correct the energy you need for James Bond is “hypermasculine dickbag” and that is just not on display in this list

That’s Sean Connery energy. But Daniel Craig is more complex. And IMO more interesting.
Holland would be a good, even great "agent that Bond meets up with and dies in front of Bond via monologuing villain".
Holland could be an awesome secret agent! But he's of the unassuming variety, and absolutely not the Bond variety.
Theo James, Henry Golding and John Boyega would be more in the ballpark.
All terrible choices. Ugh
I would watch a Fassbender Bond
I don’t even know that he’s interested but I would love to see Dev Patel as Bond.
after seeing Monkey Man? this is who i'd pick
I don’t know. Roger Moore didn’t have this vibe and he did some good work as Bond. And yes I have seen A View to a Kill. Ditto Timothy Dalton, victim of terrible screenplays
You don't want a handsome boy, you want a rugged old creep who's seen some shit.
Alan Ritchson.
Alternatively, let's go in a different direction & cast Matt Berry.
And they're not Canadian
they'll never do a woman Bond but what about the least toxically masculine Bond you could ever imagine
So I guess we should do Statham Bond?
I guess Michael Cera was busy
he'd be great in a reboot of the peter sellers casino royale
I'm curious how many people with strong thoughts on Bond have read any of the books. Because OH MY GOD are they racist, misogynist, and homophobic even for the era.
Bond actually has real emotions in the novels, though -- unlike anyone but Craig in the films.
I remember a book where the villain was based in Scotland and Bond had to go out of his way to assure the crowd at some local Highland games thing that even though he's not full blooded Scottish, his mom's side wasn't *that* unacceptable.
i think Elrodi could pull it off
Best option of the three for sure. Agreed Holland has the wrong energy and I don't understand the appeal of Harris, who's fine but I always feel I'm supposed to getting a lot more charisma from him than I do.
Not tall enough
I hope you’re right if they pick him!
These guys could at best play Moneypenny's grand-kids
the role he plays in saltburn is a much nicer guy, but the casual rich guy who everyone loves and is always socially comfortable shares a lot of qualities with bond imo. that sort of unreal confidence.
You could condense him down into a post-Craig Roger Moore (still gritty, but more aristocratic) the way Eon condensed Craig down into a modern Connery (menacing brawler but still obviously coming from somewhere other than the streets)
Feel like they would make better as bond boys.(The boy version of a bond girl)
Hannah Waddington.
When Holland is using his real voice I think he can oblige
I'd kinda be interested in Elordi because he's playing the Monster in del Toro's Frankenstein movie
I'm trying to think of who has the most "charming, sophisticated person who you can still tell has killed a ton of people" energy these days. A younger Clive Owen could have pulled it off, I think.
He would have been fantastic, I've been a little bummed about that for years.
It’s too bad Glen Powell isn’t British I think he would be good in the role
Idris Elba was actually a great pick for it tbh
I'm forever going to be bitter that the studio dicked around for so long that he aged out of the role
He has not.

I came here to say this lol. Perfect energy, doesn't even have to fake the accent.
RIP Bond (Craig's Version)
Only if you're playing James Bond "straight." I have an idea for an "Old James Bond" action-comedy film starring Jim Broadbent, a kind of a secret agent take on Cohen The Barbarian that I think could work wonderfully.
The right answer is Charlize Theron and we all know it.
Jason Momoa as Bond
I was on Team Elba for Bond for years and years and I’m deeply annoyed it didn’t happen, total waste of a golden opportunity
Dev Patel is the obvious choice these days.
YES THANK YOU
I kinda like Elba but by the time I heard much about it I kinda felt he was just slightly out of optimum age range (others were clamoring still, mind you). I wouldn't have -minded-, but I kinda wanted a younger bond (but I am not a fan of any of these current candidates, no 'presence').
They could do it with Elba, but it would have to be part of the plot, not Elba doing a role written for a much younger actor. Make it an interesting sort of Dark Knight Returns take on Bond with an older actor kind of thing
There's a practical reason not to cast too old as well--Daniel Craig pointed out that as he aged into his 50s the stunt work was too physically demanding
Tom Cruise could do the funniest thing
He's too good for that shit. I want another season of In The Long Run, anyway.
Given that Hollywood keeps on casting guys in their mid 40s to mid 50s as action stars, he still might have a chance
I mean he’s definitely got a chance at more action franchises but I think it’s clear they’ve moved past him as a Bond choice especially with this list
If this is even real. It’s so wrong I’m not even taking it seriously
I blame Barbara
David Gyasi is like an Elba contemporary with somehow even more suave.
This is the follow-up post where I learn David Gyasi is 45. Still my top pick for Bond by a lot.
I guess the problem is that Bond is such a boring character to be locked into for years. I’m sure the $$$ is great but it’s such a shame to see talents like Daniel Craig committed to that for years and years
He would have been amazing.
Maybe someone misheard Tom Hardy
After a lot of back-and-forth I’ve come down firmly on the side that Bond is one of the few characters where the WASP identity is actually integral to the character Elba would (still) be amazing in a Bond-like role, but as actual Bond it would be impossible to rise above a commentary
agreed, he has both the energy and the physicality for it, I would 100% be on board with Patel as Bond
I’m the 12,000th person to suggest him, but we are all correct.
I don't know if Patel has the gravitas? How about John Boyega, using that 'commanding' sense he had in Attack The Block (I'm serious, he actually felt like a 'leader' for a lot of that movie, as silly as it was). SW movies got him some name recognition/known quantity, and he has the build.
Watch Lion and Monkey Man. He has range. Boyega would also be a good choice for the same reasons
I admit, I've not seen either of these, and I realized that my viewpoint on him might just be out of date (mental image, etc). I don't doubt that he's a solid actor, mind you, just was thinking of the 'command a room' thing. Will have to check those out, though.
Yeah, his early work was really standout, but he’s matured significantly as an actor and definitely has that presence. Also: www.theguardian.com/film/2022/au...
...yeah. Yeah. Dude has the exact combination of "looks like an adult when wearing a tuxedo" and "plausibly knocked a dude's teeth out with a rusty tire iron to win a punch-up in the parking lot"
I think Aaron Pierre from Rebel Ridge could step in as well
I still want it to be an American
They should have at least done a Felix Leiter spin-off movie with Jeffrey Wright.
John Boyega or Dev Patel are my dream castings.
It’ll never happen. White people would lose their minds
That’s why hope they give it to Naomi Harris 😈
Eh, the WASP-y imperialist underpinnings are integral to the Bond character. I’m sure either would deliver performances that would be amazing commentaries and reactions to the James Bond character, but I couldn’t see them *being* James Bond, at least in a way that kept anything but the surface level
You're telling me that you think this loyal son of the empire who flits around the third world indiscriminately killing locals isn't white?
Patel is a great choice. I also like Aaron Taylor-Johnson
The only one, absolutely made for it
Team Dev, 100%
Maybe the biggest case of dropping the ball in cinematic history.
Imagine if we'd gotten a James Bond who was also Knuckles the Echidna!! We were robbed
He would've been superb, really sad it never happened
They're too soft and fresh-faced to embody the ruthless, assassin side of Bond without it feeling forced. Theo James, I think, would be a decent choice.
This is probably just reflecting my own age but, in addition to not being roguish enough, they all seem too young? Like I don’t think a barely 30 Bond works?
Brosnan shifted the Bond Overton Window
James Bond needs to be played by someone who seems like their natural state is drunken asshole sex offender.
I think it's telling that Gen Z/late millennials just don't give off that energy, for both good and bad
