what are some RPGs with co-op and decent build-crafting? (NOT crafting to be clear) I've got a strong craving that cannot be sated already played BG3, divinity, WoW, PoE, Torchlight, Borderlands recommend me games where I can build my character unique from my friend, while playing with them

I would be very surprised if the Shadowrun Returns games don't have some multiplayer mods, chummer.
May I humbly suggest Elden Ring with the Seamless Co-Op mod, I’ve done it with a friend and had a complete blast building characters that complement each other.
If you're into monster collectors, perhaps Cassette Beasts is something? My girlfriend and I basically had two separate builds going for half of our team each but it worked and was fun. Also I think it's on sale on steam right now.
Other have said it, but Grim Dawn is EXCELLENT for exactly this. The one asterisk at the end of that statement is that you need to have the SAME AMOUNT OF CONTENT AS YOUR FRIEND for co-op. If you only have base game, you can ONLY play with others that ONLY have base game. Same for any of the DLC.
I would second grim dawn, but also i think the fromsoft souls games (specifically ds3 and elden ring) offer a pretty solid coop experience. Elden Ring in particular on PC has the seemless coop mod which is quite good.
If you want something kinda silly and out of the box, try out Wynncraft. Yes, it's Minecraft, but really it's an MMO using Minecraft as its engine. There's skill trees, stats, gear, etc. It's impressive how far they take it imo.
Also no modding needed- they accomplish all of this with vanilla clients. You just connect to their server and boom, it does the rest.
Grim Dawn is way up there for me. Specially the setting.

I would recommend Stardew Valley. It has a good cozy vibe and great co-op.
While it does also have the usual survival/crafting, Enshrouded might fit the bill? It has a pretty robust skill tree for a survival game where you can get pretty varied builds out of it from everyone else you're playing with.
One could argue Raft is similar.
If you're interested in a tabletop game-like experience, the digital version of Gloomhaven is very robust and might fit the bill. Looking into this made me realize how few games I have in that niche of genres.
I'd recommend W40k Rogue Trader if you want something beefy in terms of RPG and building options, akin to BG3

rogue trader also doesnt have the 15 layers of jank from "oh god why am i playing pathfinder 1e" that the other owlcat rpgs do, but still has all of the really fun parts of their engine

Hm... have you considered Jagged Alliance 3? Less fantasy, more modern day co-op RPGing. Likely with quite reasonable character building, too.

Not Albion, I'm afraid. It's a bit too simplistic in terms of build ingredient progression (Tier x requires Tier x ingredients and skills to build), and to make matters worse the pvp ganking has gotten out of hand in the areas where most of the higher tiered stuff is mined
Ah, and I forget to mention. unless something directly threatens the game's mechanics (RMT, hacking), they seem not to care much about what goes on inworld. I've literally seen General chat fill with the worst kinds of isms you'd wrinkle your nose at.
If you and your friends have a good time in Albion, it is despite the carefree approach of its staff and the cruelty inherent in its mostly story-free, progression-anywhere design.
That might be the only good thing about it. You can be a great knight, but you can also be a great armorer, given enough time, progression is not forced down fixed paths beyond skill progressions.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister is another D&D5e-based game like Baldur's Gate, but with a different setting. Crosscode is a single-player rpg ABOUT being in a game like this, but your character is not customizable. Very gool game nonetheless. I think there are some older Star Wars games like this.
Divinity 2: Original Sin is really fun to play around in builds and is made by the same studio that made BG3

V-Rising, though it does have crafting and timers which can be a chore to get through. (You can set the rate at which you get materials, refine, and craft, however.) Last Epoch is really fun, each char has 3 subclasses that can have multiple builds based on every single skill, and even different -
- builds based on the SAME skill. Each Individual skill has skill trees you can go in various directions for. You've already played Div, which is my other fav game, or I'd suggest that. Guild Wars 2 is fun, but an mmo. You can play the base game free with some restrictions, or getting one -
- or more expansions removes the restrictions. Plus, people are very welcoming and friendly in that game. For the King and For the King 2 are both very good co op turn based games, with multiple classes that have their own abilities, and weapons that also add or change abilities. -
- Each weapon is tied to one of your stats, and your stats are x / 100 (95 is the hard cap). Your skills are rolls using said stat, some skills have modifiers of + or - accuracy, some have only one roll, some can have up to 6 or 7 for the more powerful. 1 has multiple campaigns, 2 has one campaign -
- but it's split into multiple chunks where you start fresh each chunk. They are, on average, shorter than the campaigns of 1, but they have some variety in mechanics that 1 didnt have. I recommend playing them in order - 1 is three player, 2 is four player.
I occasionally get laughed at for suggesting it, but Sword Art Online -Hollow Realization- has a pretty decent system for building all this. The only catch is that you and your friends have to play through the whole story mode of an area first before you can play it co-op.
I haven't gone back in years, because I just kinda got bored of SAO as a whole, but it was a good time at the time.
Divinity Original Sin 2 especially when you add steam workshop mods to the mix
Last Epoch is really good for that. Can play as the same class and do vastly different things.
Phantasy Star Online
Seeing recommendations for Warframe and I gotta give a counter that it'll take you hours of grind for the mods before you're really making builds your own, even then the game is effectively solved in that your loadout may be unique but your mods wont be. Good game otherwise if it's your vibe.
Guild Wars 2 is decent for build expression, it's 90% unlocked through levels instead of RNG and the last 10% is easily filled in via the auction house, I'd definitely recommend that for the criteria.
I'll also recommend Remnant: From the Ashes 1 and 2 (IIRC your run bugged?), Outriders and, if you fancy a revisit and don't mind the bug potential, Elden Ring with the seamless co-op mod (Dark Souls 1 also just got a seamless co-op mod a month back but ER has more builds).
It’s more action-y, so possibly not the vibe, but Warframe has a surprising amount of modularity under the surface once you figure it out- all the frames play different from each other, and they can be further customised to differentiate play styles. Bit of a time investment, though.
Two Worlds 2 is a surprisingly fun with one of my favorite spellcasting systems.
Anything Owlcat is great. The Shadowrun crpgs are also good. Shadowrun: Hong Kong is an all timer.
Not sure if the shadowrun ones have co-op now I think about it, I haven't replayed them for a minute
The Hammerwatch series is rather unique and certainly not for everyone, but I've had a lot of fun playing them with friends. The builds in the game (especially Heroes of Hammerwatch II) vary wildly and we naturally end up with very distinct characters.

Alas, Sega's kind of run it into the ground. Loved the game, and even made content for it, but once New Genesis came about, both sides have been on auto-pilot. Would recommend 100% to try, though. Both "Base" PSO2 and NGS combat feels great, in different ways.

I can second solasta. And yeah the writing is weaker but its also got that fun of janky writing. *also* everyone gets to always be in all the conversations (even if the "vote who talks" option is a little broken) It *is* 5e, so its literally just playing dnd but it is a 3d plane so flying *works*

This is gonna be a hot take but mechanically speaking i enjoy solasta more than baldurs gate. I simply wish there were more solasta to play (i know about custom adventures but its just not quite the same.) Excited for Solasta 2 eventually!
I think it is a far better multiplayer game to adventure with your friends in, whereas I want to see more of the character interactions and such of the NPC cast in Baldur's Gate.
Once youve gotten one or two runs in bg3, its a hilariously fun time running it with friends when you care less about the other npc party members. Have been playing with my wife in our free time for her first time through. But we also played solasta first so theres a lot of "i miss solasta" lmao

Not quite sure it counts, given that the builds are comparatively narrow and you have to unlock most of the classes through gameplay, but Remnant II has full co-op and works well when people are playing very different characters.
Warframe definitely fits the bill of "even if I use one thing that's the same to my friend, it can be made to play uniquely different", but the game is absolutely a time sink. New player experience is also not the greatest but that's something the devs know and are actively working on!
ESO has a companion system. Where you do a quest and unlock a follower who you build and equip. There is a learning curve for your build and theirs. But you and your bud could each have one and handle most dungeons. Not trials, tho. Multiple followers are unlockable if you have the dlcs. AND......

Last Epoch is an ARPG like Path of Exile, but I like it a lot more. Each skill has it's own skill tree, so even if you and your friend take the same class and skills you can be playing very different. I have a werebear who just rampages around which causes lightning to strike everything on screen.
I can also vouch for LE - one of the best games in the genre atm The best one imho is Grim Dawn and it's getting new dlc soon(tm)(speculated later this year)

I know it's not at all everyone's vibe, and even I can't say it's like a legendary game you have to play before you die, but I had a good few months of my life taken over by Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis for the action oriented combat alone
Warframe! It's a bit daunting to get into, and the first way too long is a bit rough (though they are improving early game), but there's a rich story, amazing characters, fun gameplay, and one of the few developers I can actually support. Very queer friendly.
Warframe *can* function like this but it's probably worth mentioning it's more like an MMO than a coop game, just in case that's a dealbreaker
I always hesitate to call it an mmo. It's never really massively multi-player. Missions are limited to 4 players, can all be run solo or with friends only. Even hubs are limited to like 50 people. I know people that treat it like a single player experience.
That's very fair, it's an unusual niche. It has an MMO kinda *feel* to it but you could avoid a lot of that with a dedicated party. That doesn't really avoid how the progression works though. I guess it's more a 'trying to sell premium currency meaning everything else has to progress slowly' thing.
That's where I will disagree. DE is remarkably good about premium currency. It's fully tradable, so it's easy to trade items for it. All gameplay items can be fully earned through play. Most cosmetics too. They aren't perfect, but if there is an example of ethical premium currency, it's Warframe
Oh no I agree, I just mean in non-live service games you more rarely grind the same level many times to get what you're looking for. It's fun! Just feels less... beginning to end storyline focused than a typical co-op RPG? But it's still fun! There's a reason I spent ages unlocking every weapon.

seconding warframe. Been here since the alpha and I will never let go. While I fall in and out of it it's always been there to be a fun PvE time (or PVP if you really like that).
It's also impressive from a build crafting standpoint. 60 different Warframes you swap between. Each is effectively a class. Hundreds of weapons. Thousands of mods for all that. Battle pets, space flight, crewed starships, a rogue like mode, and more. All heavily modifiable

First thoughts for me are Payday 2 or 3 and 40k darktide if your looking for first person that can be played in a mission based format
Outriders. It's a 6/10 game with some of the most hilarious build crafting I've seen in a while. One of my builds was Chad Sportsball, a tank that only tackled enemies and made them explode. If they got tackled, it reset my skills. The cycle never stops
Id put Last Epoch has some of my favorite build crafting as you not only have a passive tree to spend points in, but also each skill you can use has its own passive tree as well, some of which can be very transformative! Changing damage types or even how the ability works fundamentally, it’s great!

Grim Dawn, if you're in the mood for an action RPG. It's even getting a 3rd expansion this year. It has a fun build system where every character is a combo of two mastery skill trees, and you have room for build options even within two people picking the same masteries.
If you like ARPGs, then Grim Dawn ans Titan Quest can have WILDLY different characters in co-op, but have no roleplay focus at all... 😅

Grim Dawn has very deep buildcrafting. But it's also a handfull to get into. Remnant 1 or 2, Warframe and Deep Rock Galactic all have interesting build options but aren't really RPGs. Vermintide 2 and Darktide also have a lot of variety in terms of skills and gear. V Rising is fun too.
Maybe Aground or Grounded. Both of those do have crafting elements though and Grounded is definitely meant to be more of a Survival Crafting game. Aground is one of my favourite hidden gem games though so it'd be nice to know more people enjoyed it too.

Redfall is also maybe an option. It's not as bad as all the negativity around it would have you assume, but it definitely doesn't go above being just kinda decent. It might also be better with friends though but idk 'cause I'm not sure I could convince anyone to try it with me.
I mean technically there's a bunch of Minecraft Modpacks that can fit that. But usually when I try them for that purpose I have the same issue of not wanting to actually build stuff. But if you have a friend that wants to build stuff that could fix that issues.

Nothing beats most ttrpgs. Recently, I got into Rust Hulks, and it feels a bit like Firefly light. Anything from Whitewolf is good such as Vampires the masquerade if you want dark back and sus everything. Paranoia if you just want to meme as hard as you can and love friend computer.

It's an MMO, but Guild Wars 2 has a lot of build craft options, even in the base game without the expansion-unlocked Elite Specializations.
Was just thinking about suggesting Guild Wars 2. I cannot overstate enough how refreshing it is as an MMO given my experiences (the community is very positive and willing to help new players, it doesn't feel like a total grindfest until end-game crafting and whatnot, but that's pretty optional.)
On any map with major Map-Metas (reoccuring sidequests) whenever the big fight is about to go down, you will see tons of people slapping down group buffs like food platters and banners that give anyone who uses them long lasting benefits. So welcoming.
Not to mention the upcoming Tyria Pride march for pride month! The fact that I see so many faces at a community-organized event, and the fact that so many people show up every year that it's spread across two days and several instances?! I love you Gay Wars 2
I usually go and march in that to show support, but my computer is just too out of date these days.
With the most recent update, I think VRisng could be included as a build-crafting game! You play as a vampire with access to 6 different magic schools and (currently) 13 weapons + a bunch of other stat alternative options, to take on a boss climb while also building a really cool castle 😁
Adding to the Diablo-likes with Last Epoch. That one's a lot of fun. Also if you're ok with free WoW servers, there's Ascension WoW. Literally make-whatever-the-fuck-you-want in that one.

Check out Wildermyth! Your builds are impacted by your class choices but also story decisions you make. Your friend might be an archer with a forest spirit as a companion, and you might not be able to wield weapons at all because one arm is a stone sword and the other is always on fire.

Add more options. It's a 12 year old game, but still thriving with regular updates. They just introduced homesteads in the last expansion where you can build and customize a house, and have a little area to interact with your mounts. Also, killer mount system.
Oh! almost forgot, certain classes get real creative with weapon use. Like there is a profession that uses the greatsword as a ranged weapon. The staff, which is usually a ranged magic weapon, in the hands of one class is a martial weapon designed to make them bounce around.
Because I felt like adding more: SUPER welcoming community, the certain experienced players can get themselves a little "apple" icon on the minimap to show they are willing to show newbies how to do the big meta events and such. Also, respects your wallet. no Pay-to-Win crap.
and while there are occasional balance patches nerfing or buffing stats on armor (usually they target profession skills) Level 80 is the level cap for the game, and armor doesn't go beyond that. They have only ever added one additional tier of armor/weapons: LEGENDARY, which has the same stats...
as the previous highest level, but have cool animations when unsheathing, and tons of quality of life benefits, so you could restat from a DPS roaming build, but then go to raid and switch to tank or healing stats. also, there is a reason the end game on this game is called: FASHION WARS 2!
OH! I forgot the 5 different races! bog-standard humans, the Towering Norn, the diminuitive yoda-looking Asura, the plant folk Sylvari, and the horned feline Charr. each race will change the first thirty levels or so of play based on things you choose during character creation.

Nioh series/Strangers of Paradise would be my recommendation. Did a full co-op playthrough with a couple friends of mine and we each put together hugely different builds I add Strangers of Paradise since it builds off of those systems, though you need to get to the DLC to properly buildcraft
How about Terraria? Not much of a story there but the co-op is some of the most fun I've ever had in a game.
Seen a few people recommend Guild Wars 2, and I can absolutely agree it's great for what you're looking for, but if you're looking for even better build-crafting, the first Guild Wars is incredible. It's 20 years old now but the build variety is unparalleled - hundreds of abilities to mix and match.

Not sure whether it fits what you're going for but all the souls games/elden ring are a blast to play co-op
V Rising is a fun one that's being slept on. Had a recent expansion/update too. Gathering resources for gear and base building can get a bit grindy, but that can be fixed with server settings.
Simpler than other options, but I would recommend Secrets of Grindea. An homage to Secrets of Mana and older Zelda titles. It's a good mixture of humour and fun gameplay. Co-op up to 4 players.
Last Epoch is pretty fun, and so is Grim Dawn. Last Epoch is great if you love Chrono Trigger too! I love their story and world building! ^^
Guild Wars 2 will always be amazing for that
As a PoE player, I highly recommend Grim Dawn. Lots of opportunities for fun and unique builds, and it has less "walls" than PoE. I find it to be a perfect middle ground between a simple ARPG with no build diversity like D3 and an over complicated one like PoE. Very easy to jump in and play.
Honestly either of the Planescape games are amazing. Torment: Tides of Numenera is the newer of the two so a bit more polished then its predecessor and uses a very diverse character creation system that ties deeply into the world lore.

Wyldermyth is a video game inspired by ttrpgs, and it has multiplayer. You go on randomly generated adventures, controlling a group of heroes. Heroes from previous adventures can appear in future ones. It's very good.
Here is my mandatory mention of Spiral Knights, old MMO currently on life support. It was, and kind of still is, my favorite mmo. Very high build variance. Needs a community built launcher to work on anything newer than win8.

I'd like to suggest Last Epoch as an ARPG.
If you're looking for another Diablo-like, Grim Dawn might be up your alley. Lots of build customization where you can combine any two jobs from a set of like 5-10
Dragon quest 9, but you would have to go through some hoops to get it going.
