Just watched Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. What a mess of a film.

I made the mistake of watching the Thursday Murder Club, despite the all evidence pointing to it being a pile of poo. I know these things are subjective, but sometimes you can let others take the hit for you and save yourself the bother.
I kinda got bored. They didn't seem too bothered with story or character. Just a bunch of set pieces glued together (more so than normal).
Haven’t seen it yet but that was what I felt about Dead Reckoning. You *can* make a great MI with essentially no plot at all, the one with Philip Seymour Hoffman where the plot is ‘we are all trying to get possession of this one thing that we will never explain or describe’
and you can then just do one great action or interrogation scene after another with very clean and simple motivations. But then with DR they jam in this stupid plot about AI which actually gums up the flow of the movie from cool scene to cool scene with explanations you don’t believe or care about
That's the exact process. They start filming the set pieces before they have a script. Then film exposition scenes in small rooms on sound stages, so it's easy to reshoot stuff later. It's insane to think when there's a big car chase, the actors don't know why they are doing it.
That is insane. How do you know this?
I've seen the cast talk about the process in various interviews. This video explains things quite well.
That was interesting. Thanks. It can't ways have been that way. At least the first one is coherent. They must have changed to that at some point.
I might have to look into when the change happened
