But why did the union wait until the day before the shows, when the shows are obviously not going to be cancelled, and it is too late to change a damn thing?

because AEW is doing a longterm booking vs NXT doing a one time thing, the union doesn't actually give a shit about the AEW vs WWE rivalry it's literally just a scale issue
