dissociating to a lot of bleak shit lately, which has (surprisingly!) not been good for morale. but for some reason Scott Frank's & Chandni Lakhani's Dept. Q is hitting just the right notes - grimly comforting, comfortingly grim. highly recommended, currently on Netflix. medically need a 2nd season.

wide shot of Dept. Q semi-transparent mirror, fuzzy green light visible through it from the other side, with spider on it on our side on left of frame. Kate Dickie's reflection can be seen on the right side of the frame, anxiously eyeballing said spider ominous interior - a tubular space that looks like the inside of a Soviet spaceship. dingy with graffiti all over the walls, and an orange-red hellish circular light at the top. in the foreground there's an archway and darkness on either side of it wide shot of Goode & Manvelov, framed by greenhouse doors and backgrounded by a big pale blue sky. in the foreground there is a blurry figure on the left and shelves of little plants on the right.

The first episode was a little rough. i.e. - supporting characters talk about the worst person in the world: no one likes him, no one wants to talk to him, or even be in the same room with him, and it's just Matthew Goode with sad eyes. Once it gets going, and we get more Akram it starts to cook.

It's on the list after I finish Treason (the series not the crime). Hoped it would be good and to see if I recognise any of the locations.

I was intrigued by Matthew Goode being in it - he's always worth a watch - but had there been a big "From the writer of Out of Sight" neon light I'd have been on it like jam on a baby's face. Just need to finish Ironheart and then I'm jumping in

Lockwood and Co was massive (by Netflix standards) in the UK and didn’t make it. 😩 Fingers crossed because this is great and nice to see Goode in something that isn’t another period piece. Looking forward to you writing about it.

Netflix’s second attempt at a Slow Horses, but much better than Black Doves. Matthew Goode finally with something to get his teeth into.

I've been watching it as well. I love a British detective story. Not too dark, not too frivolous. I could only watch a couple of episodes of Luther because it was so gory.

a little bit in love with Alexej Manvelov's mysterious character Akram, who's got kind of an Omar Sharif thing happening

screenshot of Akram in Dept Q's pilot episode - handsome brunette, dark-eyed man with mustache, hands clasped in front of him, wearing a pale blue button-up shirt with tie and vest. against a fuzzed-out green backdrop

yes, agreed! I don't want to make Dept. Q sound too depressing because it does have a sense of humor and can be very funny. there's also a lovely, reluctant, slow-motion 'getting the team together' kind of thing happening throughout the season.
