spot. Those two things are as good as safety belts or airbags. But other stuff seems marketing jargon.
As someone who worked for a Chevy dealership service dept for several years, I can definitely say that there is a lot of “complexity for complexity’s sake” in modern vehicles and many times it doesn’t need to be in place for function or efficiency.
They want them to be so complicated that only the dealer can fix them. I’m about to dump my 2020 Jeep and buy an old classic to drive. Every car I’ve owned since 2010 has been complete garbage. I have matchbox cars that are built better. Crappy electronics and way too much plastic.
Beyond complexity, there’s the whole “right to repair” fight with the proprietary diagnostic/repair tools that manufacturers have for dealerships only; Module programming and configuration isn’t allowed by a standard consumer.
I’m going back to OBD 1..or earlier. I’m sick of it.
Flash diagnostics was a good thing that was stolen from us.
My electronic power steering went out and instead of just add some fluid, I had to replace my entire steering column for $2500. On top of that, I had to have the dealer so it. It's ridiculous.
Steering angle sensor? Those were notorious for failing for absolutely no reason. The labor of tearing half the interior apart just to get at the damn thing is ridiculous.
I agree; manifolds have replaced simple hoses. If the manifold breaks, you are stranded until you get a new part. They made the change to speed up production at the cost of reparability.
It’s not an uncommon occurrence to hear techs say that these vehicles are designed to be assembled, not repaired. Though most of the time that’s said because some absurd component(s) have to be removed to fix some simple issue due to tool/fastener clearances.
Yup. I had ‘23 Toyota pickup with a defective engine…the entire cab as well as hood/fenders had to be removed. I just said no and sold it back to them. It’s truly insane.
But I got the extended warranty on my Corolla hybrid. I don't want to be in debt paying for a nun-functioning car.
I was reading something about Toyota trucks losing a lot of quality. Their smaller vehicles are still well made since only the larger engines are problematic.
My Scion is 18 years old and still running great. (Knocking on wood)
*sunsetting
Correct. This was their new twin turbo v6 in the tundra. Didn’t even make it to 15k miles before catastrophic failure. They’re sundering their “reliable” business model.
We really need to get away from gas though, if that requires charging then I'll accept that.
Look at those glasses in your pfp maybe you should rethink the lane assist part.
since you don't know what glasses do, you're an ass.
Two years in Charlotte really did a number on my manners
yes!
And this is why I drive a forerunner. I need to change the time? I push a button.
Ditto. As a designer & builder, I can say…”simpler is better.” And often less expensive. Back to the basics.
My parents bought our fridge in the mid 60's. When they bought a bigger one in the 70's the original was moved into the garage. When I visited my brother in 2013 that fridge was still working with only the coils replaced. Now I feel grateful when a big-ticket item lasts 10 years.
One of the things that I love about my Mustang Mach E (electric vehicle) is that despite it having a big touch screen to control most things, it still has a physical knob to turn. Most of the time the knob controls the audio volume, but if, e.g., you push the fan button it controls the fan.
I prefer the Leaf with everything as a physical button and knob but also has Android Auto.
💯
Old school is good school...
Ya, agree, and I want a simple, analog life where I actually go into a movie theater, see imagery composed of silver halide crystals and share the experience with my fellow beings.
I hate that there are 400 different light bulbs with different shades, colors and lumens. Give me a plain ol’ 40 or 60 watt basic bulb that all were the same color!
I like that all the lighting in my house switched on at the same time doesn't even register a load on my battery inverter. The only LED colour you need is warm white.
You mean soft white… or is it warm white…🤣🤣
It's got some number of kelvins, but that only reinforces your original point!
Have a Whirlpool double oven from '85. It has 3 dials (top temp, bottom temp, top mode) and a clock. Still works flawlessly.
I have a convection oven that's passed down from my grandma to my mother to me. That thing is probably older than 90% of the world population.
Our cottage has the original harvest gold stove that was installed when the place was built in 1972. It still works like a charm!
That sounds awesome!! I love original appliances 🥰
It'd be fine if it was all open protocols and open standards. But it's subscription, closed source, unobtainium APIs etc. No thanks. I don't want to load alternate firmware on my fridge to make it work how I want it to work.
Agree and would just add it would be controlled by home servers
I'd be fine with that. Let me run something locally. Let **me** control it.
Yes 👍 I am a bit afraid this going to be a case of the consumer being the product - you get automation free but then some crazy billionaire will get access to your data to whoever
My Sears Kenmore washer I got when I was first married lasted me 25 yrs. My daughter has gone through 3 in 10 yrs 😒
I had a Sears Kenmore washer/dryer we purchased in 1977 Kept the washer until 2022 (Replaced belts as needed) We STILL have the dryer (Replaced motor 3 years ago, MUCH cheaper than new dryer!) Works fine Currently still using “ineffecient”1977 GE fridge in cellar Drives my millennial kids crazy
Kept purchasing the extended warranty and never had to pay anytime it needed fixing. Sears finally offered $500 towards a new one because they were losing $ 😂
Still on my kenmore w/d bought in 2000. They have survived three moves and still work great. Little rust on the bottom, one piece that has to be rubber banded on the washer to cycle fully. Small price to pay. And they cost $800 for the pair 😊
Agree
I completely agree. One of my sci-fi books takes this premise much further, and let’s just say AI and biological existence kinda is completely incompatible. For decades, I’ve frequently stated: “sometimes a toaster just needs to be a toaster.”
Ray Bradbury's The Veldt.
Had not seen it—YouTube had it to watch. Super creepy for sure… I recall another movie where a house is computer controlled and gives birth/rise to a child from a silver spinning diamond device…attempting to locate that, too. Random access memories can be fun.
Demon Seed.
I always think of that film when this subject comes up! I would have been mid-teens when I saw it and it terrified me!
I had the pleasure of seeing it on The Movie Channel when I was about 9 or 10…or that’s how I recall, anyway.
I try to buy used appliances for this and other reasons. My new clothes washer glitches and goes through every cycle of every setting, and not even unplugging it stops the pattern. I will drag it out to the road as soon as I find an old washer with no electronics.
Just said that to the nice dryer tech who has to research how to fix my dryer because he’s the third tech I’ve hired to take care of it.
Sometimes being a Luddite is just smart policy
This was one of the points made in the Battlestar Galactica reboot series (~2003) and I think about it whenever smart appliances come up
And a great show
Battlestar Galactica was created by a Mormon, is based on Book of Mormon stories and theology and the IP is still owned by the creator’s estate which still donates to the church that causes so much harm.
loved that show!
And not require separate apps just to use them. Are there even any old style appliances left?
...or any app, for that matter.
Don't get me started on the "auto load balanced sensor" feature. That machine would fill-run-drain-fill-run-drain for hours trying to get that load balance just right.
And I bet its claims of energy-efficiency and water-saving were based on some artificially simple load that got agitated and spun in one shot!
smart lighting is handy, A Smart fridge is stupid, Smart dishwasher Ehh... Maybe for SOME people (say disabled individuals.) but most things truly don't need the interconnectivity.
A good use case for smartness in your dishwasher is to have it start when the electricity prices are the lowest every night, and return diagnostic information. People are talking about it like connectivity has replaced reliability. I do not think it has. Connectivity is way cheaper than reliability.
Which works until it doesn't, right? It could be useful as long as the network your appliance is connecting to stays up and continues to get valid rate information from the utility company, until it gets hacked. Like most IOT devices, the security is garbage.
IOW more ways to fail.
Our dishwasher has a timer on it. It does not need to be connected to the Internet.
How does it know when the prices drop? Every night the cheapest times vary. Similar argument for fridges, smart tech could allow them to chill to bottom end of the temp range when prices are lower, and when prices rise only chill to required temperature. Would be great to help renewable sources.
Our prices drop between 22.00 and 06.00. If you can tell the time it's dead easy. The dishwasher doesn't actually need to know.
That’s 20th century thinking. The future is variable pricing, already available from several suppliers eg:
What you appear to be illustrating is that 21st century thinking is to reduce prices in line with 20th century practice, but call it 21st Century thinking. Are you in Marketing, by any chance?
Please tell me next time your off peak rate goes negative due to oversupply on the grid so you get paid for consuming electricity, then I’ll agree that we are still in the 1970s.
OK I'll bear that in mind.
I was going to say the same thing. Mine is 15 years old, has a clock. I set it to run 3 hours from now, and tada. Nothing all that smart.
20?! Some lasted twice that - & would still be working if those old-timey cords hadn't frayed!
Exactly! We bought all new appliances 3 years ago when we remodeled our kitchen. All Whirlpool. We recently replaced the ice maker in the fridge for the THIRD time!!!! Junk!
LG’s craft ice maker is garbage, went 3 mos after the warranty went out. LG refuses to offer a true repair, other than to replace it with a new motor, which goes out in 6 months. I just turned it off & use the door ice. What a wasted feature.
They are all building junk!
Remodeled in ‘16 new matching appliances for the 1st time in my life. I can ”hear” the fridge is going to go in the not too distant future (repaired once already) Replaced the microwave/exhaust fan this year. And every time I wipe the stove electronic control panel off, I wonder when that will fail
They are all building junk!
I find it kind of cool that I can start my oven pre-heating as I check out at the grocery store through the app on my smartphone. I also love that the oven can use wi-fi to set the time.
u could use WFI to order pizza :)
Yeah our fridge and dishwasher are completely without all that special tech and a repairman praised us and talked about how great they are and how long they'd last us. It felt SO GOOD.
We bought a chest freezer 28 years ago when we moved. I put a monitor on it the other week, thinking that it would be inefficient these days. It barely registered any consumption over 24 hrs cost was 7p.
Needing to replace ours as both have failed this last year. The dishwasher came with the house, and all I can say is it was old and worked, until it died. The fridge I bought over 40 yrs ago. May I ask the brand you have, if those are still available?
I honestly can't remember but I'll check when I get home tonight!
frigidaire washer and kenmore refrigerator.
I don’t remember ever having a Frigidaire. Kenmore was solid, gotta love em. Like the original Craftsman tools, unbeatable for personal tools. Thanks!
Thanks! Having bought large appliances so rarely, I find myself at a loss.
Analog for the win!
AGREED!!!!
I am a tech weenie and an early adopter, and I, too, miss the simplicity of some of the old appliances. There are too many options, and they are too easily broken.
damn straight, I feel the same way. I like driving a car old enough it doesn't have smart anything, or subscription anything. w00t!! especially when they end up using lowest bidder for the smart screens so if they die you are well fcuked!
I’m with you there !
Amen!
I've replaced the motherboard in my refrigerator 3 times now. It's maybe 15 years old and the 1st repair guy recommended replacing the fridge. I went to Google and YouTube to figure out how to fix it.
...the very concept of a motherboard in a refrigerator...🙄
Say it!!!!
I’d still roll down my window manually if the car guys would allow it.
I want a washing machine without a computer. I found one. It cost $2000. If I win the lottery I'll buy it. I bet it lasts forever.
We have a Speed Queen washer and dryer. We love it. Very simple with knobs for control selection. The top loader design is great. Our previous front loader washer would always leak around the door.
I can take or leave WiFi connectivity but absolutely need all my appliances to have delayed starts/finishes so they can load shift onto cheap electricity.
The Smart appliances do not last as long.
Planned obsolescence is down to a science in electronics where you can literally program the end. Ok maybe a little cynical but I worked on operating systems for custom devices that needed to run 24/7 in people’s homes and we regularly had devices lasting over 10 years. 🙄
For my 21st birthday my mom gave me a used Cannon AE1. It was an early 'smart' camera. Last semester my 20 yo daughter used the same 45 yo camera for her photography class. We only had to put in a new battery and it worked as designed. I don't think durability diminishes with the addition of smart.
I have it! What an amazing camera it was ❤️
Is. My daughter still uses it.
No doubt, it is such a reliable and durable object. I switched to digital but I'm not really sure my actual camera will last so long as my glorious AE-1
I have a very small very cute 60s GE electric stove and it works like a damn dream. My parents have a fancy huge gas stove that can never be properly repaired and doesn’t work half the time. I love my stove.
My in laws asked me what kind of gas range they would get and I told them to buy a used professional one because they're about the same price and quality as the expensive home one but every single part is replaceable.
I have a microwave from Ikea - no buttons or displays. I tell people I love it for its good value & simplicity, but secretly I'm comforted to know I can potentially do the grenade in a microwave booby trap trick from "Under Siege" if my kitchen is ever taken over by terrorists and I have a grenade.
I wouldn’t mind WiFi for my oven. How nice it would be to preheat the oven before I get home.
Most ovens have a timer you can set to turn for just this reason. I know my oven from 1995 even had this :)
I know literally nobody who ever sussed out how to use timers on their ovens to do that sort of thing. And I'm the generation who set the VCR clock for their parents, so .. y'know... not a luddite or anything. :-)
🤣😂. I’m early 60’s. But have always been good with technology. My adult kids come to me for help sometimes.💕
I think mine has that but sadly I’ve never used it.
It’s never a good idea to run an oven when no one’s home to watch it.
Truth be told!
Yep
My dryer was old when I bought my house in 09. I've been thru 3 washing machines so far, but the now ancient dryer is still kicking just fine!
Sounds like it’s on the MAGA dance card…
Same just had to replace my fridge that was only 9 years old. It was cheaper to buy a new fridge than fix the compressor on it. Kinda lame
Te lo explico: - Fabricar es un proceso industrial. Optimizado - Reparar es un proceso artesanal. Derrocha recursos.
We had the same thing last fall - 9 year old fridge crapped out - something something electronic - hugely annoying. Meanwhile the (mechanical only) washing machine that came with the house and must be at least 20 years old keeps chugging away 🤷♀️
My fridge is 9 years old with a 10 year compressor warranty. I am waiting for the failure in 13-14 months.
Keeping it dumb in this house.
Your Roomba has a camera and it can be accessed by third parties!
Early in our marriage, I took a fan in to be repaired. A FAN. It was pale green metal, a GE classic. It was good for another 20 years. Now of course, it is unusable because it will chop the fingers and paws off of small beings, but it was sure solid.
When this old workhorse, that belonged to my late grandfather, had trouble turning on, I tried to find a shop that would just take it apart to just clean and oil it, no one would take it. "Parts" they kept saying. Ignoring my parents, I taught myself how to do it. Moves air like a wind tunnel again.
I’d LOVE that style in my house. So great-looking!
how did u use it without WIFI ?
Mankind had developed opposable thumbs by then. 😉
witch would fit trough the fan cover .. ah i can see your problem now...
🤣
I would actually like my washing machine to call me when its done. Damn fucking timer is always wrong
It's the incessant bloody beeping that does my head in.
Today the shelve life of appliances are around 7 years. I have replaced some of my appliances in the kitchen twice in 15 years. Right before the pandemic my washer broke down and the fridge. Good thing I was a GC and in electronics I fix the stove and replaced the other two.
Just wait until they put AI into all our appliances. Soon they will be able to talk to you directly and just think eventually they could all start talking to each other and even worse start plotting against us!😆
or the oven and the refrigerator start to have feelings for each other ... u might gain one of those little freezybake ovens
😂
We miss the times when we had over-engineered appliances, not the ones that sends us notifications & asks for software updates on a Sunday at 9 am!
As someone who deals with those precise things you dislike, I second your woes. 🥰
And after they sell you that smart appliance, they’ll require you to buy a subscription
Facts Machines that work >>> Fancy machines that break all the time
Yeah, I hate that new cars tend to have touchscreens for everything. I know why they do (it's cheaper for them to do that), but it's still stupid, and keep your eyes off the road a second or two longer because you have to look at the screen to make sure you're in the right place.
It also doesn't offer any support for your arm which is a bad choice for an environment that moves; trying to hit a small on-screen area on a bumpy road is a crappy experience.
I mean, some innovation is cool. My washing machine weighs the load before the wash starts to calculate how much water it should use, avoiding waste. But I specifically chose a model without WiFi. I just want my appliances to be reliable and do what they're supposed to, not connect to the internet.
I simply ignored the feature.
Interesting to me that you like this feature. I don’t. I sometimes have to add a big bucket of water to a lightweight load to make it heavier. The machine doesn’t use enough water to get the clothes wet if I don’t.
It works well. I've never had a problem with clothes not being washed as they should.
Problem is that the new appliances are not reliable. My GE combo washer/dryer lasted 2 yrs, 2 mo before issues and I dumped it. Too costly to repair.
My washer has lasted 3 and a bit years so far, and has a 10-year warranty on the motor. Hopefully it'll keep working. Things like reliability and obsolescence are definitely an issue with modern appliances, though, along with over-engineering.
What brand is it that offers a 10 yr warranty? Most are only 12 months now.
My "smart" washing machine is infuriating. Most times I don't think it uses enough water, and I hate that I have to wait an eternity to open the lid after the cycle has finished—because the door is locked.
Sadly, most of them are like that now and take twice as long to wash a load.
It's not that they are not reliable. They are disposable. Because they want you to buy more. Capitalism.
That's exactly it.
all combo w/d will die much sooner than regular machines. ex-hub is an appliance repairman. he pities the ppl who call to repair those b/c they are hopeless machines.
In my unit there is only space for this type of appliance. I am now going to the laundromat.
I guess to the op's concern about nobs lasting longer than touch displays, having the wifi connection at least gives it a longer life. You can always isolate your IOT devices on a guest network, protecting your main network.
Good suggestion for those with IoT devices, although I've avoided IoT appliances in my kitchen/utility thus far. I just don't have a need for the connectivity.
Yeah, I try to keep listening devices out of the house. But washing machine is nice. You can download custom wash cycles, and they seem to work well! Lighting control has been great. And controlling a smoker for a 6 hour cook is great.
Having worked 20 years in IT as a techie, and with 40 years experience, I can unequivocally say; "nobody" knows what you are talking about. Most buyers don't even know it's an IoT device they've bought, very much less how to secure one. I don't disagree, I just see it's next to futile.
Friend setup a virtual dead end home network that he turns on during setup and then turns off. Hey let's discuss SCADA, ethercat or modbus
As a techie I was blinded by my own bias for so long, "everyone should understand this!", turns out nobody did, including my own managers, and especially not sales&marketing, nevermind the customer. Having had my user manuals sanity checked by "normies" helped me curing the bias somewhat.
Oriental motors should have a native english speaker read their 400+ page manuals.
Yeah, that was nice. I had a washing machine that outlasted my first marriage and well into my second/current/permanent marriage. 25+ years.
What is the NET Domestic Product? What happened to the data on the Depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods? Economists with PhDs can fail to do Algebra for Seven Decades.
When I got my new washer and dryer I got the most basic one possible (the dryer doesn’t even have a light) because I knew I’d have a higher chance of being able to fix it myself.
My washer displays the time until it's done and has a knob to choose between what modes i want. That's it
Our first washer and dryer were Kenmores and lasted 18 years. We could have replaced them a few times over with what we spent on the extended warranties, but the techs said the LG’s and Samsungs were shit. Wound up replacing them with Speed Queens.
My washer/dryer are both basic Whirlpool models. I fixed the agitator issue myself for $10 in parts. I don't want the new options, either.
Oh, god, yes. The simple life!
I just took my Nest thermostat and smashed it to smithereens... Its not smart...either that or I am real dumb!
That definitely happened.
your bio is hilariously ironic.
I’m failing extremely hard this week it’s true
clip a foin
I bought a washing machine in 2001 which is still going strong. The guy in the shop said "get this one, it'll last". You press a button, it washes your clothes. Great.
How old are you?
When I bought a new refrigerator a couple years ago , I told the delivery guy that my old one was Thirty years old... His reply, well, you won't have to worry about this one lasting that long..!
Amen!!!
I have repaired my washing machine twice now Door lock and heating element
I don’t like the auto fill on the washer either! I want to choose the one water level myself 🤬
Agreed. The new Maytag I bought has the ability to manually add water if you'd like. The HE uses the bare minimum based on load size.
IKR? I am single. My clothes don't get filthy and require lots of abrasive subbing together to get kids' sport play dirt out of them, that degrades clothes more quickly. I'd rather let plenty of water wash away that "worn clothing" smell.
Washing machine texting…. lol
I don't need my appliances to be smarter than me, it hurts my feelings lmao 😂
If you have a WiFi appliance, the manufacturer collects all the data about how you use it. Customer data is the most valuable currency for them.
According to an Austria engineer, the only brand in Europe designed for possible repairs is Miele.
My washing machine (Miele) came with a sticker ”built to last 20 years with daily use”. It has been working fine for 19 years, perhaps there is some trouble ahead within a year?
Dysons can be repaired too. My 26 year old Dyson vacuum cleaner still works after a visit to the Dyson repair centre a couple of years ago.
My Jeep Wrangler is a 13, every mechanic I know who work in dealerships tell me, my year is one of the last good yrs. I don’t want a new hybrid/electric or a digital dash. Nope. The newer cars always break down.
Adding a computerized control board means the now most expensive component of your appliance is also the most likely to crap out on you...
My ice maker is controlled by a sensor that feeds back to the refrigerator CPU. The CPU got wonky and wouldn't stop making ice. Bought a 200.00 eBay CPU the world is happy.
Wouldn't happen to be an old GE side-by-side GSH25xxx model, would it? Asking for, uh, someone who paid $400 for a Sears guy to fix that, once...
GE PDS22SCRBRSS - BUT this is not for the unwary - I'm an electrical engineer by training. I kept my Bosh dishwasher going for 20+ years - bu replacing the keyboard/processor board and switches - but the pump went - and it was time to go. www.ebay.com/itm/15335628...
I work in biomed at a hospital, so I see the same thing at work all the time with medical equipment. And having everything tied into the internet creates its own set of issues.
Plus the risks that entails with personal data leaks. When I did medical test system design, all the data was encrypted, making things extra challenging. Then you have the issues of radio interference that I'm sure you deal with all the time.
You gotta have an ace IT dept. It's a big hospital and the system is wonky on a good day. Plus there are software updates and the like that never seem to incorporate seamlessly.
I miss building medical stuff.
I had to retrain when 250K tech workers lost work in the early 90s, so I was a dialysis tech for 24 years. Before that I was a Navy ET, worked for Defense and NASA subcontractors. I did some dialysis Biomed out of boredom. The two careers dovetailed nicely. I don't miss patient care one bit.
Gnarly. I've small r retired now, but I've done everything from cellphones, security appliances, insulin injectors, fracking equipment, SCADA, water treatment... Be persistent and adaptable with a can do attitude and things work out.
I fix everything in my house and the only thing I replaced was the 1985 Panasonic microwave. It still works, so I gave it up for adoption. The fake wood panelling just didn't match the decor 😜
I did the same my adult children were worried about microwave leaks on a microwave older than they are. The new one has a stupid safety feature - it turns the heat off 10 seconds before the end of the cycle. BTW - at work our frig made it 40years until an ice pick used to remove the ice buildup.
I have one of those in the basement. It stores beer. It still works. Newer fridge and freezer, the compressors went and not worth repairing. The Samsung fridge has a design defect that blocks defrost drainage. I fixed the design, and it works well now. I think these failures are intentional.
might be the solution for the melting of the north pole...
Seriously! I have a three y.o. #Samsung refrigerator that stopped working and the warranty repair people can’t figure out what’s wrong with it. 😡
I want our kids to be smart.
O.M.G.! There's a lot of us out here who feel the same way, Ann. The idea of having cameras inside my house, gives me the willies. And, Alexa listening to my private conversations with my wife is ridiculous. Me: "Would you like another glass of wine, dear" Alexa "No thank you" Ugh!
does alexa have headache's too ?
If she were here, I would ask her. But, luckily, she isn't.
so alexa has a girls night out right? great now you can grab a beer and sit on the couch in your underware
Yup. Give me an old Maytag washer with 3 wash cycles and 2 rinse and drain cycles any day, And, there have to be knobs, no flat digital buttons that are so touchy they go off every time you accidentally touch one of the fuckers, resulting in your whole cycle having to start over, etc., etc.
Idiots are donating this world now a days.
They be spying on you! Your fridge knows where you've been.
I bought my Speed Queen washer and drier about 8 years ago. Great products. Made in America, 10 year warranty. Search for these products- it is worth it.
Furthermore, purchased NOT from a big box, nor shipped from Amazon. Shop local!
You can't shop local where I live--very small town.
Still alternatives. Just gotta stay away from instant gratification.
It's not instant gratification to shop for groceries and stuff to repair my house. Our crappy stores are Walmart, Big Lots, and Ross. Lowes is the best store here.
Oh, and Dollar General and Dollar Tree. Yup, really good shopping here. 😬
Same in my town though I do have a grocery nearby. Remember the perseverance that f our pioneering ancestors. We can do this. Fuck Bezos.
My favorite washer, the AWN432! Mine lasted 14 years, then a bearing went out, then the tub seal. I still regret not repairing it. The new Speed Queen is arriving next week.
My Maytag (made in Mexico) is over 30 yrs old. I hope to keep it going.
That’s a good run. Don’t jinx it!
Exactly!! Who needs bells and whistles on household appliances?
How old-fashioned. And correct!
As far as I've heard, Project 25 wants to put video cameras under all toilet bowls so trump will know and see when you do it!!
I wish nothing more than trump having to watch me taking shits for the rest of his life
my sister still uses the vacuum we had as kids- a hoover (must be more than 50 years old)
a local grocery store advertised they have AI grocery carts- wtf? no way!!!
I want robots, not notifications.
Me too. Sometimes progress veers off into a blind ally.
Amen to that. Can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with this same theme.
Everything with a computer in it is going to eventually charge a subscription fee to work. Try to buy a new printer and you will see what I mean.
Just because I haven’t needed to shop for a printer lately… are you talking about ink cartridge subscriptions or something even MORE awful?
The thing that makes the subscriptions awful is that if you cancel you can't print, even if your printer is well stocked with ink/toner and paper. Thanks HP.
I’m sorry, I wasn’t completely clear. Are they requiring a subscription just to use proprietary software each time you print or something similar? I e never heard of this and it sounds utterly insane.
Yeah you need the subscription to print but you don't need proprietary software on your computer, other than the print driver. When you cancel the subscription though, you need to buy new cartridges as the ones you have are tied to the account. Even if they're full - they go in the bin.
So the subscription is to use the ink cartridges that you already paid for with a purchasing subscription?? Sorry, not trying to be obtuse but that’s just.. I’m speechless.
Yeah that's exactly it. And when you stop paying you can no longer print and your printer is just an ornament until you go and buy cartridges separately.
Unbelievable. Thanks for sticking with me. I just couldn’t imagine such gluttony. I should know better by now.
No problem. Yeah it's hard to believe. I just double checked what I was saying and it looks like HP actually cancelled the programme recently. I suspect they did that after they starting appearing in the mainstream media and people started gathering pitchforks... www.pcworld.com/article/2390...
Just like the BMW heated seats bullshit.
Those freaking printers. My grandma was asking me to make a 2 hours trip to help her print because she needed to connect to an account. She was printing 2 times a weeks. Grrr
Yup I found that out. I decided not to have a printer at all and use the local library's instead.
And I won’t “subscribe” to features on my appliances, machinery or household goods.
I have an old fridge that had lasted for over 20 years. It lasted longer than these new fridges out now.
My washing machine was texting me and it was getting creepy so I blocked it. Then my socks started disappearing.
Thanks so much for the literal lol! (I was tempted to rofl but I'd never get back up again. And I'd be at the mercy of the Roomba).
Sock laundering, if you will
u could try to threaten him with unplugging. they hate that. if it starts taking ur underwear u got to report it by the police. dept of laundry .
The socks disappeared before that, too, admit it.
About the only real benefit to “smart” appliances is your oven can send you a notification that you left it on. Depending on the manufacturer, this Jetsons shit is pretty useful.
THIS. I just "recycled" a tv with great sound and picture bc it decided to quit talking to DVD players, and fixing that tiny part was twice the cost of a new whole tv. Let me fix my sh*t, you greedy bas******!! Electronic switches seem to go out... often, how bout a knob?
100%
Amen!
I absolutely refuse to buy any of those appliances. I also will not purchase a vehicle that reports back to the company, any data about my driving or location. The One hated exception (a phone) STOP BUYING THEIR SURVEILLANCE TOOLS.
For cars, I need to be able to adjust temperature or switch a radio channel without taking my eyes off the road or removing my gloves. Touch screen will never work like this, but decent audio commands might.
And the song turn it up would max out your volume. Like when BK ad. ordered burger from alexa.
It didn't order the burger, it was "Okay Google, describe the Whopper" but still not great. Still, this is why we have activation commands. A song would need to see "Okay Google (or whatever), turn up the volume" to work.
I can see some artist writing a catchy dance tune that starts with "OK Google, turn up the volume" and ends with "OK Google, play it again!"
easy as to do that. Would be funny as?
Probably not. My voice is at a pitch where the robots rarely can recognize what I say. It's a PITA.
I do not want appliances which ”call home” to manufacturer. Appliances which are good at the thing I need them to do, are built to last and easy to repair. I want them to last at least 20 years. If it costs more, fine, but crazy data collection and crapware is not the way to go.
I totally agree. Just wait for when a new car does have a key and you need your phone as a key to start it. We are almost there. Don’t lose your phone or you won’t be able to drive.
My stove has been broken for years now because they don't make a replacement computer control board for it. So, I can't use the bake function. I've learned to cook everything on the convection setting.
If my washer and dryer were really smart they would fold my fucking fitted sheets and put away my clean clothes and don't get me started on that dishwasher bish because she should load herself and if the fridge was smart why didn't it throw out that rotten egg 🥚...non of them are as smart as my dog
Your dog can fold fitted sheets?
Why sure 👍
after a fashion.
My dog Mack folds sheets by biting a spot, then spinning in a circle until the sheet is tightly rolled in a circular lump.
For fitted sheets, that's about as good as it gets.
that’s how I do it
That's how I do it too!
Dogs are smart enough not to even try.
No they're smart enough to know just to wad up those things and stuff them away
My mother thinks I’m a bit crazy, but I love the outdated appliances in my apartment. They’re so reliable. When something does break, it’s just a quick part replacement. Blows my mind when maintenance comes and they’re out in 30 minutes.
Why not have it all ( minus the texting)
One problem is, the many models “without the smarts” are much lower quality. We recently bought a GE gas dryer without the extras, and the door is so flimsy, it’s hard to shut.
Same. I like the least amount of buttons possible and not have to read a gigantic manual to operate the appliance
Planned Obsolescence is a cancer in our society.
1000 times THIS.
I downgraded to a car WITHOUT a screen in it. Bliss.
Some features I will say are cool, but I hate how they’ve traded some cool features for quality, can we not have both damnit😭😂💙
If tech was pro-consumer every brand would run on one centralized data collection system and the only info it collects is “Is it working?” and “What part broke?” and you can opt out of that collection if you want to.
I can use my ancient gas stove even the electricity goes out. my rich neighbor can't because her gas stove has electronic controls.
How often have you used it with no power?
short answer. every day, even learned to cook by candlelight.
we just had three months of daily rolling blackouts. I normally use an electric kettle and rice cooker every day. couldn't use those during the 5 hour blackouts, so gas was all I had. I used it a LOT.
I'm no Luddite and am rather tech savvy. But that's the kind of thing that drives me crazy. I don't want stuff talking to me. Nor do I want them controlled by firmware or circuit boards--or worse, in the cloud.
I live in a poor country maybe 20 years behind the tines. it's so nice. we fix our own machines and cars.
Cuba
Ecuador
Hahaha close. Just about 1600 miles from Cuba, cheers to Ecuador with it's pristine lush green vegetation and good weed I have heard about😀👊🏿
it is truly the garden of Eden
Facts
This. Yes!
I have adhd, I kind of want my washer and dryer to text me haha
My 42 year old dryer is still working! I am probably jinxing it, but it hasn't needed a repair in 30 years.
It just broke
Bought my Zanussi washer/drier in 1988, still using it. 😁
The repairman who pronounced my 20 year old washing machine dead, said all the parts for that dryer are still available, except for the timer. Fingers crossed!
Maytag, by any chance? Our timer on the dryer is dying but we can still make it work. Same vintage.
It's a Kenmore.
Mine is about 30 years old. I had to replace the heating element. It took about twenty minutes.
When people say stuff like this, they should also mention brands. What brand (and model) is this?
It's a Kenmore aka Whirlpool.
Wow!!
Haha I just made this meme a few days ago. Seems appropriate here.
Give me analog!
As one who’s back to doing dishes by hand since our 5 yr old dishwasher’s “brain” died, I 💯 relate to this!
So true. It's hard to get anything today that isn't connected to the internet. My landline phone started giving me problems. I could call out but not receive calls. Called Bell, they no longer fix phones on copper wire. They installed wi-fi. If power goes out, I'm screwed. No smartphone either.
When I needed a new washing machine I told the (small, local) shop, “I don’t want mother boards that fry out, I want a mechanical dial.” They sold me a Speed Queen and I love it. Got the dryer last year.
That’s what you see in laundry mats. I would imagine they can take a beating for a long, long time.
Exactly.
When I was a kid, I would charge the other kids in the neighbor hood 25 cents for a ride on the Tilt-a_Whirl in my basement. #StupidKids
😁
I have a Speed Queen which I also love, but even then some of the buttons are too electronic for me. Still has the mechanical dial though. Waiting for my Bosch dryer to die before replacing it with a Speed Queen.
I just yelled at my husband that our next washer will be a top loading industrial washer that actually works. We never had problems with our old washers (till it died) and I have to go fix our new one constantly.
Yep. That was my thought as well.
I know my speed queen model was deployed in Afghanistan & troops used it to wash their sleeping bags, among other things, and it held up well thanks to a review left by a veteran. But it’s a front loader and I definitely understand wanting top loader
Mine is a top loader home model.
Same after my reliable 35 year old washer & dryer quit, I purchased a new set. They lasted 4 years. Called my local small repairman. He recommended Speed Queen set. Love it, going on 6 years.
I have speed queen but have to use tide pods because I’ve never been able to read the dispensing drawer in the washer despite using lighted magnifying glass. Detergent? Softener? Bleach? Prewash? Dunno Guess I could take photo with phone & enlarge but that’s so hi-tech
I bought Speed Queen machines when we moved in here 10y ago, the installers said “these machines will outlast you” plus union made in the USA! What’s not to love?
My son (who has a fancy LG) says we Speed Queen owners are like a cult. I _am_ always proselytizing their virtues so he may be right.
Saaame I am sure folks are sick of hearing me be smug about my washer & dryer but I love them so much!!
Both my Apeed Queen washer and dryer have been duds, and their customer service has been shit. I don't think they are making them like they used to. Plus, they don't even have a buzzer for when the washer or dryer is done, which I would really appreciate!
My 2 year old dryer has a buzzer. Don’t know about the washer, never needed it.
I'm the forgetful sort, unfortunately. My dryer is about 4 years old, but a buzzer was not an option for the bare bones model (less things to break 🙂)
I can only speak to the models I bought 10 years ago. Mine -does- have the buzzer, and has no computer parts, only old fashioned dials and buttons, which is all I want out of a washer & dryer. They maybe aren't quite as environmentally friendly as others, but they make up for it being reliable.
Wi-Fi enabled appliances are how Decepticons are made, I am certain of it.
And crank windows on cars.
Ditto. My last washing machine died after 20 yrs with a few repairs along the way. I still have my dryer. So far, no issues with new washer. All the digital crap & gagillion settings makes for a shorter life span. However. I do like the timer delay.
I'd also rather not have my car spying on me.
Our Maytag washer lasted more than thirty years. Our next replacement lasted two, the one after that lasted five. I agree, just let me have a basic heavy-duty machine that works and lasts. I have a TV, cell phone and I don't need a connection to my appliances.
Mine lasted about 26 years, and that’s when the repairman told me they weren’t making parts for them anymore. New fancy LG machines lasted about 5 yrs.
They are called speed queen.
Yes, and we have an appliance dealership here in town that sells them. I looked at Consumer Reports for a review and they said that Speed Queen had a reputation for excellence and durability up until just a few years ago. I'll look into them again when the time comes. Do you have one?
💯
