I’d say that amendments to the constitution would resolve this, except the current president is explicitly ignoring a specific one, and the SCOTUS refused to stop him.
The language of the constitution, and in fact all US law, always provides for some kind of loophole. And that is by design because states wouldn't have formed a union otherwise. Union over justice. With a tight constitution, Trump would never have been admitted to the ballot in the first place.

The US constitution does not explicitly speak about criminal conviction for eligibility. A president can be in jail and be elected! Impeachment does not by default disqualify for eligibility either. Even conviction by Senate does it unless specifically enacted by same.
It is a constitution for Gentlemen only. It already got shaky when women and blacks came into the picture, and blacks can still be slaves when convicted (easy to implement). Fuck that!

Democracies with strong presidential powers are inherently less stable than strictly parliamentary ones. Need to get rid of the office of the President as is, need a new constitution.
The founding fathers sought to eliminate that problem by establishing “three co-equal branches of gov’t” checking & balancing each other. It was ingenious but not fool proof. It worked beautifully for 248 years. Trump & his billionaire backers (Heritage Foundation) figured out how to break it.
In fact, founding "fathers" is already the problem.
At best, it is a prescription for sabotage and calcification. When the contradictions pile up, something like today happens. The constitution could have been broken the other way with different leaders, like hard-core socialism. But broken it would have been. Maybe it still will.

I have come around to the idea of a parliament. We should have made that move some time ago. Assuming we avoid nuclear winter, I hope to live long enough to see what form of govt rises from the ashes of the US.

It is truly terrifying. I believe that what we have been seeing so far is essentially a training exercise for a full-scale Chinese-style oppression of US citizen dissenters. I don’t see how this ends without massive violence.
