If Robocop 2 had been the pilot episode of the Robocop TV series, we’d think it was pretty good today. (Found something to watch on Tubi.)

I just always straight-up liked it, even before realizing that the "story" is about why most sequels don't work. Not as good as 1, but still not bad to me.
Yeah, same here. I enjoy it, I think it’s got some great parts, but overall it’s not a good movie. But look, 35 years later… Didn’t I just watch it again?
Fun fact. RoboCop is an honorary member of the real Toronto Police force. They filmed that show here and there was an official police/city ceremony to to induct him. It was embarrassing for everyone.
I’m embarrassed just READING it!
Also, there is a rifftrax copy of RoboCop the series episode 2 available. Finally, I have no idea why I have this much RoboCop knowledge, I saw part 3 and then decades later, part 1, and didn't like either.
Although I love the first one and have some affection for the second, I understand remembering too much about stuff you don’t like. I have to be careful because movies I hate stick in my head like its flypaper.
That’s for sure!
It's kinda almost good. It has smart ideas. I think it lacks the melodramatic emotional side the original has.
On TV watching with one eye while enjoying Bluesky with the other? Perfectly fun!
I kind of love it. Obviously not as good but...and in a way it's sort of it and 3 are sort of like pilots as it went to multiple tv projects after
That’s what I’m saying! If this were unshackled from being a disappointing sequel and reframed as an ambitious TV pilot, it’s pretty good. I like this movie, there’s a lot I think is fun (I don’t like 3 which I remember as pretty dreary, though).
Who was it who suggested Robocop 2 is better if you pretend it takes place between the second and third act of Robocop? It’s a neat idea.
Huh, I've never heard that before. Sounds like an idea for a fan edit!
The person proposed it because of how they walked back Robo’s development back into Murphy, and while I don’t think you can seamlessly line them up, I get the thinking behind it.
It's been a long time since I've seen 2, so I'm pretty vague on it. I did watch the first few episodes of the TV series recently tho. That was enough of that.
Two thing about Dr. Garcia in Robocop 2: Is she supposed to be the same character played by the much-loved Sage Miller in Robocop? She is CLEARLY in love with Robo and no one seems to mention this.
There’s something about Peter Weller slumming this time around that bums me out: he’s too good for this. He should’ve done like Liam Neeson after Darkman and bounced.
Maybe he thought there was something worth working on there? We don't have to agree with him, and yet...?
Yeah, who knows what this movie looked like on paper? The script was heavily rewritten, Irvin Kershner had directed The Empire Strikes Back, so he probably seemed like a good choice, I bet the money was better… I don’t blame him!
And I don’t hate this movie! I think it’s fun! I just think it’s a big step down from the original.
For the life of me I thought Weller did the DKR Batman voice in TNBA Legends of the Dark Knight ep, but the interwebs say I am wrong.
Michael Ironside. Wasn’t it Weller in the animated DKR (never saw it).
Yeah, it was Weller in DKR (and he was great).
Ah, that’s where my Mandela effects got crossed.
It's a great adaptation all around, but Weller really shines in it.
I remember liking it a lot. IIRC the movie clarifies that confusing shooting a mutant scene to the side of making it clear he kills the mutant, which is a shame.
I tend to find those DC animated adaptations lackluster compared to the comics they’re based on, but I have no doubt he nailed it.
For some reason they decided to take out the narration from Year One and it is very missed in the movie.
I heard the voice of the kid they got to play Year One Batman and I think I understand why they’d do that.
Point, but yeah, the lack of narration really does hurt the adaptation. Also, the guy who played Batman went on to play Gordon on GOTHAM.
He’s a great actor!
Fun fact: I once auditioned to be a local Robocop for public appearances, mall openings, etc. I didn’t nail it. The guy who was FAR and away the best- had the walk, nailed every minute mechanical movement- was a short, stocky guy who would never have fit the suit. A male model who was okay got it.
OH SNAP I FORGOT THIS EXISTED
The telethon to save Detroit is pretty great.
AW SHIT HERE’S MY BOY ROBOCOP 2! PHIL TIPPETT! PHILLLL TIPPEEETTTTT!!!
Why Robocop 2 doesn’t fight the ED-209 is beyond me*. *Time and money, probably.
Spent the budget on the procession of grisly failures scene, maybe.
When you put it that way, they made the right call.
Lewis does nothing in this movie except remind you Lewis was in the last movie.
Remember that Robocop 2 is not just a unstoppable murderous cyborg, he’s an unstoppable murderous cyborg who LOVES gettin’ high.
Way overdue a rewatch. I remember so little. He flies? What I remember most is whereas 1 had scenes in the style of DKR, 2 had a writer in the style of DKR.
No, no flying until Robocop 3, which I am now watching and will continue to watch until I tap out. Robocop 2 has some good stuff floating in a bunch of nothing.
Oh no tubi you started autoplaying robocop 3 and the remote is over there nooooo
Sometimes I wonder if Tubi and Roku have a deal where there's a secret sensor that knows how far away you are from the remote to follow a movie with something questionable. Yeah, Robocop 3 is the sequel, BUT STILL.
CCH Pounder AND Stephen Root in the first five minutes? Okay Robocop 3, I’ll play your game.
Okay, I still think this movie isn’t good, but somehow the movie starting with a ragtatg group of grubby everyman anti-corporate freedom fighters feels both appropriate AND like a logical continuation of the themes of the first movie. They’re an inversion of Boddicker’s gang. Interesting.
I LOVED Robocop 2 as a kid. I was obsessed with the Cain Robocop design. The only thing that sucked about the movie was the score. Going from Basil's legendary soundtrack to one of the most awful outdated-style soundtracks you could possibly imagine was difficult to accept
Agreed on all points. Robocop 2 is an incredible design, beautifully animated by Phil Tippett. Leonard Rosenman also did the soundtrack to Star Trek IV, following Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. And, similarly… Not great.
