building models being that much less unattractive than crypto is incredible. while I agree with sentiment, given the response to stuff like comic books and MTG, surely many of the survey respondents simply did not know what building models is

Legos qualify as model building, and Legos are cool.
What if like … building models but also building giant-ass paludariums? (Spotted in a reptile store and why aren’t reptiles on the list huh.)
Pity the poor cosplay bros 😢
The source is apparently some manosphere guy: bsky.app/profile/mrfe... so likely.
Isn’t that the dude who nuked his online presence because he was secretly in a poly relationship?
Not sure, but I remember people talking about that. So could be him. I think it is one of the guys who Munecat did some videos about indirectly.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wVa... (sorry my firefox has a weird error atm where it gives black previews).
Who is now also on bsky: bsky.app/profile/mune...
@sarahjeong.bsky.social ...Models of buildings? Like the Lego architecture series? Or maybe they mean that old movie Weird Science? Kelly LeBrock was a model, right?
The poll needs to be more specific. Are we talking ships in bottles, or Nate Silver?
(or Warhammer)
i'm guessing WH falls under "wargaming" but one wonders if there's a split between warhammer-type gaming and historicals
Who are these stamp haters??
how many women have even encountered a man really into stamps in 2025 are they time traveling to the 1950s to go on dates
This!
We live. And we want you to know about the new postage rates that go into effect in the U.S. at midnight tonight 💕.
I think there are some hobbies that are fine in normal doses but are perceived as too often crossing the line into obsession.
I'm just happy that record collecting isn't on the chart.
Rubber or postage?
Stamp out stamp hatred. Buy stamps, lick stamps, send stamps.
I see that Legos is not on this list, but also if they have time & money for a Lego hobby, they have money to spend on you😆
I feel like if women knew what the average dude who reads was reading this number would be much, much higher.
I'm sorry how is *cosplay* up there w crypto. TF?
Half of the war gaming hobby is building models.
Some of these are also broad categorization in the same way "I am a history buff" is, like, there's some *very specific follow-up questions* that can swing things in dramatically different directions Like yeah man I get the history nerd but why do you know so much about *German tanks*, specifically
As the old joke goes "I'm building models these days" "oh really? What you building now?" "Cheryl Tiegs"
100% they were thinking of model cars and not gunpla, because normal people still don't know what gunpla is.
am I going to regret looking this up?
no it's models of scaled down giant robots that you assemble. exactly like model cars.
ah well that is much more benign than whatever I was imagining.
GUNdam PLAstic, fwiw
maybe they think guys who build gunpla know how to find "the little man in the 'bot"
Given the massive overlap between the two, hard to imagine a bunch of guys who are into models but not into anime.
So guns/shooting aren't on this because they aren't nerd coded? Surely that's a red flag hobby...
Seems like a safe bet that the 2% of women who think reading is unattractive are part of the 23% who think crypto isn't.
Fascinating. Also, I had no idea "crypto" was a "hobby."
it is if you don’t make money on it.
Gunpla builders are high value individuals, Sarah
with all due respect, sir,
He's just a cute little guy! *Immediately uses one of the most horrifying weapons in the entire Gundam franchise*
The G-Self is highly underrated imo
it’s so funky!!! I love it I’ve been doing a project where I build the HG model for every Gundam show I finish watching (been going in release order) and G-Reco is the latest lol. I wish the show had been given so much more time to cook
The movies do a lot to clean up G-Reco but there's no English release in sight and the JP Blu-rays are expensive.
yeah, I’ve been skipping the compilation movies for everything as I watch (I’m basically watching everything but SD and Build stuff), but the G-Reco movies are the only ones I’m interested in seeing one day bc I’m curious to see how they fix up the pacing!
I have a girlfriend!!!
and yet i've never met her in person. interesting,
so, "katie," what do you think about gundam
She just bought her first one the other day, lol
next thing you're gonna tell me your girlfriend lives in canada
irl lol
Magic tricks so unforgivably low
what time window includes both stamps and funko, and separates arcade games from video games???
Was gonna say, stamps surely are at least as unfamiliar to survey respondents as models?
With crypto being harmful for themselves and others, it is crazy that it is even considered. Everything else in this list is relatively harmless, even if some of the fans of them are obnoxious. Though looking at another commenter's exploration for the source of the survey explains so much.
Arcade vs. video games is funky. Is arcade pinball, pachinko, ski-ball, etc. these days?
odd ...none of the respondents thought gardening guys were unattractive. hey #gardening feed, did we know this? 🌱
It took me longer than I care to admit to realize that “building models” has nothing to do with AI.
Perhaps many respondents understood the hobby in question to mean, like, choosing good covariates or documenting clearly what all the variables do in one's script. No? Just me? That's embarrassing
Wut? ;-)
Also, no coin collectors? On the one hand, most of us probably have a relative in the hobby. On the other ... I'm glad I got into it before I found out that Marion Zimmer Bradley's husband*(double shudder) wrote one of the definitive texts on US circulation coins. *see "Breendoggle" NSFW trigger
The model stuff could span a bunch of different categories -- train sets, Warhammer, etc. This prof in Japan does WWII tanks and aircraft, and carved me little busts of Kirk and Spock. Currently working on Uhura! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._G._S...
Reading and building models less popular than video games, comic books, DND, and crypto. Magic, cosplay, and even Funko!? Anime!? What kind of world is this..
Had to look up what Funko was lol
(Humphrey Bogart voice): stamps
That was my initial thought as well, but I am also taking the W just in case it’s true.
my main hobby, aquariums, not being on this list is probably a good thing, right?
What's "MTG" in this context? I'd certainly hope that women would find an intense interest in Marjorie Taylor Green to be off-putting, but I feel like it means something else.
I assume its "magic the gathering" given the other topics included
Yeah, I should have figured that out--thanks!
magic: the gathering
Right! Thanks.
Just glad Legos wasn't on there. Or does that count as building models?
For a terrifying minute here I thought Marjorie Taylor-Greene had somehow become a hobby. JFC.
my follows on here overlap in such a way I get jump scared by MtG or MTG almost every day
it was a response survey on a blog
I guess I need to rebrand my hobby from “wargaming” to “building models”
Yeah, I think "building models" is a thing that was big from the end of WWII until like the 80s. It used to always be shown as a sort of "normal boy" activity in a lot of movies without comment or importance to the plot.
I find guys who read very very sexy.
I feel like most of the respondents are thinking like model airplanes or something
Poor magicians :/
Yeah, speaking as somebody who's never indulged that particular branch of nerddom (but has several others on the list), I feel like I can say this without appearing defensive: magic is cool, dammit.
I mean at least half of it involves being really good with your fingers
I hadn't even considered that angle!
I guess for what it's worth, one time I wandered into what I can only describe as a gigantic nerd store in the suburbs and the only other woman in the massive store was in the aisle with the gundam models comparing products very seriously alongside her boyfriend
When I was a kid, my parents would take me out to a huge miniatures show every year in western MA. The warehouse was divided into two huge spaces. One was dollhouses, the other was trains. Each would walk me around their half and then hand me off to the other parent lolol. Some things never change.
One of my favorite regular dates was going to the gaming store and picking out Warhammer 40k minatures to paint together.
Where is LARPing on that list? Off the scale, likely.
Like original star trek, gundam is for women
I think people are including eg model trains, model armies, scale models, stuff like that. like stamp collecting it benefits from a "oh like my grandpa loved" association benefit among normies
I really do not think that explains the sizeable gap from stamp collecting
stamps are stereotypically dull, while model trains enjoy consistently great pr. one of the sopranos got into model trains! it's a little artsy and implies they're loaded, it enjoys the "eccentric" higher-status coding bump. dats my take
I mean, this guy is a model train nerd.
Also, how is Dungeons and Dragons better than video games? Do they understand how committed people are to DnD?
Joe Manganiello plays DnD.
Wait till you find out what those reader nerds are reading, Ladies.
So happy that home brewing didn’t make the list lol
So, which camp do we put the people who paint minis but don't play the game into?
Like... Legos?
