5th generation Texan here. The Texas that I grew up knowing and loving is long gone. After 30 years of GOP rule, it’s never coming back. Got a place in upstate NY across from Vermont and everything is better. I do miss the food, but that’s about it. Get out of Texas as quick as you can, y’all.

I lived in Austin in the 80’s. I was a single mom and lived right by Barton Springs in a studio apt. I drove a Dodge Dart with no air-con and worked for Capital City Insurance Co. It was the most difficult but liberating time in my life. A beautiful city with a colorful music scene.
My wife’s family lives there, and she grew up there. She now wants nothing to do with it, and after extensive stays, I’m not arguing that. Mosquitoes bit me through my clothes, I was sweaty every second, and people looked at me like I had 3 heads everywhere we went. Not my fave! Lol

I was born there and grew up in the panhandle. Moved away in the mid-nineties but still have family there. Love the incredible sunsets, Tex-Mex, Bar-B-Que and yes most of the people are truly nice. But Abbot, Cruz and company are set on enabling the Trump regime and now it has been tarnished for me.
I mean I grew up in Texas, left for college and never went back. And when I do visit, it’s just so much worse than almost every other place I’ve ever lived, including Arkansas, Utah, Washington, and now Oregon. They just changed it back. I just couldn't stomach living somewhere that the majority of people either are openly racist/ bigoted- or are ok with just sitting back and doing nothing because it isn't directly affecting them. Texas could be Blue - but there is too much apathy

Same goes for my home, Utah. We’re more like 60% republitools, and there’s tons I hate but tons I love about living here, so at least 45% of us deserve better representation. FFS, who am I kidding, ANY representation.

Our family moved outside of Dallas in 1969, and I've had immediate family living there for all but five of the past 56 years. I witnessed up close as the Western flavor of conservatism/independence was consumed by Southern Christian Nationalism. It's tragic knowing what that state could be.
Taxes, just like California, gets a lot of press. Good, bad and indifferent. Both states are always in the news. I was born in Texas. I live in San Francisco now. I appreciate both for what they have to offer. I also recognize that both states are large and hugely populated and we have our problems.

Texas is a microcosm, an analogy, a whatever.... I love America. I particularly love where I live, which happens to be a bright red rural county in California - although I am a staunch liberal. My county is home to a major national park, but visitation is WAY down. America is the Texas of the world

Molly Ivins was a firebrand Journalist and a real Texan. There was a documentary out a few years ago that told her story.
Native Texan and Houstonian here. I returned from a year in Asia for a family matter and didn’t plan on staying but life got in the way. Oh. And COVID. I don’t disagree that there are great things about the state, but the bad outweighs the good right now and I’m organizing and working with others
to change that. I’d rather have spent my retirement elsewhere and not having to badger/troll the Texas legislature and horde of miscreants, but these are the dystopian cards we’ve been dealt. However, until Texans do pull their heads out of their asses and recognize their part in maintaining the

I grew up in California. I love California, but it is not the same now. There are some good things, some that aren't so good. But it is way, way better than Texas FOR ME and in my opinion. (I am not a direct CA transplant, I've lived all over the world....)
My guess is that California would love you -- Charlotte -- back more than Texas would or could, no matter how much you might pine for the past. Sadly. No matter how much we do or don't love or like Texas, it needs fighters right now because it is in bad shape.
I grew up in Oklahoma, and have family that live in TX. Visit quite frequently. You can't beat the Mexican food there.
